Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis was to estimate genetic correlations between female fertility and feed efficiency measurements. Fertility data were collected from two Ontario beef herds and feed efficiency data were collected from one station with animals that originally came from five Ontario beef herds. Genetic parameters were estimated for female fertility traits (first-service conception rate, pregnancy rate, number of services per conception, gestation length and days-to-calving) and feed efficiency traits (feed conversion ratio, residual feed intake, average daily dry matter intake, average daily gain and metabolic mid-test body weight). Heritabilities for fertility traits were low to moderate and feed efficiency traits were moderate to highly heritable. Both traits need to be evaluated and considered in selection programs. Results indicate that animals with larger body weight are related to better fertility performance. An unfavourable correlation was found between residual feed intake and days-to-calving.

Book excerpt: Milk fat influences the economic, nutritional, flavour, and physico-chemical properties of milk and milk products. Genetic selection for fat components is therefore of interest. This would require an efficient means of phenotyping these traits routinely, on a large scale. The purpose of this study was to assess the ability to predict milk fat components using mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy and to examine the phenotypic and genetic variation of these traits. Individual cow milk samples from multiple breeds and herds were collected during routine milk recording multiple times throughout the lactation and the MIR spectra obtained. Milk samples were further analyzed for average milk fat globule (MFG) size and fatty acid profile using gold standard methodologies. Partial least squares regression models were employed to develop equations to predict the milk fat component traits from the MIR spectra of milk samples. Genetic parameters were estimated in Holsteins for both the measured and predicted MFG size and predicted fatty acids, along with their genetic correlations with milk production traits using multi-trait animal models. Milk fatty acid contents could be predicted with variable accuracy depending on the calibration set used and the concentration of the fatty acid in milk. In first-parity Holsteins, the predicted groups of fatty acids were found to have genetic correlations of similar magnitude with already recorded milk production traits. Differences in the genetic correlations with fat yield, fat and protein percentages, and fat to protein ratio were found for different fatty acid groups, including different trends in average daily genetic correlations at the beginning of lactation. Average MFG size was significantly affected by herd, breed, days in milk, season, and milking period. The prediction of MFG size from MIR spectra was poor, and predicted values had greater phenotypic correlations with fat percentage than their measured counterparts. A moderate heritability was found for average MFG size, but predicted values had very strong genetic correlations with fat percentage, limiting their utility. Mid-infrared technology provides an opportunity to obtain novel trait phenotypes, including fatty acids, for all milk recorded cows that could be used to help advance the Canadian dairy industry.

Boars had 6 measurements during test, and bulls approximately 9. Covariance components for random-regression coefficients wereestimated by the REML method and the VCE5 software package. Orthogonal Legendre polynomials (LG) of different order were fit to random effects. Modelfor bulls included direct additive genetic and animal permanent environmental effects, while in boars common litter environment, common pen environment, and maternal genetic effect were fitted additionally. LG with four coefficients were found sufficient in both species. Animal permanent environment accounted for 35 to 40 % of phenotypic variabilitry in boars, and between 30 and 55 % in bulls. Estimates of direct heritability in bulls were in the range 0.22 to 0.45, inm boars were around 0.40. Maternal heritability in boars decreased from 0.03 to 0.01. The proportion of common litter effect decreased over time (0.24 to 0.15), too. The eigenfunctions and corresponding eigenvalues in both species showed that around 85 to 90 % of the total geneticvariability was explained by the constant term in regression, while 10 to 15 % was genetic variability in the shape of growth curve. In bulls, a combined random regression and conventional multi-trait model for body weight (BW) and five single measured carcass traits was studied. Estimated genetic correlation over time between BW and warm carcass weight, conformation index, and ratio muscle:bone increased with time from +0.02 to +0.80 (+0.60), between BW and ratio of valuable cuts was close to zero the entire time. Changing the shape of growth curve by selection is possible, but not easy. Using the results of the combined random-regression and multiple-trait analysis in selection could be an advantage for carcass traits.

Evidence suggests that horse populations are growing by 15 to 20 percent each year, a level that is unsustainable for maintaining healthy horse populations as well as healthy ecosystems. Promising fertility-control methods are available to help limit this population growth, however. In addition, science-based methods exist for improving population estimates, predicting the effects of management practices in order to maintain genetically diverse, healthy populations, and estimating the productivity of rangelands. Greater transparency in how science-based methods are used to inform management decisions may help increase public confidence in the Wild Horse and Burro Program.

The aquaculture industry can learn a great deal from these experiences, because the basic theory behind selective breeding is the same for all species. The ?rst published selection experiments in aquaculture started in 1920 s to improve disease resistance in ?sh, but it was not before the 1970 s that the ?rst family based breeding program was initiated for Atlantic salmon in Norway by AKVAFORSK. Unfortunately, the subsequent implementation of selective breeding on a wider scale in aquaculture has been slow, and despite the dramatic gains that have been demonstrated in a number of species, less than 10% of world aquaculture production is currently based on improved stocks. For the long-term sustainability of aquaculture production, there is an urgent need to develop and implement e- cient breeding programs for all species under commercial production. The ability for aquaculture to successfully meet the demands of an ever increasing human p- ulation, will rely on genetically improved stocks that utilise feed, water and land resources in an ef?cient way. Technological advances like genome sequences of aquaculture species, and advanced molecular methods means that there are new and exciting prospects for building on these well-established methods into the future.
