Download or read book Technical Thermodynamics for Engineers written by Achim Schmidt and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 987 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book covers the classical areas of technical thermodynamics: The first part deals with the basic equations for energy conversion and idealized fluids. The second part deals with real fluids, which can be subject to a phase change, for example. Furthermore, thermodynamic mixtures of fluids are considered, e.g., humid air and gas mixtures. In the last part of the book, combustion processes and chemical reactions are presented and thermodynamically balanced. In each chapter, there are examples and exercises to deepen the theoretical knowledge. Compared to the first edition, the topic of thermodynamic state diagrams has been greatly revised. State diagrams of relevant refrigerants have been added as well as a formulary. The section on chemically reacting systems has been expanded and thoroughly revised. In the basic chapters, tasks and examples have been added to consolidate the understanding of the subject. The book is aimed at students of mechanical engineering and professional engineers.

Book Synopsis Advanced Thermodynamics for Engineers by : D. Winterbone
Download or read book Advanced Thermodynamics for Engineers written by D. Winterbone and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 1996-11-01 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the basic theories of thermodynamics are adequately covered by a number of existing texts, there is little literature that addresses more advanced topics. In this comprehensive work the author redresses this balance, drawing on his twenty-five years of experience of teaching thermodynamics at undergraduate and postgraduate level, to produce a definitive text to cover thoroughly, advanced syllabuses. The book introduces the basic concepts which apply over the whole range of new technologies, considering: a new approach to cycles, enabling their irreversibility to be taken into account; a detailed study of combustion to show how the chemical energy in a fuel is converted into thermal energy and emissions; an analysis of fuel cells to give an understanding of the direct conversion of chemical energy to electrical power; a detailed study of property relationships to enable more sophisticated analyses to be made of both high and low temperature plant and irreversible thermodynamics, whose principles might hold a key to new ways of efficiently covering energy to power (e.g. solar energy, fuel cells). Worked examples are included in most of the chapters, followed by exercises with solutions. By developing thermodynamics from an explicitly equilibrium perspective, showing how all systems attempt to reach a state of equilibrium, and the effects of these systems when they cannot, the result is an unparalleled insight into the more advanced considerations when converting any form of energy into power, that will prove invaluable to students and professional engineers of all disciplines.
Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Applications by : Ingo Müller
Download or read book Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Applications written by Ingo Müller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-12 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermodynamics is the much abused slave of many masters • physicists who love the totally impractical Carnot process, • mechanical engineers who design power stations and refrigerators, • chemists who are successfully synthesizing ammonia and are puzzled by photosynthesis, • meteorologists who calculate cloud bases and predict föhn, boraccia and scirocco, • physico-chemists who vulcanize rubber and build fuel cells, • chemical engineers who rectify natural gas and distil f- mented potato juice, • metallurgists who improve steels and harden surfaces, • - trition counselors who recommend a proper intake of calories, • mechanics who adjust heat exchangers, • architects who construe – and often misconstrue – ch- neys, • biologists who marvel at the height of trees, • air conditioning engineers who design saunas and the ventilation of air plane cabins, • rocket engineers who create supersonic flows, et cetera. Not all of these professional groups need the full depth and breadth of ther- dynamics. For some it is enough to consider a well-stirred tank, for others a s- tionary nozzle flow is essential, and yet others are well-served with the partial d- ferential equation of heat conduction. It is therefore natural that thermodynamics is prone to mutilation; different group-specific meta-thermodynamics’ have emerged which serve the interest of the groups under most circumstances and leave out aspects that are not often needed in their fields.
Book Synopsis Thermodynamics: Basic Principles and Engineering Applications by : Alan M. Whitman
Download or read book Thermodynamics: Basic Principles and Engineering Applications written by Alan M. Whitman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-04 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is for a one semester introductory course in thermodynamics, primarily for use in a mechanical or aerospace engineering program, although it could also be used in an engineering science curriculum. The book contains a section on the geometry of curves and surfaces, in order to review those parts of calculus that are needed in thermodynamics for interpolation and in discussing thermodynamic equations of state of simple substances. It presents the First Law of Thermodynamics as an equation for the time rate of change of system energy, the same way that Newton’s Law of Motion, an equation for the time rate of change of system momentum, is presented in Dynamics. Moreover, this emphasis illustrates the importance of the equation to the study of heat transfer and fluid mechanics. New thermodynamic properties, such as internal energy and entropy, are introduced with a motivating discussion rather than by abstract postulation, and connection is made with kinetic theory. Thermodynamic properties of the vaporizable liquids needed for the solution of practical thermodynamic problems (e.g. water and various refrigerants) are presented in a unique tabular format that is both simple to understand and easy to use. All theoretical discussions throughout the book are accompanied by worked examples illustrating their use in practical devices. These examples of the solution of various kinds of thermodynamic problems are all structured in exactly the same way in order to make, as a result of the repetitions, the solution of new problems easier for students to follow, and ultimately, to produce themselves. Many additional problems are provided, half of them with answers, for students to do on their own.

Book excerpt: This textbook covers basic principles of equilibrium behavior for systems of interest to chemical engineering, including elementary microscopic concepts. A strong emphasis is placed on fundamentals: energy conservation in open and closed systems (first law), temperature, entropy and reversibility (second law), fundamental equations, and criteria for equilibrium and stability. These concepts are then applied to the analysis of energy conversion processes, mixing, phase equilibria, and chemical reactions.
Book Synopsis Essential Engineering Thermodynamics by : Yumin Zhang
Download or read book Essential Engineering Thermodynamics written by Yumin Zhang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineering Thermodynamics is a core course for students majoring in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Before taking this course, students usually have learned \textit{Engineering Mechanics}—Statics and Dynamics, and they are used to solving problems with calculus and differential equations. Unfortunately, these approaches do not apply for Thermodynamics. Instead, they have to rely on many data tables and graphs to solve problems. In addition, many concepts are hard to understand, such as entropy. Therefore, most students feel very frustrated while taking this course. The key concept in Engineering Thermodynamics is state-properties: If one knows two properties, the state can be determined, as well as the other four properties. Unlike most textbooks, the first two chapters of this book introduce thermodynamic properties and laws with the ideal gas model, where equations can be engaged. In this way, students can employ their familiar approaches, and thus can understand them much better. In order to help students understand entropy in depth, interpretation with statistical physics is introduced. Chapters 3 and 4 discuss control-mass and control-volume processes with general fluids, where the data tables are used to solve problems. Chapter 5 covers a few advanced topics, which can also help students understand the concepts in thermodynamics from a broader perspective.
