Book excerpt: The Post Oak Savannah of Texas contains species of shrubs and small trees for which there is little information of standing biomass estimation equations available. Estimation by substituting biomass equations of similar species can result in substantial error. Non-destructive biomass prediction equations for dry weight and fuel size classes were determined for post oak, eastern redcedar, gum bumelia and honey mesquite in Bastrop County, using basal diameter, height and crown area. Of the six tested equation forms, the logarithmic model provided the best results for predicting dry weight for post oak, gum bumelia and eastern redcedar. None of the six equation forms estimated biomass successfully for honey mesquite. The same six equations were applied to the data for fuel size estimation. Post oak foliage was the only fuel size class that were adequately predicted with the logarithmic model. Since the models did not adequately predict most fuel size classes, percentages of fuel size classes by diameter were used.
