To have the history of the Bible amongst the most constant bible reading people in the world must be an interesting matter to all. The history of the Welsh magazines is a part of the history of religion in Wales, and is important apart from its literary value. How the Welsh bible and magazines were left out of such a work as the "Encyclopedia Britannica" we are at a loss to understand. We hope, however, that the next edition of that excellent work will include articles on these subjects. Until something better will appear, these two essays, we hope, will be of help to those who desire to know more than they do in this respect. Shall we also hope that they may create that desire in others who have it not? The article on the First Welsh Biblical Dictionary is given partly in order to do justice to the author of that book.

This book focuses in particular on: the fifteenth- to eighteenth-century Welsh-language bards, such as Gwerful Mechain, Angharad James, and Marged Dafydd; the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century English-language poets, including Katherine Philips, Jane Brereton, Anne Penny, and Anne Hughes; contributors to the Romantic movement in Wales, such as the poets and novelists Mary Robinson and Ann of Swansea; the mid-nineteenth-century protesting voice of polemicists such as Jane Williams (Ysgafell); the Victorian English-language novelists, for example Louisa Matilda Spooner, Anne Beale, Amy Dillwyn, Allen Raine, and Mallt Williams, and their concern with national, class, and gender identities; and early twentieth-century Welsh-language writers engaged with Welsh Home Rule and women’s suffrage issues, such as Gwyneth Vaughan and Eluned Morgan. Roland Mathias was born at Talybont-on-Usk in 1915. Having taught in various parts of Britain, he retired in 1969, to live in Brecon. Roland Mathias helped to found Dock Leaves, later the Anglo-Welsh Review, which he edited from 1961 to 1976. A poet, he has published seven volumes, including Burning Brambles (1983), his 'selected poems'. He has also written a collection of short stories, and books on Vernon Watkins and John Cowper Powys, as well as editing books on David Jones, an anthology of short stories and Anglo-Welsh Poetry 1480-1980, with Raymond Garlick.
