Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Reviews, and Addresses: Ecclesiastical, Historical The following papers differ from the T heological and Philosophical Essays reserved for the next Volume, not so much in their main subject, as in their mode of treating it. In dealing with a religious problem, they address them selves, not to its theoretic essence, but to its practical bearings on human life in historic schools and organized Churches. Called forth for the most part by some social event, like The Papal Aggression, or some special pub lication, like an Oxford Tract, now half - forgotten, they might seem to be without excuse for their reappearance were it not that, for the right appreciation of transient phenomena, appeal must often be made to critical prin ciples far from transient. I have given nothing a place in these pages without first satisfying myself that its mode of reasoning and rules of moral judgment are available, mm'atz's mutana'z's, no less for the determination of still pending questions, than for a right verdict on the parties and controversies of the past. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Ecclesiastical History, Vol. 2 of 2: To Which Is Added, an Essay on Christian Temperance and Self-Denial The subject of the present lecture is remarks on the Origin, the nature, and the consequences of the controversies, that, in the early ages, arose in the church, and on the methods that were taken to terminate them by diocesansynods, and ecumenical councils. Though this may, at first sight, appear a digression from the examination of the Roman policy, exercised in raising the Wonderful fabric of Spiritual tyranny, yet, on a nearer View, it will be found to be intimately connected with that policy, insomuch, that, the progress of the latter is, without a competent knowledge of the former, scarcely intelligible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Critical Study of Ecclesiastical History: Attempted in an Account of the Progress, and a Short Notice of the Sources, of the History of the Church It can scarcely necessary to apologize to the English public for the appearance of a single volume, on a subject which has in Germany already been treated in several works. Since the publication of the Introduction to Ecclesiastical History by Sagittarius and Schmid in the beginning of the last century, Schorckh in the first volume of his Church-history, and C. W. F. Walch, Royko, Pfrogner, Flugge, and Staudlin, in separate works, have laboured to extend an acquintance with this branch of knowledge, and have rendered the literary history of church-history familiar to their countrymen. In the mean time no work of the kind has been undertaken among ourselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Ecclesiastical Biography I prefix these few words to these volumes, not to deprecate criticism, which is always a vain and is not always a sincere attempt, but in order to explain that such censures as may justly be due to what I have written, have not been provoked by an y inordinate solicitude of mine to appear before the world in mv own person as the writer of a book, nor by any wish to assume to myself the character of a teacher on the sacred topics to which so large a part of this book is devoted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Early Ecclesiastical History: To 476 A. D The object of this series is to provide for the clergy and laity of the Church a statement, in convenient form, of its Doctrine, Discipline and Worship - as well as to meet the often expressed desire on the part of Examining Chaplains for textbooks which they could recommend to candidates for Holy Orders. To satisfy, on the one hand, the demand of general readers among the clergy and laity, the books have been provided with numerous references to larger works, making them introductory in their nature; and on the other hand, to make them valuable for use in canonical examinations, they have been arranged according to the canons of the Church which deal with that matter. It is the earnest hope of the collaborators in this series that the impartial scholarship and unbiased attitude adopted throughout will commend themselves to Churchmen of all types, and that the books will therefore be accorded a general reception and adopted as far as possible as a norm for canonical examinations. The need of such a norm is well known to all. And finally a word to Examining Chaplains. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Ecclesiastical History I proceed now to consider the ends which may be answered by ecclesiastical history, and to inquire what is the readiest and most profitable way of studying it. Before that memorable era, the incarnation of the Son of God, the history of the church of God was the history of one particular people, first distinguished by the name of the patriarch Israel, (otherwise called jacob) whose descendants they were and after the loss of the ten tribes, who were carried into captivity by Shalma nezer, king of Assyria, denominated from Judah, one of the sons of Jacob, and one whose progeny the greater part of the remnant were, the nation of the Jews. The history of that mph, and the history of the church, was under the Mosaick economy the same thing. Neither do we find in the annals, and other remains of those ancient. Times, the least vestige of the distinction of a community into church and state, such as hath obtained universally in the nations who have received the christian law. This distinction hath given rise to a speciesof history, whereof the world before had not conceived so much as an idea. It may not therefore be improper, in the first place, to trace its origin, that we may the better apprehend what is meant by the history of the church. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foregleams of Christianity: An Essay on the Religious History of Antiquity 'We have gone a long way since Maurice delivered his Boyle Lectures, and Mr. Scott has kept his eye persistently on the masters who have spoken since,'... 'This essay in its revised edition will take its place in the great and fascinating course of study that lies before us - the study of comparative religions.' - Expository Times, May, 1893. 'We have every confidence in recommending Mr. Scott's new edition to our readers.' - Religious Review of Reviews, October 14, 1893 'The book shows wonderful industry and collection of authorities, with an ingenious arrangement of the elements of the various religious systems, but whilst the great leading results may be acceptable as being (probably) commonly agreed on, one stands in doubt of "the sacerdotal organization of which the type has been most perfectly realized in the apostolical succession."' - Presbyterian, October 20, 1893. 'Certainly Mr Scott deserves thanks for having continued his able and suggestive work.' - Glasgow Herald, January 26, 1893. 'Some excellent remarks on the acceptance of polytheism by such races as the Greek may be found in Foregleams of Christianity,' - Herbert H. Jeaffreson, The Church of The Living God. 'Un savant anglais, W. Scott, en un livre que je regrette de ne pas voir traduit dans notre langue, Foregleams of Christianity, excelle a mettre en lumiere la vérite de toutes les erreurs, la legitimité de tous les systemes, faux par ce qu'ils nient, vrais par ce qu'ils affirment.' - Joseph Serre, La Religion De Desprit Large. Opinions of the Press on the First Edition. 'The appearance of such an essay, written from the orthodox side, by one who is no less fearless than true, augurs well for the future defenders of the Faith, and amply proves that really Catholic minds can be more liberal and broadly sympathetic than those whose boasted toleration has very awkward and narrow limits.'... In order to encourage our readers to procure the essay and study it with the attention it deserves, we just note the subjects of the chapters.'... 'For English readers we know of no better guide to the subject with which it deals, and venture to hope that the author may be induced to follow up a line of study for which he is so well prepared.' - Church Times, December 27, 1878. 'To Mr C. N. Scott's "Foregleams of Christianity" must be assigned an important place among the semi-theological publications of the present season.'... 'Mr Scott's method may be heartily commended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Introductory Lectures on the Study of Ecclesiastical History This is a brief but necessary sketch of the first part of our subject. This is the ancient period of Ecclesiastical History. Its full treasures must be unfolded hereafter. Its accessories belong to other departments of study. The critical interpretation of the sacred books in which the history is con tained falls under the province of general Theology and Exegesis; the explanation of the languages in which they are written I gladly leave to the Pro fessor of Hebrew and the Professor of Greek. But the history itself of the Chosen People, from Abra ham to the Apostles, belongs to this Chair by right and, if health and strength are spared to me, shall also belong to it in fact.
