Book excerpt: I explore the implications of an increasingly integrated world economy on production patterns, levels of innovation activity and technology diffusion, and welfare across countries in a series of three essays. First, I analyse the gains from openness to international trade and multinational production (MP) across countries in a general equilibrium framework where innovation activity and technology are endogenously determined. The gains from openness to trade and MP implied by the calibrated model are in general much larger than the gains previously reported in the literature, reflecting productivity gains from inward MP, additional profits to multinationals and their affiliates around the world from outward MP, and the benefits of specialisation across production and research activities. Second, I examine the role of international trade in spreading the benefits of technology embodied in machinery and equipment around the world and the contribution of different country characteristics that promote or inhibit these benefits. The results explain why the International Comparison Program's data on equipment prices tend not to fall with levels of development across countries. Third, I examine the empirical relevance of Rybczynski effects, skills biased technical change, and increased global production sharing in explaining Israel's adjustment to immigration of Russian Jews in the 1990s. My findings provide new evidence that all three mechanisms played an important role in Israel's adjustment. The conclusions of this thesis suggest that the gains from participating in a global economy are potentially large but depend in large part on the extent to which the benefits of technology are spread around the world, which in turn depends on geography and other country characteristics. -- provided by Candidate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overarching theme of my research is on issues related to innovation, with a focus on how different firms react to technological changes. These include new markets that are developed through international trade agreements, new production technology as a product of research and development (R & D), and even new regulations and standards that change the production process of a firm. We divide these changes into several categories, by whether they are mandatory or voluntary, whether they are 'horizontal' or 'vertical', or whether they are 'direct' or 'secondary' effects of a social change. First, we look at the responses of countries when mandatory changes are exogenously imposed. In order to do this, we look at the case of how international labor standards impact bilateral trade. Through this estimation, we examine how countries react not only in terms of adopting the standards, but also how they react when their trading partners adopt more standards. The impact of such technological change is heterogeneous across conventions and industries. We find that the international standards significantly explain the extensive margin of trade, but less of the intensive margin of trade. Second, we look at the endogenous responses of firms to market forces and firm level constraints. We model a firm which has an option to invest and improve their own productivity. A theoretical examination shows that the general equilibrium effect of innovation is positive by increasing consumer welfare through lower prices and added variety of goods. The model also shows policy implications related to market entry costs such as RD subsidies. Last, we look at technological changes as an externality. The case we examine is when technology is introduced due to the behavior of other firms. We look at the case of Chile, and examine how foreign direct investment (FDI) impact the exit behavior of firms. We see that survivability of domestic firms is effected by the behavior of multinationals, and that the level of technology of the industry is a significant factor in determining exit rates.

Chapter 1 studies the impact of the IT revolution on productivity growth and sectoral reallocation of economic activities in the U.S. I analyze the role of information and communications technologies (ICT) in facilitating knowledge diffusion in the economy. The increased flow of ideas between firms and industries improves learning opportunities and spurs innovation, while at the same time broadens accessibility of knowledge to potential competitors. I develop a general equilibrium endogenous growth model featuring this mechanism. In the model, industries are heterogeneous in their external knowledge dependence. The model implies that the IT revolution triggers reallocation of economic activities towards sectors that are more externally dependent. I empirically validate the mechanism of the model using data on patents, citations, and ICT. Quantitative analysis using the calibrated model illustrates that it is important to account for both technological heterogeneity and the knowledge-diffusion role of ICT to explain recent U.S. trends in productivity dynamics. Chapter 2 (joint with Ufuk Akcigit and Stefanie Stantcheva) studies the effect of top tax rates on "superstar" inventors' international mobility since 1977, using panel data on inventors from the U.S. and European Patent Offices. We find that superstar inventors' location choices are significantly affected by top tax rates. The elasticity of the number of domestic inventors to the net-of-tax rate is between 0.04 and 0.06, while that of foreign inventors is around 1.3. These elasticities are lower for non-superstar inventors and larger for inventors in multinational companies. Chapter 3 studies the impact of non-compete laws (NCL) on the creation of employee spinouts and the implications of this process for aggregate productivity growth. Using patents and inventors data, I identify spinout entrants and document a set of new empirical facts about innovative spinouts and NCL in the U.S. Consistent with these empirical facts, I develop an endogenous growth model to study the implications of spinout formation and NCL for growth. Numerical experiments from the calibrated model illustrate that it is both growth- and welfare improving to abolish existing non-compete restrictions.
