This volume opens with a brief, enlightening description of the differing numeric systems devised by various cultures. The multitude of practical applications involving mathematics are then shown and explained, including measurements of weight and volume, monetary calculations, the binary system and its application in computer science, and much more. Architecture is discussed in terms of its fundamental relationship to principles of geometry. The circle, angles, and trigonometric functions are described, and fundamental principles of calculus and probability are touched upon. This easy-to-comprehend volume makes imaginative use of charts and diagrams to explain mathematical reasoning. There are color photos and illustrations on every page.

Book excerpt: The field of mathematics education is the product of many people writing around some (disparate) ideas that have congealed into the semblance of a thing that looks solid, that looks fixed. The field is, however, a foam: a volatile substance made from many bubbles (foci) emerging, popping, merging, and splitting. Following in the genealogical tradition of Michel Foucault, I look back at the emergence of this field called mathematics education research to trace the emergence of foci of study. By looking at those articles published between 1970 and 2019 in the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education (JRME), as well as those published since 2010 in for the learning of mathematics (flm) and Educational Studies in Mathematics (ESM), the results of this citation network analysis show that the foci of the field have not been fixed nor is there consensus around so-called proper foci today. This fluid and dissensual nature of our evolving field gives me hope. What mathematics education research is today is not a natural inevitability, but the product of human action, the collision of incident, orthogonal, and/or opposite forces, and while its trajectory is tied to its origins, it is not tied to it deterministically. The field of mathematics education research, as it has been, limits what we can say is mathematics education research, see as counting as mathematics education research, think as mathematics education, and do in the name of mathematics education research. These limits on what can be seen, said, thought, and done in the name of mathematics education research, what is (non)sensical, constitute a distribution of the sensible. This book serves as an outline and perturbation of those sensible limits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic Mathematics and Statistics for Science is a low-level introduction to the essential techniques students need to understand. It assumes little prior knowledge, and adopts a gentle approach that leads through examples in the book and website. No other text provides this range of educational support for science students. The integration between book and website provides study options that would be impossible through a book alone, and allows students to study in ways that suit their own circumstances and preferences. The combination of book and website also provides ready-prepared material for lectures, tutorials and computer practicals. Tutors can use the material to develop a variety of coherent programme using different learning styles. The book develops the mathematics and statistics through examples and questions that reflect the scientific context, and has succeeded in being relevant to a range of undergraduate science programmes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A first-class mathematician's lucid, unhurried account of the science of numbers from arithmetic through the calculus." — James R. Newman, The World of Mathematics. This highly accessible introduction to mathematics is geared toward readers seeking a firm grasp of the essentials of mathematical theory and practice. The treatment also offers a concise outline of mathematical history and a clearer notion of why mathematicians do what they do. Author E. C. Titchmarsh, who served for many years as Savilian Professor of Geometry at Oxford University, begins with counting and the fundamentals of arithmetic. He guides readers through the complexities of algebra, fractions, geometry, irrational numbers, logarithms, infinite series, complex numbers, quadratic equations, trigonometry, functions, and integral and differential calculus. Titchmarsh's graceful, fluid style helps make complicated topics easier to grasp, and his inclusion of numerous examples will prove especially helpful to readers with little or no background in mathematics.

Book excerpt: Essential Mathematics for Games and Interactive Applications, 2nd edition presents the core mathematics necessary for sophisticated 3D graphics and interactive physical simulations. The book begins with linear algebra and matrix multiplication and expands on this foundation to cover such topics as color and lighting, interpolation, animation and basic game physics. Essential Mathematics focuses on the issues of 3D game development important to programmers and includes optimization guidance throughout. The new edition Windows code will now use Visual Studio.NET. There will also be DirectX support provided, along with OpenGL - due to its cross-platform nature. Programmers will find more concrete examples included in this edition, as well as additional information on tuning, optimization and robustness. The book has a companion CD-ROM with exercises and a test bank for the academic secondary market, and for main market: code examples built around a shared code base, including a math library covering all the topics presented in the book, a core vector/matrix math engine, and libraries to support basic 3D rendering and interaction.

They arise in an essential way in many areas of mathematics and mathematical physics, but require considerable time and computational effort to generate. Few collected drawings are available for reference, and little has been written, in book form, about their enumerative a
