This book was released on 1977 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My investigation was based on three main objectives, namely: (1) to estimate the amount and type of geneticvariability in an interpopulation of maize (BS10 x BS11); (2) to utilize the estimate obtained for computing the expected genetic change in the two populations due to interpopulation selection; and (3) to compare the predicted response with the observed grain. I used two mating designs, the sested (Design I) and crossed classification (Design II) mating designs, and a combination of the two designs (Design I,II). The reference population used for defining the genetic parameters was the interpopulation formed by crossing random individuals in pairs from two parent populations. A genetic model of only additive and dominance effects was used. Genetic variability in the interpopulation was partitioned into additive and dominance components with their interactions with environment. Since the gene frequency of the parent populations were not know, the procedures used in estimating genetic parameters in the interpopulations were patterned along that used for intrapopulations. Covariances among half-sibs and full-sibs were, however, interpreted in terms of interpopulations genetic bvariances. Data were collected on nine traits, including, number of days to silk, ear height, tiller number, tiller height, ear length, ear diameter, cob diameter, kernel depth, and yield. For the interpopulation, the result showed that additive genetic variance(...).

This book was released on 1978 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of data from two sets of 100 S2 families derived from BSBBo2/o2(S2)CO provided estimates of genotypic variance, heritability, genotypic and phenotypic correlations, and expected genetic gain from selection for percent protein on a whole kernel basis, percent lysine, percent lysine-in-protein, grain yield, test weight, weight of 300 kernels, water displacement, kernel density, kernel hardness, dry volume of 300 kernels, ear rot score, percent moisture, and silking date. A 10 x 10 lattice design with two replications was used to evaluated the homozygous opaque-2 maize populations at two locations in 1973. The experiments at the Animal Science Farm were lost due to poor performance. F-tests in the analysis of variance and estimates of genetic variance indicated significant variability in the population studied. Broad sense heritability estimates, on an entry mean and on a plot mean basis, indicated that all traits were highly heritable except kernels density. Heritability estimates were also computed by the parent-offspring regression method for the protein traits. These estimates were lower than the estimates from components of variance and were probably due in part to year effects and variation among laboratory assays and batches. Also, the parent-offspring method estimated narrow sense heritabilities whereas broad sense heritability estimates were obtainced from the components of variance. Estimates of expected gains from selection were small to moderate in magnitude. (...).
