This book was released on 1998 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arboreal lichens are critically important winter forage for caribou in parts of British Columbia. Forest managers can make better decisions about whether, where, and how to log in caribou habitat if they have information about the abundance of these lichens. This publication supplements the field guide entitled "Estimating the abundance of arboreal forage lichens" by providing information on the rationale for assessing lichen abundance, the proper use of the field guide, the characteristics of lichen data sets, using the field guide to make lichen assessments at the reconnaissance level (including sampling techniques, the use of field transects, data compilation and analysis, and using the data to manage caribou habitat), use of the field guide for planning at the block level (including calculation of lichen biomass, mapping lichen abundance, planning a silviculture prescription), and using the guide to improve adaptive management.

Book excerpt: In British Columbia caribou spend much of the year in high elevation forests and during winter feed almost exclusively on arboreal lichen (lichen growing on trees). Increasingly, timber harvesting has advanced into caribou habitat. The impact of this harvesting can be substantial, since the removal of trees means the removal of lichen; clearcutting eliminates all arboreal lichen within a cutblock. Because lichen spreads and grows slowly, a century or two may pass before a clearcut will again supply lichen for caribou. This handbook describes a method to gather lichen abundance information for forest and wildlife managers. It will help users estimate: proportions of the two main types of forage lichen, and overall abundance of the forage lichen. The first part of the handbook introduces the two types of lichen. Photos showing various mixes of the two types are provided for users who need to estimate percentages. The second, and major part, of the handbook is a guide to rating overall lichen abundance. It includes two sets of photo series, showing boundaries between lichen classes: one illustrates individual trees with different amounts of lichen, and another shows the same photos, but arranged to facilitate comparison between different trees. The final part of the handbook provides more information on the zone within a tree in which to estimate lichen abundance and explains how the classes relate to actual lichen biomass. It also includes suggestions for further reading.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, up-to-date review of lichens as biomonitors of air pollution (bioindication, metal and radionuclide accumulation, biomarkers), and as monitors of environmental change (including global climate change and biodiversity loss) in a wide array of terrestrial habitats. Several methods for using lichens as biomonitors are described in a special section of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lichens are highly valued ecological indicators known for their sensitivity to a wide variety of environmental stressors like air quality and climate change. This report summarizes baseline results from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Lichen Community Indicator covering the first full cycle of data collection (1998-2001, 2003) for Washington, Oregon, and California. During this period, FIA conducted 972 surveys of epiphytic macrolichen communities for monitoring both spatial and long-term temporal trends in forest health. Major research findings are presented with emphasis on lichen biodiversity as well as bioindication of air quality and climate. Considerable effort is devoted to mapping geographic patterns and defining lichen indicator species suitable for estimating air quality and climate.
