Book excerpt: Businesses are increasingly being called upon to improve their Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) performance. The need to tackle a range of concerns, both environmentally and socially, can be seen in the United Nations' 17 development goals set forth in 2015. Beyond governments and regulators, businesses themselves are increasingly aware of the importance of addressing such issues. Two hundred of the top CEOs of the country have emphasized the importance of the role that businesses play in confronting community-related issues and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) (Murray 2019). In a series of three essays, this dissertation focuses on the social and environmental sustainability aspects of ESG, thus contributing substantially to the overall domain of sustainability. The first essay examines the impact of leader-worker disability status similarity on front-line manufacturing worker productivity using micro-data gathered from a real-world organization in Michigan. It contributes to the nascent field of inclusive operations and explores how organizations can both be profitable and inclusive of traditionally marginalized workers. The essay focuses on the moderating influence of direct supervisors with a disability on workgroup productivity as the number of workers with disabilities increases. Results suggest that a direct supervisor with a disability does indeed benefit the productivity of workers with disabilities. This benefit, however, is the mitigation of potential productivity declines as the number of workers with a disability increases in the workgroup. A follow-up qualitative study is performed to understand the mechanisms of the productivity benefit by interviewing 50 workers and supervisors with and without disabilities across three organizations. The second and third essays focus on the issue of water, a resource that is increasingly important as an environmental concern. As a resource shared between communities and firms, water is an essential component of building sustainable cities and communities.The second essay examines trade-offs and synergies experienced by organizations when reducing water use and carbon emissions using secondary panel data of large firms. Previous research has found differing results of organizations trading off carbon emissions and water. Some have found reducing one comes at the expense of the other, while other research has found organizations can reduce these two concerns jointly. This past research, though, has generally been qualitative and at the facility level, without quantitative analysis at the firm level. This research fills this gap by providing a firm-level examination of such potential trade-offs using a combination of Data Envelopment Analysis and econometric methods.The third essay uses a vignette experiment with real-world procurement professionals to examine how buyers weigh the competing environmental concerns of carbon emissions and water use reductions in the supply chain against supplier location (local vs. offshore suppliers). The results show an overwhelming preference for local suppliers with lower carbon emissions, to the extent that a supplier with a superior overall environmental performance may be passed over in pursuit of local suppliers with marginally lower carbon emissions.

Book excerpt: The field of Logistics and Supply Chain Management (LSCM) suggests that transactions, collaboration, and value are important in the supply and delivery of products and services to meet the need of impoverished end-consumers. In many cases, the application of LSCM is paramount in most strategic decision-making efforts. Therefore, this research explores the applications of LSCM processes and activities within the community-based context. The methodology used to address the research questions consisted of a hybrid of mixed methods. This mixed methodology provides three essays that investigate the application and development of LSCM in the community-based context. The essays address the flow of charitable products and services through supply chains. The dissertation does not pay close attention to the first-tier suppliers' suppliers, which is looking at the originating flow of goods and services (raw materials, manufacturing, etc.). However, the dissertation puts a focus on products and services supplied to focal organizations and how these products are then passed on to end-consumers. Essay I looks at the transaction (costs) that ensue from the supply of charitable products. Essay II analyzes a social service ecosystem and investigates how the network of organizations enable the distribution of charitable products and services. Lastly, Essay III examines the delivery of valuable services to the end-consumers, and what tools Community-Based Enterprises (CBEs) should focus on to develop and retain end-consumers in impoverished communities. The research provides conceptual models that review some fundamental LSCM achievement gaps in supplying, delivering and providing social services to end users within impoverished communities. The dissertation draws upon literature from the fields of economics, marketing, social science, and logistics and supply chain management. The dissertation uses the primary research method of unstructured and semi-structured interviews, case studies, written survey instruments and system dynamics within three studies. The studies resolve to look into the term Community-Based Logistics and Supply Chain Management (CBLSCM) as employed by social service providers in the logistics and supply chain context and investigate how it applies to impoverished communities. The research identifies conceptual models that can be used to explain the role of LSCM within humanitarian aid context. The models offer insights on the managerial implications and evidence of using LSCM processes and techniques within impoverished communities. The research has considered that the type of transactional relationships, structure, shared value, service systems, and consumer value, retention and management mechanisms can be achieved utilizing LSCM.

Book excerpt: The rural has long been regarded as an important site of geographical inquiry even if our understanding of it has not always been treated as conceptually different from the urban. That said, rural research has pursued a number of distinct empirical agendas ranging from the operation and impacts of agribusiness, to local resistance to global food supply chains, to differing representations of the rural. In doing so, rural geographers have critically examined the relevance and significance of ideas drawn from numerous traditions including political economy, ecological modernization and cultural theory, amending them as appropriate, in their search to understand the nature and trajectory of rural areas. Up until the 1980s, attention remained largely focused upon agriculture as the primary land-use but increasingly new forms of rural consumption - housing, recreation, nature conservation - have taken centre stage as the primacy of local agricultures has been undermined by reduced state protection and 'new' rural populations which have migrated out from the city. More recently, research has been dominated by the 'cultural turn' with particular emphases upon society-nature relations, interpretations of landscape, marginalised others, and analyses of the relations between representation and practice. In the last decade, a more holistic view of the rural, bringing together different aspects of the two previous themes, has emerged through more politically-oriented studies of rural governance concerned with the functioning of interest groups, participation, protest and the allocation and management of resources. The volume is thus structured into three sections concerned with agriculture and food, the rural, and rural governance. The great majority of the selected papers combine both empirical material - often highly informative case studies - and important conceptual arguments about change in the rural condition that can be linked to ideas being employed elsewhere in Geography and the Social Sciences more generally. These critical reflections have been drawn very largely from research conducted in advanced economies which at least provide some commonality of experience allowing the transfer of ideas between what otherwise might be seen as very differing geographical contexts.

Book excerpt: Supply chains have grown increasingly global and interconnected over the past decades. Technological advancements have enabled organizations to pursue improved performance while simultaneously reducing costs; all in pursuit of increased profits. However, this same supply chain globalization has amplified companies' risk exposures. These risks lead to increased supply chain disruptions- interruptions in the flow of materials and products between entities in supply chains. At the same time, high-impact disasters- from various causes- are increasing in frequency. For example, evidence from the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed how discrete events cause ripples felt across industries and geographies. Therefore, it is essential to improve our understanding of resilience- an organization’s ability to withstand, recover and grow from disruption- not only to further scientific knowledge, but also to provide actionable guidance to our practitioner community. This dissertation examines how organizations respond to disruptions and communicate those disruptions- to partner organizations and public stakeholders. In Chapter 2, we utilize semi-structured interviews to explore how an organization’s capabilities of agility, adaptability, and alignment (AAA capabilities) connect to and enable its resilience. We find empirical evidence suggesting that alignment between and within organizations drives the ability to respond to short-term disruptions (agility) and make long-term adjustments (adaptability). In Chapter 3, we utilize an online scenario-based experiment to assess whether the timing and accuracy of shared disruption-related information influence the relationship between a buyer and supplier. Much of the literature on information sharing during supply chain disruptions assumes that the information transmitted is accurate, an assumption unlikely to be true given the uncertainty surrounding supply chain disruptions. We show that when a supplier shares information quickly, regardless of that information’s accuracy, the buyer has greater trust and willingness to continue the relationship with the supplier. In chapter 4, we collect a unique dataset of qualitative documents to investigate how organizations communicate a sustained component shortage. We find that organizations utilize a broad playbook of communication strategies to broadcast the shortage and their response to that shortage to public stakeholders. Finally, in Chapter 5, we provide conclusions. Each chapter of this dissertation expands the theoretical understanding of how organizations can better respond to disruptions and pursue resilience. Additionally, each chapter offers practical applications for organizations experiencing disruptions.
