Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the end of the Cold War, the economic reforms in the early 1990s, and ensuing impressive growth rates, India has emerged as a leading voice in global affairs, particularly on international economic issues. Its domestic market is fast-growing and India is becoming increasingly important to global geo-strategic calculations, at a time when it has been outperforming many other growing economies, and is the only Asian country with the heft to counterbalance China. Indeed, so much is India defined internationally by its economic performance (and challenges) that other dimensions of its internal situation, notably relevant to security, and of its foreign policy have been relatively neglected in the existing literature. This handbook presents an innovative, high profile volume, providing an authoritative and accessible examination and critique of Indian foreign policy. The handbook brings together essays from a global team of leading experts in the field to provide a comprehensive study of the various dimensions of Indian foreign policy.

This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on the External Policy of India On his arrival in India, he found Sir William Muir Foreign Secretary, under Sir John Lawrence as Viceroy, and he soon established himself on good terms with his new superiors. About this time he made his first appearance as a public speaker, on the occasion of the Oxford and Cambridge dinner at Calcutta, at which he was selected to return thanks for the Civil Service. He took the precaution of learning his speech by heart, and sent home his ms. Copy to his mother. It boldly uttered his dissatisfaction with the present system of competition for Indian appointments, in so far as it tends to shut out candidates from a University education. This dissatisfaction became more deeply rooted in Wyllie's mind as the number of University men year by year diminished in the list of the successful competitors, and received its final expression in a printed letter from him to Sir Charles Trevelyan. I believe that every member of the service, and indeed all who have had practical experience of the working of the system in India, take the same view. In Wyllie 3 case such sentiments are particularly worthy of notice for they are not the utterance of one who was calling up, after the lapse of a considerable interval, the transfigured memories of his undergraduate days, but of one who had volun teered to undergo his final University examinations at the mature age of thirty-one. Book excerpt: In 2016 India became the world's fastest growing large economy, overtaking China. India's resurgence has renewed global interest in the geopolitical implications of India's economic rise. Sanjaya Baru's book explores India's evolving geo-economic relations with the West and with Asia, particularly China, in the aftermath of the global financial crisis of 2008-09. These essays analyze the influence of business and trade on foreign policy, India's approach to multilateralism and the relevance of regional trade integration for the Indian economy and South Asia. The essays were written after Baru served a term in the Prime Minister's Office in New Delhi as a key advisor to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during India's negotiation of a civil nuclear energy agreement with the United States. They show the author's intimate knowledge of India's external economic policies, acquired from his vantage position as an influential newspaper editor and an advisor to the Prime Minister.

Book excerpt: The decade from the 2008 global financial crisis to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic has seen a real transformation of the world order. The very nature of international relations and its rules are changing before our eyes. For India, this means optimal relationships with all the major powers to best advance its goals. It also requires a bolder and non-reciprocal approach to its neighbourhood. A global footprint is now in the making that leverages India's greater capability and relevance, as well as its unique diaspora. This era of global upheaval entails greater expectations from India, putting it on the path to becoming a leading power. In The India Way, S. Jaishankar, India's Minister of External Affairs, analyses these challenges and spells out possible policy responses. He places this thinking in the context of history and tradition, appropriate for a civilizational power that seeks to reclaim its place on the world stage.

Book excerpt: After India gained Independence from the United Kingdom in 1947, it strongly supported independence movements in other colonies. Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, was the architect of India's foreign policy. During the Cold War, India adopted a foreign policy of not aligning itself with any major power bloc. However, India developed close ties with the Soviet Union and received extensive military support from it. The end of the Cold War significantly affected India's foreign policy, as it did for much of the world. In the post-Cold War era, a significant aspect of India's foreign policy is the 'Look East Policy' launched in 1992. India's growing economy, strategic location, and a large and vibrant Diaspora have won it more allies and partners. The foreign policy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi indicates a shift towards focusing on the Asian region and, more broadly, trade deals. This volume contains 9 research articles, authored by scholars in the field of political science, international relations, comparative politics, economics, security studies, and political economy. These contributions provide useful material to understand contemporary dynamics of India's foreign policy and diplomacy.
