Coarse woody debris (CWD, tree remains greater than or equal to 20cm in diameter), which makes up 20% of the aboveground forest biomass, can be an important indicator of historical forest disturbance events and is an important variable for establishing carbon storage baselines. Eighty plots (0.04 ha) located in old-growth temperate deciduous forest within Lilley Cornett Woods Ecological Research Station (LCW), southeastern KY, USA, were used to assess spatial and temporal dynamics in CWD. These plots were sampled for CWD three times (1989, 1999, and 2012) using identical methods and all samples were identified to species, assigned to a decomposition class, and measured in length and width to estimate volume and sample biomass. We found an increasing trend in CWD biomass that was both evenly-distributed across species and exhibited a distinct spatial pattern. The increasing deposition and spatial relationship were explained by recent disturbance events, as well as environmental variables. Because less than 1% of northeastern forests are old growth and climate change alters forest carbon balance, this study satisfies a current need for ongoing documentation of old-growth forests.

A prominent feature of forests around the world, CWD represents a considerable storage of nutrients and energy in these systems. Forest management practices have tended to reduce quantitites of CWD in many forests. Despite the acknowledged importance of CWD, little is known about how it influences ecological processes in many ecosystems, or of how forest management affects its role in biogeochemical cycling, especially in forested wetlands. This project examined the effect of forest management and flood frequence on the biomass and decay rate of river red gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehn.) CWD in the Millewa State Forest on the River Murray floodplain in south-eastern Australia. To determine the effect of forest management on quantities of CWD, surveys of CWD biomass were carried out in old-growth (unmanaged) forest, and in managed, frequently flooded and infrequently flooded forests. The rate of decay of CWD in frequently flooded and infrequently flooded forests was measured by assessing weight loss from logs cut over the last 47 years. Total biomass of CWD in the old-growth, frequently flooded river red gum forest in this study was typical of old-growth forests studied in other countries, although the biomass of fallen CWD was relatively high. Total CWD biomass in the old-growth, frequently flooded forest was significantly greater than in managed, frequently flooded and managed, infrequently flooded forests, which were not significantly different. Wood decay rates (k) were 0.0041 y-1 for frequently flooded samples, and 0.0045 y-1 for infrequently flooded samples. These rates are very low by world standards. Turnover of CWD in old-growth forest was greater than in both managed frequently flooded and managed, infrequently flooded forests. In frequently flooded, managed forest, leaf litter had a greater turnover than CWD. Storage of nitrogen in CWD in both old-growth, frequently flooded and managed, frequently flooded forests was greater than storage in leaf litter. In river red gum forests, CWD may be more important as a storage of nutrients and energy than as a contributor to organic matter turnover. Forest management has substantially reduced quantities of CWD in the Millewa forests, but frequency of flooding has little influence on decay of red gum CWD during the first 47 years after logging.0.

Microorganisms are essential in mitigating excess carbon and play a notable role in the breakdown of organic material. This process, decomposition, is essential in forested ecosystems where microorganisms can recycle nutrients and store carbon in soil organic matter or release it through respiration. Fungi participate in decomposition through the release of enzymes responsible for carrying out the chemical reactions that break down plant material. Species introductions have the potential to alter decomposition dynamics. In the Midwestern US, the invasive shrub species Lonicera maackii has overtaken many forests and is likely altering decay dynamics and the destiny of carbon within the region. Thus, it is essential to monitor the decay of woody debris under invasion pressures of L. maackii in order to monitor nutrient cycling in this region. I placed blocks of native Quercus rubra and economically important Pinus radiata in an L. maackii invaded forest for one year to determine environmental, enzymatic and fungal drivers of decomposition. Decomposition was faster for oak wood than pine wood, and decomposition rate was not directly altered by L. maackii. Instead, L. maackii increased the moisture of the decomposing wood, leading to higher amounts of hydrolytic enzyme activity which structured fungal communities within decaying wood. This insinuates that despite not altering decomposition rates directly, L. maackii is priming native woody debris for faster decomposition and therefore increasing the rate of nutrient turnover. Thus, L. maackii imposes shifts to fungal communities and their functionality and the soil environment. These changes could become especially important in later stage decay where there will likely be perceptible differences in decay rates as altered by L. maackii. The changes L. maackii imposes on decomposition will likely lead to faster carbon release from forested ecosystems and shorter retention times. Consequently, to ensure effective management strategies that mitigate excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, monitoring decomposition of woody material in invaded forests is imperative.

Considerable debate continues over the ability of such management practices to achieve this objective given limited understanding of coarse woody detritus (CWD) dynamics, fuel bed alterations, and post-fire vegetative growth. The objective of this study was to estimate the dynamics of snags and logs in conjunction with surface fuel accumulation following high-severity fire disturbance in dry-mixed conifer forests of Oregon's eastern Cascades. Snag dynamics (fall and breakage rates) were estimated for Abies sp., Pinus ponderosa and Pinus contorta in three DBH classes of 23 cm (small), 23-41 cm (medium) and41 cm (large). A total of 5,103 snags in thirty 0.25-ha plots were sampled at seven different fire sites, covering a 24 year chronosequence following high-severity fire disturbance. Pinus ponderosa and Pinus contorta snags had the quickest fall rates with estimated half-lives of 7-8 and 12-13 years for small and medium sized snags, respectively. Large Pinus ponderosa snags had an estimated half-life of 17-18 years. Abies sp. snags fall rates were slower, with half-life estimates of 8-9, 14-15 and 20-21 years for small, medium and large snags respectively. Breakage rates were variable but correlated with wood strength, crown and stem weight and crown position (exposure to wind). Decomposition loss rate-constants were obtained from the same fire sites, up to seven years post-fire, by removing three cross-sections from each of sixty fire-killed Abies sp. snags, sixty Pinus ponderosa snags, and forty Pinus ponderosa logs. Abies sp. snags exhibited significant decay with an estimated decomposition loss rate-constant of k = 0.0149 yr−1. Pinus ponderosa snags did not exhibit significant decay, but logs did. Sapwood and heartwood decomposition loss rate-constants equaled k = 0.0362 yr−1 and k = 0.0164 yr−1, respectively. These values confirm hypothesized differences in decay rates among species and between snags and logs in dry forest environments. An empirical model was developed to link snag fall and breakage with snag and log decomposition during succession in order to estimate the contribution of fire killed biological legacies to fine and coarse woody detritus accumulation. Legacy CWD is responsible for the largest total accumulation of surface fuel as snags break and fall, but primarily in 100- and 1000-hr fuel classes. Decomposition rates increase as CWD moves from standing to downed material, reducing total CWD biomass by 30-50% in 24 years. Fine fuels are primarily derived from post-fire vegetation and steadily increase over the 24-year period. Herbaceous fuel loads peak within 2-4 years but decrease rapidly as Ceanothus velutinus and Arctostaphylos patula shrubs establish quickly and steadily increase in total biomass over 24 years. Spread rates and flame lengths in post-fire environments are primarily driven by fuels generated from new growth. The dynamic process of snag fall and breakage, and decomposition of snags and logs, limits CWD's effect on fire spread and intensity if reburning occurs, although soil heating and total heat release can be exacerbated by the combustion of decayed logs. Salvage logging significantly reduces CWD fuels but has limited impacts on other fuel bed components. Results of this study suggest post-fire management decisions consider vegetation dynamics as well as dead wood dynamics if reducing fire hazard is a primary objective.
