Book excerpt: This compilation of essays covers a variety of subjects: economics, politics, law, finance, education, media, military, and international relations, focusing on public policy in the emerging economy of Nigeria. Put together in one neat volume, the essays are at once original as they are full in depth and breadth. The methodological approach to this collection was based on a careful dissection of crucial aspects of public policy in their raw elements and placed in the context of their conceptual and empirical groundings. The book marries theory and practice to critique policy choices and proffer alternative options to fill the gaps where necessary. The eclectic mix of theories deployed for analysis stands out from the conventional approach seen in standard textbooks. No book on the market will have engaged with the effect of monetarism and supply-side economics versus public ownership and dependency logic; theories of democracy and pluralism versus militarism and dictatorship; distributive justice versus social justice; and "free and fair" election as a concept against "substantial compliance" with legal requirements at the end results. The intersection between theoretical assumptions and public policy is the mechanic's workshop for this book. The essays have been written to appeal to a wide audience across different socio-economic strata, but also carefully manicured by data to raise their essence beyond a passing interest in the subject matter, to one the reader will generally find arresting, and certainly illuminating. Rather than producing a single-subject standard text in a typically isolated fashion, the approach to this volume is deliberately multidisciplinary as it is multifaceted. This book is part of the African World Series, edited by Toyin Falola, Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair in the Humanities, University of Texas at Austin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nation building is not a project for the faint-hearted or for those with a short memory. It needs statesmen and women, thinkers and active citizens. And it takes very little for granted. In this book, essayist, activist, and organizer, Chido Onumah, explains all this using as his raw material Nigeria's contemporary political economy and history. In law as in politics, countries are defined by a population within bounded territories under a common sovereign. Boundaries, howsoever defined, are, however, not facts of nature; they are artificial. They can be formed, re-formed, un-formed, negotiated and re-negotiated. In this collection, Chido Onumah makes a case for not taking Nigeria or its citizens for granted. It is at once a passionate cry for a better country; a compelling argument for rational debate about the future of the country; and an articulate appeal for committed citizenship. In this book, Chido Onumah shows what is possible when national issues are tackled with rigour and intellectual honesty. Somewhat more than the arguments that it seeks to put forward, therefore, this book is also a record of Nigeria's contemporary history in the last quarter century, from the perspective of a Nigerian whose growing up happened during the period. Fittingly, it is published on the cusp of the Nigerian centenary. This book does not set out to win a popularity contest. Its passion is relentless; its prose is committed and its logic takes few prisoners. Most who read it will find something in it to disagree with and also much in it to agree with. But such is the enterprise of nation building. If this book reminds us of the unfinished tasks of nation building at the exclamation point of Nigeria's Centenary, then the author has served a brilliant purpose. - (Chidi Anselm Odinkalu, Ph.D., Chair of the Governing Council, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Nigeria).

Book excerpt: Democradura: Essays On Nigeria's Limited Democracy is a collection of articles penned by Professor Femi Mimiko, mni, over a 30-year period. The broad theme is Nigeria's tortuous attempts at building democracy and laying the basis for nation-building and inclusive development, undertaken over the past 57 years of the country's relative political independence. Taken together, the 164 essays in the book traverse diverse issue-areas, from education, through contestation for power by a notoriously fractious ruling elite, to Nigeria's tentative engagement with the global system. While the narrative is largely conducted within the theoretical rubric of political economy, this is done in an easy-to-comprehend manner, which makes Democradura a compelling addition to the rich corpus of literature on the Nigeria project.

Book excerpt: Leadership and Governance is a collection of essays on political economy, leadership and governance, and corruption and community development, as well as on information technology and education. This book, thus, presents a broad overview of the major problems facing the Nigerian economy. Towards that, the contributors highlight the relationship between good leadership and governance and the economic health of Nigeria as they explore the forces for a meaningful change in the polity. This book asserts that political leaders in Nigeria should be held to a higher standard of leadership and governance in order for the economy to grow and develop for 'common good'. Nigeria's educational system is the foundation for its national development. But this is impossible without investing in human capital (education and health), fixing the existing dilapidated infrastructure and institutions and acquiring technological capability that drive the economy. The power of productivity of the Nigerian economy cannot rise above the quality of its leadership, governance and graduates. Today Nigeria's young democracy is in a state of uncertainty because of ineffective leadership and governance as well as lack of accountability. Since all the essential factors are missing in Nigeria's scheme of affairs, its economy as well as the democracy transition will continue to choke and stagnate. There are myriad ways to reform the Nigerian educational system, improve its quality of graduates and the state of the economy. But closing the nation's higher institutions for five months on the pretext that there is no money to meet teachers demands is not a way to improve the state of education and its weak economy. The trouble with Nigeria's democracy is that the people do not get the type of government they want. For instance, praying to God only, as President Goodluck Jonathan often does, to rescue the nation from its challenges is not by any means a strategy to solve Nigeria's socioeconomic and political problems. His administration needs to adopt a long-term strategy for creating a learning culture to improve the state of education and the security situation so as to tackle its development challenges. This includes motivating the teachers, treating them as professional they really are, and providing them with the tools to effectively educate the youths. Like the Nigerian economy without functional infrastructure and institutions, the leaders cannot strip the teachers of the tools they need to perform their duties and expect them to perform miracles. New challenges require new paradigms. The political leaders should adopt new, effective and innovative methods to meet the needs of the economy, the rapidly growing population and the ethno-religious and politically dynamic society. This book posits that without a paradigm shift in values, beliefs and thinking on ways to reform the Nigerian educational system, as well as to invest in the commanding heights of the economy, its educational system and the economy would remain prostrate with its attendant catalogue of human misery.

Book excerpt: One of the tasks of activists, socialists and public intellectuals is not just to fight for a better society but also to accumulate the experience of the people in a society over time, and bring out a general abstraction, otherwise called theory from it. This theory, drawn out from active human activities, should serve at least two purposes: to provide a repository of facts, history and data for generations; and provide a basis to look into the future i.e. provide prognosis. No society can progress without accumulating its experience of the past, and building new ideas through them. As much as practice is very important, as it provides means through which previously formulated theories and ideas are confirmed, rejected or amended, it also need to learn from accumulated experience and history represented by time-tested theories and ideas. Therefore, inasmuch as theory and ideas are necessary, they can only be sustainable and time-tested when it is premised on practice, and properly reflect practice and experience. On the other hand, practice and activities that do not learn from time-tested theory and ideas will achieve little. This is the premise upon which this book is written. Revolutionary Pen is a compilation of articles and essays written for close to a decade by this writer. It aggregates socialist positions on various national and international developments. From Nigeria's 2015 elections to economy, politics, social development, developmental issues, strategies and tactics of working class struggles, ideological debates, crisis of education sector and international issues in Africa, Middle East and beyond, these essays provide opportunity to remind the society of forgotten issues and development, and draw a link between the past and the present, as a way of charting the way for the future. This book seeks to serve as a repository of ideas, experience, perspectives and history for the working people, youth, working class and other resistance platforms. This book is also a contribution to theoretical debates and discussions in working class movement and intellectual community. Therefore, it hopes to serve working class movement, activists' community, left and socialist movements, as well as intellectual and academic communities, both nationally and internationally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of State and Society in Nigeria, published in 1980, was and remains a dominant influence in teaching, research, policy and practice of state-society relations in Nigeria for more than a generation. The volume of essays has remained one of the most cited in the field – testimony to its enduring content and perspective as well as the beauty, accessibility and clarity of its language. This new edition revisits, extends and reconsiders aspects of the first edition in light of developments in the literature since 1980 and offers new insights and interpretations on issues of political economy, politics, and sociology such as the country’s Civil War (1967-1970) the political economy of oil, debt, and democratization and the complexities and ethnic identities and rivalries and religious accommodation and conflict, and of the multiple ways in which they intersect with one another.
