Book Synopsis The Legacy of Friedrich Von Hayek by : Peter J. Boettke
Download or read book The Legacy of Friedrich Von Hayek written by Peter J. Boettke and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three volumes on the economist/humanist, Friedrich von Hayek (1900-92) are divided into politics (v.1), philosophy (v.2), and economics (v.3), areas which Hayek attempted to interweave. The set begins with a general introduction in which Boettke maintains that Hayek is narrowly remembered for his opposition to socialism despite his Nobel Prize for economics (1974) and his scholarship in theoretical psychology, political philosophy, legal anthropology, the philosophy of science, and the history of ideas. Boettke describes Hayek this way: "... a technical economist, concerned with philosophical issues; a philosopher of mind, pursuing the implications of his conclusions on the nature of the mind for social scientific research; and a classical liberal political economist seeking to integrate the knowledge from technical economics and philosophy for the way we understand and study the political order of a free people." The introduction, ending with a chronology of Hayek's career, and a chronological list of his publications is followed by a total of 72 reprinted articles from the 1960s to the 1990s by scholars with only their professional association listed. Contributors include M. Polanyi, Carlo Zappia, Israel M. Kirzner, Mario Rizzo, John Gray, Jacob Viner, Richard Bellamy and numerous others. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
Book Synopsis The Scottish Enlightenment and the Theory of Spontaneous Order by : Ronald Hamowy
Download or read book The Scottish Enlightenment and the Theory of Spontaneous Order written by Ronald Hamowy and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every step and every movement of the multitude, even in what are termed enlightened ages, are made with equal blindness to the future; and nations stumble upon establishments, which are indeed the result of human action, but not the execution of any human design. Adam FergusonDuring the Scottish Enlightenment, David Hume, Adam Smith, Adam Ferguson, and other lesser thinkers described a theory of spontaneously generated social order. Ronald Hamowy discusses their contributions to this significant area of social theory, noting that the revolutionary aspect of these philosophers thoughts was the proposition that social phenomena of a high degree of intricacy are not the product of intentional design. Hamowy shows that Hume is best known for his application of the theory to justice, developing it most thoroughly in the "Treatise of Human Nature. "Adam Smith s first treatment of it is in the "Theory of Moral Sentiment, "published before the significant "Wealth of Nations. "There Smith uses it to explain the development of general rules that compose the moral fabric of societies. All of these thinkers used their notion of spontaneously generated social order to explain systems of moral rules and social systems. In addition Adam Ferguson and David Hume applied the theory to language, as well as to economic development."

Book Synopsis Types of Canadian Women and of Women who are Or Have Been Connected with Canada by : Henry James Morgan
Download or read book Types of Canadian Women and of Women who are Or Have Been Connected with Canada written by Henry James Morgan and published by . This book was released on 1903 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a collection of more than 350 biographical sketches of Canadian women, spanning three centuries. Each entry is contained on a single page, and presents a portrait of the woman. Many entries show a reproduction of the woman's handwritten signature. Woman are presented alphabetically by their married name, often including the woman's date of birth and marriage, as well as a description of her husband and his accomplishments, their children, and her membership in societies and organizations. Overall, the sketches celebrate women's primary roles as dutiful wife and mother and active community member. The majority of women Morgan features are white, upper-middle class, and married, those who prioritized traditional (i.e., heteronormative) family life. He also writes warmly, however, of women who were unmarried and forged successful careers in the arts - a fairly forward-thinking approach for the time. There is no question that Types of Canadian Women is a product of its time. Nonetheless, it provides a rare glimpse into the lives of women in Canada, recording many important milestones and achievements that otherwise may have been lost. For contemporary readers, the publication is exciting to peruse for its many familiar names: philanthropists Lillian Massey, of the Massey manufacturers of agricultural equipment, and Grace Redpath, of Redpath Sugar fame; war heroine Laura Secord; and author Catharine Parr Traill.18 True, Morgan draws attention to the men in women's lives. At the same time, however, he conveys respect for married women's contributions to family life and single women's career achievements alike, suggesting that value can be found in either path. His attitude was a progressive one for anyone - male or female - writing at the turn of the twentieth century.Book was published as the first of two volumes, but a second volume was never issued.
