Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Literature: A Series of Essays And whatever may be thought of some of his opinions on matters of detail - on anonymity, for instance, or on the question whether good work is never done for money - there can be no doubt that his general view of literature, and the conditions under which it flourishes, is perfectly sound. It might be thought, perhaps, that remarks which were meant to apply to the German language would have but little bearing upon one so different from it as English. This would be a just objection if Schopenhauer treated literature in a petty spirit, and confined himself to pedantic inquiries into matters of grammar and etymology, or mere niceties of phrase. But this is not so. He deals with his subject broadly, and takes large and general views; nor can anyone who knows anything of the philosopher suppose this to mean that he is vague and feeble. It is true that now and again in the course of these essays he makes remarks which are obviously meant to apply to the failings of certain writers of his own age and country; but in such a case I have generally given his sentences a turn, which, while keeping them faithful to the spirit of the original, secures for them a less restricted range, and makes Schopenhauer a critic of similar faults in whatever age or country they may appear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Prose: A Series of Related Essays for the Discussion and Practice of the Art of Writing They have therefore aimed to present a series of related selections that would arouse thought and provoke oral discussion in the class-room, as well as furnish suitable models of style. In most cases the pieces are too long to be adequately handled in one class hour. A live topic may well be discussed for several hours, until its various sides have been examined and students are awakened to the many questions at issue. The editors have aimed, also, to supply selections so rich and vital in content that instructors themselves will feel challenged to add to the class discussion from their own knowledge and experience, and so turn a stream of fresh ideas upon "stock notions." Thus English composition, which in many courses in our larger institutions is now almost the only non-special study, can be made a direct means of liberalization in the meaning and art of life, as well as an instrument for correct and effective writing. The present volume therefore differs from others in the same field. Many recent collections contain pieces too short and unrelated to satisfy the ideals suggested above - ideals which, the editors feel sure, are held by an increasing number of teachers. And older and newer collections alike have been constructed primarily with the purpose of illustrating the conventional categories, - description, narration, exposition. Teachers of composition everywhere are becoming distrustful of an arrangement which is frankly at variance with the actual practice of writing, and are of the opinion that it is better to set the student to the task of composition without confining him too narrowly to one form of discourse. The editors have deliberately avoided, however, the other extreme, which is reflected in one or two recent volumes, of choosing pieces of one type to the exclusion of all others. In collections of this kind variety in form and subject-matter is fully as important as richness of content. Robert Louis (Balfour) Stevenson (November 13, 1850-December 3, 1894), was a Scottish novelist, poet, and travel writer, and a leading representative of Neo-romanticism in English literature. He was the man who "seemed to pick the right word up on the point of his pen, like a man playing spillikins," as G. K. Chesterton put it. He was also greatly admired by many authors, including Jorge Luis Borges, Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling and Vladimir Nabokov. Most modernist writers dismissed him, however, because he was popular and did not write within their narrow definition of literature. It is only recently that critics have begun to look beyond Stevenson's popularity and allow him a place in the canon.

All our arts and occupations lie wholly on the surface; it is on the surface that we perceive theirbeauty, fitness, and significance; and to pry below is to be appalled by their emptiness and shockedby the coarseness of the strings and pulleys. In a similar way, psychology itself, when pushed to anynicety, discovers an abhorrent baldness, but rather from the fault of our analysis than from anypoverty native to the mind. And perhaps in æsthetics the reason is the same: those disclosureswhich seem fatal to the dignity of art seem so perhaps only in the proportion of our ignorance; andthose conscious and unconscious artifices which it seems unworthy of the serious artist to employwere yet, if we had the power to trace them to their springs, indications of a delicacy of the sensefiner than we conceive, and hints of ancient harmonies in nature. This ignorance at least is largelyirremediable. We shall never learn the affinities of beauty, for they lie too deep in nature and too farback in the mysterious history of man. The amateur, in consequence, will always grudgingly receivedetails of method, which can be stated but never can wholly be explained; nay, on the principle laiddown in Hudibras, that

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Art of Writing It doubtless will be a still greater surprise to the reader to be told that there are yet retained in our language not a few of the primitive pictures that antedate writing, al tered and modified, to be sure, through ages of use, dur ing which interval they have become greatly simplified and conventionalized. All written languages contain these silent witnesses of their pictorial origin, existing like the persistence of ancestral traits in individual tribes; or to be nearer our point, like the roots of their spoken words converging different dialects back to a common linguistic parent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Art These essays were written in the autumn of 1914 as part of a series of talks on art appreciation. In committing them to writing, my purpose was to help the student to recognize and to live the principles of art and to apply them in his work according to his own discernment. I am happy to be able now, to give these short essays a wider field in the hope that they may help to foster the love of art and its significance in life. At no better time than this, could I express my appreciation of the encouragement given to me to write, by my friend, Leonard Van Noppen, whose wise counsel I gratefully acknowledge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seldom does one come across a work as simple yet immensely helpful as On the Writing of English by George Townsend Warner. Written with an earnest appeal to students of the English language, Warner provides the pillars of essay writing in the most easy to understand manner in this book. In the introduction itself he sets the tone for the subsequent pages with a heartfelt appeal to all for following the basic tenets of writing properly. On the Writing of English is divided into multiple chapters, each dealing with a particular aspect of creating the perfect essay. The book contains notes on style of writing, gathering material, proper grammar as well as sentence construction among many other issues that go into writing well. Warner breaks up the art of essay writing into various sections and deals with each one at a time. These include the pointers to keep in mind while developing the essay, the pitfalls to be wary of as well as merits and the art of choosing the right phrases and words for optimum impact. The work also contains an appendix of different writing styles as templates for readers to follow. On the Writing of English is useful to the general reader as much as it is to students of the language. It contains within it certain directives as well as well thought out and highly intuitive interventions to improve the quality of prose. Warner's ability to highlight the many pitfalls and common traps of writing an essay are particularly enlightening. This title is a worthy reference handbook for anyone who wishes to improve their writing abilities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The essays in this anthology address questions of genre, such as realism and sensationalism; questions of gender and authorship; questions of form, such as characterization, plot construction, and narration; and questions about the morality of fiction. The editor discusses where Victorian writing on the novel has been placed in accounts of the history of criticism and then suggests some reasons for reconsidering this conventional evaluation. Among the featured essayists and critics are John Ruskin, Walter Bagehot, George Henry Lewes, Leslie Stephen, Anthony Trollope, and Robert Louis Stevenson; the classic essays include George Eliot’s “Silly Novels by Lady Novelists” and Henry James’s “The Art of Fiction.”

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Book excerpt: From Holbein to Hockney, from Norman Rockwell to Pablo Picasso, from sixteenth-century Rome to 1980s SoHo, Robert Hughes looks with love, loathing, warmth, wit and authority at a wide range of art and artists, good, bad, past and present. As art critic for Time magazine, internationally acclaimed for his study of modern art, The Shock of the New, he is perhaps America’s most widely read and admired writer on art. In this book: nearly a hundred of his finest essays on the subject. For the realism of Thomas Eakins to the Soviet satirists Komar and Melamid, from Watteau to Willem de Kooning to Susan Rothenberg, here is Hughes—astute, vivid and uninhibited—on dozens of famous and not-so-famous artists. He observes that Caravaggio was “one of the hinges of art history; there was art before him and art after him, and they were not the same”; he remarks that Julian Schnabel’s “work is to painting what Stallone’s is to acting”; he calls John Constable’s Wivenhoe Park “almost the last word on Eden-as-Property”; he notes how “distorted traces of [Jackson] Pollock lie like genes in art-world careers that, one might have thought, had nothing to do with his.” He knows how Norman Rockwell made a chicken stand still long enough to be painted, and what Degas said about success (some kinds are indistinguishable from panic). Phrasemaker par excellence, Hughes is at the same time an incisive and profound critic, not only of particular artists, but also of the social context in which art exists and is traded. His fresh perceptions of such figures as Andy Warhol and the French writer Jean Baudrillard are matched in brilliance by his pungent discussions of the art market—its inflated prices and reputations, its damage to the public domain of culture. There is a superb essay on Bernard Berenson, and another on the strange, tangled case of the Mark Rothko estate. And as a finale, Hughes gives us “The SoHoiad,” the mock-epic satire that so amused and annoyed the art world in the mid-1980s. A meteor of a book that enlightens, startles, stimulates and entertains.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from View of My Own: Essays in Literature and Society Many people believe letters the most personal and revealing form of communication. In them we expect to find the charmer at his nap, slumped, Open-mouthed, profoundly himself Without thought for appearances. Yet, this is not quite true. Letters are above all useful as a means of ex pressing the ideal self; and no other method of communi cation is quite so good for this purpose. In conversation, those uneasy eyes upon you, those lips ready with an emen dation before you have begun to speak, are a powerful de terrent to unreality, even to hope. In art it is not often possible to make direct use of your dreams of tomorrow and your excuses for yesterday.
