Dans une étude basée sur des documents de première main, l'auteur nous fait revivre les événements dramatiques de cette époque et les déceptions qui ont suivi. Né à New York, Frédéric Seager a obtenu son Ph. D. en histoire à l'université Columbia. Il est professeur honoraire à l'Université de Montréal, où il a enseigné l'histoire de l'Europe aux XIXe et XXe siècles. Ses travaux ont paru dans plusieurs journaux savants, dont la Revue d'Histoire moderne et contemporaine. Il est citoyen canadien et vit au Québec.
