When high quality materials are used, distresses are typically due to traffic loading, resulting in rutting or fatigue cracking. The presence of water (or moisture) often results in premature failure of asphalt pavements in the form of isolated distress caused by debonding of the asphalt film from the aggregate surface or early rutting/fatigue cracking due to reduced mix strength. Moisture sensitivity has long been recognized as an important mix design consideration. The tensile strength is primarily a function of the binder properties. The amount of asphalt binder in a mixture and its stiffness influence the tensile strength. Tensile strength also depends on the absorption capacity of the aggregates used. At given asphalt content, the film thickness of asphalt on the surface of aggregates and particle-to-particle contact influences the adhesion or tensile strength of a mixture. Various studies have repeatedly proved that the tensile strength increases with decreasing air voids. The tensile strength of a mixture is also strongly influenced by the consistency of the asphalt cement, which can influence rutting. Thus, tensile strength plays an important role as a design and evaluation tool for Superpave mixtures Moisture damage of asphalt pavements is a serious problem. The presence of moisture tends to reduce the stiffness of the asphalt mix as well as create the opportunity for stripping of the asphalt from the aggregate. This, in combination with repeated wheel loadings, can accelerate pavement deterioration. Strength loss is now evaluated by comparing indirect tensile strengths of an unconditioned control group to those of the conditioned samples. If the average retained strength of the conditioned group is less than eighty-five percent of the control group strength, the mix is determined to be moisture susceptible. This research study shows that reliance on the Tensile Strength Ratio (TSR) values onl.

Book excerpt: A laboratory investigation was carried out to study the effects of various compaction technologies on moisture susceptibility, rutting resistance, and fatigue characteristics of various asphalt mixtures. The methodologies used in this study included three technologies such as common hot mix asphalt (HMA), warm mix (WMA), and half-warm mix asphalt (HWMA) technologies. In addition, in terms of WMA and HWMA mixtures, a foaming technology was used to produce the samples. The experimental design for WMA and HWMA included one aggregate moisture contents (~0.5 % by weight of the dry mass of the aggregate), three lime contents (0 %, 1 % and 2 % lime by weight of dry aggregate), and 2 % foaming water content. For HMA, 1 % lime content and completely dried aggregate were used. Three aggregate sources (designated as A, B, and C) and one PG 64-22 binder were used in this study. A total of 9 Superpave mix designs and 21 mixtures were completed. A total of 84 indirect tensile strength (ITS) samples, 126 asphalt pavement analyzer (APA) samples, and 30 fatigue beams were tested in this research. The major properties such as gyration number, ITS, tensile strength ratio (TSR), rut depth, deformation, toughness, as well as fatigue life were measured and computed for all mixtures. The test results indicated that various compaction technologies would slightly affect the Superpave mix design and obviously have an influence on gyration number, ITS values, rut depth, flow, toughness, and fatigue life of various mixtures regardless of aggregate source and lime content. In addition, the aggregate source significantly affected the ITS and rutting resistance in this study.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT (cont.): Analysis of test results in this study indicate that excessive asphalt binder may have been used in order to meet the voids in mineral aggregates (VMA) criteria for the poor performing mixtures. This finding may be consistent with other related findings that suggest that for some coarse graded aggregate structures, addition of so much asphalt binder may be necessary to meet the current Superpave VMA specification. The VMA requirement should, therefore, be reviewed. It is also found in this study that for mixtures with excessive asphalt binder the aggregate structure may not significantly affect the rutting resistance of the mixture. This may be the case because the asphalt binder tends to have a predominant influence, especially at higher temperatures, reduces the aggregate particle interaction in the mixture and, therefore, leads to poor rutting performance. The study finds that there may be apparent relationships between rutting resistance of mixtures and the following laboratory measured parameters: (1) the rate of change of gyratory shear per cycle measured from the slope of the gyratory shear versus number of cycles (semi-logarithm scale) in the Servopac Gyratory Compactor, (2) the rut depth measured in the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer and (3) the gyratory stability index measured from the Gyratory Testing Machine.

Book excerpt: The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is currently using the asphalt pavement analyzer (APA) as a testing tool to screen the rutting potential of asphalt mixtures as part of its balanced mix design (BMD) method. However, the cost and availability of APA equipment in VDOT and contractor laboratories and the speed of testing are main barriers to the routine use of APA in the BMD process, especially during the production of asphalt mixtures. The existence of alternative tests that are simple, practical, and performance indicative can help facilitate the implementation of BMD into practice. The monotonic loading tests (hereinafter “monotonic tests”) have been proposed to address the need for simpler tests. This study was undertaken to assess the feasibility of using monotonic tests as a screening tool to evaluate the rutting potential of dense-graded asphalt surface mixtures as part of the BMD initiative in Virginia. In this effort, three monotonic tests, the indirect tensile at high temperature (IDT-HT) test, rapid rutting (RR) test, and Marshall stability and flow (MS) test, identified from the literature, were evaluated using 17 plant-produced asphalt mixtures with “A” and “D” designations. The results were used to assess the monotonic tests and the APA test relative to each other through several performance metrics and correlations with fundamental rutting tests and mechanistic-empirical–based simulations. The results were also used to develop performance threshold criteria for the considered tests. The results showed that the IDT-HT and RR tests can be used to screen the rutting potential of asphalt mixtures meeting VDOT mixture volumetric and gradation requirements for the A and D mixtures. The initial performance criteria for the IDT-HT and RR tests were established for these mixtures. Based on the results, the IDT-HT test was found to be the most suitable alternative test to the APA test. The study recommends using the IDT-HT test as part of the BMD initiative with a corresponding minimum strength of 133 kPa as a performance criterion based on the testing conditions used in this study. Implementation of traffic-based performance criteria for the A and D mixtures should be explored, as the current practice does not differentiate the performance between these mixtures. The results of the IDT-HT, RR, and the APA tests should be compared and correlated with those from fundamental rutting tests and with performance predictions obtained from mechanistic-empirical pavement design simulations using a larger number of mixtures to verify the findings of this study. In addition, the results should be compared to field performance results for full assurance that the implemented tests and associated threshold values are appropriate. Fine-tuning the testing process for the IDT-HT, RR, and APA tests and establishing precision estimates and statements are necessary for proper quality assurance practices. The study further recommends hands-on training and demonstration of the tests being considered by VDOT as part of the BMD implementation.
