Book excerpt: Ernest Hemingway, best-known to layman and aficionado alike, in his fiction described bullfighting, or "toreo, "as a cross between romantic risk and a drunken party, or as an elaborate substitute for war, ending in wounds or death. Although his descriptions of the "beauty"in "toreo "are lyrical, they are short on imaginative creation of how such beauty, through techniques and discipline, comes about. Hemingway may have sculpted a personal mystique of "toreo "but, in the opinion of some, he ignored or slighted the full, unique nature of the subject. In "Bullfighting: Art, Technique, and Spanish Society "John McCormick sorts through the complexities of "toreo, "to suggest the aesthetic, social, and moral dimensions of an art that is geographically limited, but universal when seen in round. While having felt the attraction of Hemingway's approach, McCormick knew that he was being seduced by elements that had little to do with "toreo. "To try to right Hemingway's distortions, he named the first edition of this book "The Complete Aficionado, "but then realized that the volume was directed at more than just the spectator: "BullFighting "is written from the point of view of the "torerro, "as opposed to the usual spectator's impressions and enthusiasm. With the help of a retired "matador de toros, "Mario Sevilla Mascarenas, who taught McCormick the rudiments of "toreo "as well as the emotions and discipline essential to survival, the authors rescue "'toreo "from romantic cliches. They probe the anatomy of the matador's training and technique, provide a past-and-present survey of the traditions of the "corrida, "and furnish dramatic portraits of such famous figures as Manolete, Joselito, Belmonte, and Ordonez. Here then is an informed analysis and critique of the origins and myths of "toreo "and a survey of the novels it has inspired. Defending the faith in a lively as well as clear and discerning manner, this volume provides a committed and vivid approach to the rich history, ritual, and symbolism of the bullfight as it currently exists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Body, Movement, and Culture, Sally Ann Ness provides an original interpretive account of three forms of sinulog dancing practiced in Cebu City in the Philippines: a healing ritual, a dance drama, and a "cultural" exhibition dance. Ness's examination of these dance forms yields rich insights into the cultural predicament of this Philippine city and the way in which kinesthetic and visual symbols interact to create meaning. Ness scrutinizes the patterns of movement, the use of the body and of objects, and the shaping of space common to all three versions of the sinulog. She then relates these elements to the fundamental ways the culture bearers of Cebu City experience their world. For example, she shows how each of the dance forms functions to reinforce class distinctions and to establish a code of authenticated "cultural" action. At the same time, Ness demonstrates, the dances manifest and actualize widely applied notions about the nature of "devotion," "sincerity," "naturalness," and "beauty." Throughout the text, Ness provides a close analysis of movement that is all too often missing from anthropological studies of dance. Most significantly, she works to relate the movements used in dance to everyday movement and to interpret the attitudes and values that are embodied in both choreographed and quotidian movement. Important and illuminating, Body, Movement, and Culture is of particular interest to students and scholars of anthropology, folklore, dance, and Asian studies.

Book excerpt: In the California winter of 1965, Jay DeFeo was evicted from the San Francisco apartment that had become a temple for her 2000-pound colossus of a painting, The Rose. The morning after it was safely carried out the front window, DeFeo was forced to destroy the only other artwork she'd started in six years, an enormous painting on paper stapled directly to her hallway wall. The unfinished Estocada-a kind of shadow Rose-was ripped down in unruly chunks, carried to her new home, and reanimated years later through photography, photocopy, collage, and relief. Drawing from largely unpublished archival material, Rip Tales traces Estocada's life and multiple afterlives, offering insight into DeFeo's evolution as an artist and her instinct for self-cataloguing. It's a study of process and processing, and of the contradictions that galvanized the artist's practice: fragment versus whole, subject versus object, and margin versus center.Rip Tales further includes the stories and voices of Bay Area artists whose practices similarly evoke themes of transformation and contingency, including April Dawn Alison, Ruth Asawa, Lutz Bacher, Dewey Crumpler, Vincent Fecteau.. Through essay, interview, eulogy, and recipe, author Jordan Stein interrogates and celebrates a Bay Area ethos that could be defined by its discomfort with definitions. Trading on the literal and metaphorical gravity of DeFeo's last-minute rip, this idiosyncratic book foregrounds the unpredictable edges of artworks, archives, and ideas.

Book excerpt: 'Historical fiction of a high order' The Times To avoid war across Europe, a killing strike is needed. 1937. Flying for the infamous Condor Legion over the battlefields of Spain's civil war, Merz has been able to unleash the fearsome potential of the Luftwaffe's newest weapon against his opponents. In Dieter's hands, the Messerschmitt Bf-109 is as graceful as a matador's killing strike: la estocada. Scotsman and ex-marine Tam Moncrieff is recruited by a nameless intelligence agency in London to go to Germany and sound out Hitler's resolve. Does he really intend to invade Czechoslovakia? Do his generals support him? Can the march to war be stopped? As duty collides with conscience, fate will bring both men together. In a world wedded to violence and ambition, desperate steps must be taken. To avoid war a killing strike is needed. The question is, who is the matador, who is the bull? A gripping historical thriller based on real events, Estocada is part of the SPOILS OF WAR Collection, a thrilling, beguiling blend of fact and fiction born of some of the most tragic, suspenseful, and action-packed events of World War II. From the mind of critically acclaimed thriller author GRAHAM HURLEY, the blockbuster non-chronological collection allows the reader to explore Hurley's masterful storytelling in any order, with compelling recurring characters whose fragmented lives mirror the war that shattered the globe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a broad definition of the Durkheimian tradition, this book offers the first systematic attempt to explore the Durkheimians’ engagement with art. It focuses on both Durkheim and his contemporaries as well as later thinkers influenced by his work. The first five chapters consider Durkheim’s own exploration of art; the remaining six look at other Durkheimian thinkers, including Marcel Mauss, Henri Hubert, Maurice Halbwachs, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Michel Leiris, and Georges Bataille. The contributors—scholars from a range of theoretical orientations and disciplinary perspectives—are known for having already produced significant contributions to the study of Durkheim. This book will interest not only scholars of Durkheim and his tradition but also those concerned with aesthetic theory and the sociology and history of art.
