Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays of Poets and Poetry: Ancient and Modern It is needless to say that no one of the nine Essays contained in this volume has been written within the last two years and a half. The earliest, that on the "Art of Translation," was first published as long ago as 1895, in the Quarterly Review, the others in the same periodical, or in the Monthly Review, at intervals extending over some ten years. The latest, that on "In Memoriam after Fifty Years," appeared in the Edinburgh Review early in 1906, shortly after the first, and separate publication by Lord Tennyson of this poem with his father's annotations. I had hoped to have reprinted these Essays, as I am now doing, in book form, before the present date, but delayed to do so, promising myself more opportunity of rehandling than I have ever found time to accomplish. When in 1906 I became Vice-Chancellor, all hope of considerable retouching in any near future entirely disappeared. I was confronted with the alternative of allowing them to wait still longer, or of reprinting them as they were, with such limited amount of revision as had been, or was now, possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Poems The poets of the present day who would raise the epic song cry out, like Archimedes of old, give us a place to stand on and we will move the world. This is, as we conceive, the true difficulty. Glane ing for a moment at the progress of epic poetry, we shall see that the obscurity of fabulous times could be adapted to the earliest development only of the heroic character. There is an obvious incongruity in making times so far remote the theatre on which to represent the heroism of a civilized age; and it adds still more to the difficulty, that, although the darkness of fable still invests them, reason will no longer perceive the beings which the infant credulity of man once saw there. With your permission, ladies and gentlemen, I shall confine myself chiefly this afternoon to the first half of that topic and deal specially with emotional influence. I shall speak of change in subject, and the introduction of new subjects next week, though I cannot be certain that anybody who is here to-day will be here next week. I suppose it is impossible - at any rate, I feel it to be impossible in surroundings with the scientific traditions of these - to enter upon a disquisition on any subject without, I won't say some attempt at definition, but, at any rate, some recognition that definitions exist, some reference to definition and I feel that I simply must begin, although I shall not go very far with that matter, by asking What is Poetry? And What is Subject? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kinds of Poetry: And Other Essays Of these essays, the first appeared in the Journal of Philosophy, Psychology and Scientific Methods for November 7, 1912; the second appeared in the Columbia University Quarterly for December, 1915; the third appeared in the Yale Review for January, 1917. The fourth essay is here printed for the first time. It should be observed, perhaps, that the first and second essays consider chiefly the reader's attitude toward poetry, and that the third and fourth essays emphasize rather the writers point of view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetry and Fiction: Essays Criticism, in whatever fancy dress, however, remains an art of opinion, and though the Opinion should be supported by evidence, even that relation is a questionable one. Criticism is not knowledge, but neither ought it to be mystique, even if the sources of our opinions, and the influence of fashion upon these, are mysterious subjects. Whether the writings in this book succeed as criticism is not for me to say, but perhaps it is fair for me to set forth briefly a few of the objects I tried to keep in mind. Critical method. To try not to have one. Or to have, at the most, two simple precepts: read what is in the poem; do not read what is not in the poem. To give evidence for assertions, so that the reader may have a way of knowing when his author has gone badly wrong. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems and Essays, Vol. 1 of 2 I DO not think that any reader of the poems and essays which these volumes contain can fail to wish for some further insight into the character of their author. I am aware, indeed, that Mr. Roscoe's career was not in any way one to justify a formal biography, or even an extended memoir. For though his intrinsic claims to some permanent, if modest, place in English lite rature may probably be conceded by most competent judges of his literary remains, there was certainly no thing in his external life to render Mr. Carlyle's most pathetic question in any way inapplicable to his case. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Ancient Modern Learning and on Poetry Temple's fame has waned since the days when the essays here reprinted were Pope's favourite prose; but these still maintain their historical importance, for they represent a turning point in the development of English style, and in them something of the tone and temper of the eighteenth-century essay are already apparent. Goldsmith need not have told us that Temple's style was 'the model by which the best prose writers in the reign of Queen Anne formed theirs', nor Swift that Temple 'advanced our English tongue to as great perfection as it can well bear'; to read aloud a single essay is to discover for oneself this forgotten secret. Johnson suggested to Boswell at least one of the causes of this reforming power: 'Sir William Temple was the first writer who gave cadence to English prose. Before his time they were careless of arrangement, and did not mind whether a sentence ended with an important word or an insignificant word, or with what part of speech it was concluded.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetry and Prose: Being Essays on Modern English Poetry This little book is an attempt to make a little clearer what every one feels about poetry. It is an attempt pursued in a number of essays upon themes so familiar that in writing upon them I have the advantage of touching directly upon the actual poetical experience of almost every reader. There is the further personal advantage that in dealing with a body of poetry so often analysed, the liability to individual caprice is, at least in part, eliminated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Guess: Essays on Poetry and the Poets Tans: papers are by way of answer to questions concerning the power and place, the principles and tests, of the art of song. Ah attempt is made to outline the case of poetry; to run back the record, and select the essentials established by the common voice of the ages. Despite a touch here and there for the sake of unity, or to bring the subject down nearer to date, the fragmentary origin remains apparent. Given out little by little during a series of years, in the shape of talks to young enquirers, the matter is, as now presented, rather for such than for those older, who know these things though they too often heed them not.
