Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is a collection of three independent essays in applied microeconomic theory. The first chapter, co-authored with Milena Almagro, explores the conditions under which a state promotes a shared national identity on its territory. A forward-looking government that internalizes identity dynamics shapes them by implementing nation-building policies. Assimilation attempts are constrained by political unrest, electoral competition, and the intergenerational transmission of identities. We find the long-run evolution of identities to be highly sensitive to initial conditions and to temporary shocks that affect the relative political power of the ethnic groups. Interestingly, when the conditions to promote the national identity are not present, the central government avoids long-run con ict by allowing regional identities to thrive. The results point to different nation-building behavior between autocracies and democracies, with the latter being more likely to preserve regional identities. The second chapter, co-authored with Natalia Fabra, analyzes how firms' incentives to operate and invest in energy storage depend on the market structure. For this purpose, we characterize equilibrium market outcomes allowing for market power in storage and/or production, as well as for vertical integration between storage and production. Market power reduces efficiency through two channels: it induces an inefficient use of the storage facilities, and it distorts investment incentives. We illustrate our theoretical results by simulating the Spanish wholesale electricity market. The results are key to understanding how to regulate energy storage, an issue which is critical for the deployment of renewables. The third chapter explores the difficulties that endogenous preferences pose for normative work, using environmental policy design as a motivating example. I first assess how the major positions in welfare economics can be adapted to contexts in which policies shape preference formation. The implications for policy design of using different welfare criteria are then illustrated with a simple model of carbon pricing. An empirically implementable method is proposed to micro-found the relative weights that a standard welfarist approach could give to pre-policy and post-policy preferences.

Book excerpt: Non-Tariff Barriers, Regionalism and Poverty is a collection of key articles in three important areas of applied international trade research: measuring non-tariff barriers and their effects, the consequences of regional trading arrangements, especially on the countries excluded from them, and the connection between international trade and poverty. Drawing from 30 years of research and experience, L Alan Winters illustrates the development of techniques of this field and his continued commitment to answering real policy questions at the times at which they are debated. The collection shows the ways in which economic and econometric analysis can be used to answer real-world problems rigorously in the area of international trade and trade policy. Readers will find that some of the research included is of current methodological relevance and some of more historical significance. This volume is invaluable to anyone who is keen on developing their knowledge on trade policy, regionalism or poverty — three pressing issues in today's globalized world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important essay dates from the end of the fifties. During this era, the dominant theories of economic growth were based on conditions of private ownership of capital and where investment is primarily under the control of private individuals or firms. Dobbs, however, considers the alternatives. He asks: Do such theories have a more universal application? Can they be applied to planned economies? If they can, in what form may such an application be made? Half a century later, with the global regime of unfettered international capital markets in a state of utter collapse, the time has come for a return to the possibility of rational social and economic planning. This short clear book is again a necessary theoretical starting point for a post-capitalist future.

Book excerpt: This dissertation revolves around two wider topics: social norms and production networks. The first chapter investigates a specific modern-day case study where social norms are leveraged in the fight against online hate speech to shed light on how norms shape political behavior more broadly. Using machine learning techniques, I show that speaking out against hateful views is an effective way of deterring further hate speech. The mechanism that most likely explains this effect is that vociferous contradiction in fact serves as a form of non-monetary punishment that raises the salience of a social norm. The second chapter focuses on the crucial role of image concerns in explaining the effect of social norms on behavior. While there are now plenty of studies showing that image concerns affect people on average, we still know very little about which individuals specifically drive that effect. I introduce a novel laboratory experiment designed to fill this gap. It generates an individual-specific measure of image concern, shows that there is substantial heterogeneity even in a small laboratory sample, and investigates how it correlates with other social preferences. The final chapter of my thesis focuses on production networks and in particular on vertical integration. Vertical integration give rise to anticompetitive behavior or indeed be a motive for it. I discuss one such mechanism, called vertical foreclosure, by which vertically integrating firms disrupt the supply of critical inputs to competitors. I leverage novel production network data to identify mergers and acquisitions between vertically related firms and show taht these mergers affect the supply chains of their rivals, which I interpret as evidence for foreclosure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This dissertation investigates the relation between investment-specific technical change and long-run economic growth. The first essay points out the discrepancy between the steady state growth theorem and recent economic growth driven by information technology. Previous study finds that investment-specific technological progress accounts for 58% of economic growth in the U.S. However, their result hinges on the assumption of the Cobb-Douglas production function. This paper employs the CES production function to investigate the effect of investment-specific technological progress on long-run economic growth. In the steady state, quality improvement in each vintage is directed to expand more functions in one machine, resulting in contraction in the types of capital. The offsetting effect between quality and variety implies that the relative capital income share is constant in the steady state. Empirical tests for the U.S. data show that investment-specific technological progress does not generate long-run economic growth. The elasticity of substitution is significantly less than one, and that there is an offsetting effect to investment-specific technological progress. The second essay investigates the quality changes in capital and labor inputs across 46 industries from 1968 to 2001. We incorporate a time-varying quality measure to the efficiency units of capital. The result indicates that the average quality of capital assets over time has improved 46 percent in the cross industry average. The quality improvement effect accounts for 30 percent in the total growth of the efficiency units of capital. Although the net quantity effect is still the largest component in the growth of the efficiency units of capital, there is significant substitution among different vintages and asset types as well. The average quality growth in the efficiency units of labor is 17 percent. The third essay investigates unbalanced growth facts and their implications for existing growth theory. We find that the balanced growth implication is consistent with data for the United States at the national aggregate level, but not at a more disaggregate level and internationally. Among the various unbalanced growth facts, the increases in the depreciation rates of equipment and of aggregate capital have the most significant impact on the growth theory. Under the Cobb-Douglas framework, an increasing depreciation rate of equipment can result in rising, constant, or declining rate of return of equipment, depending on the magnitude of the decreasing net marginal product effect and the capital loss effect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook explains comprehensively and in rigorous detail not only mainstream microeconomics, but also why many economists are dissatisfied with major aspects of it, and the alternative that they are exploring in response: the Classical-Keynesian-Kaleckian approach. This advanced yet user-friendly book allows readers to grasp the standard theory of consumers, firms, imperfect competition, general equilibrium, uncertainty, games and asymmetric information. Furthermore, it examines the classical approaches to value and income distribution advocated by Adam Smith, David Ricardo and Karl Marx, as well as Post-Keynesian pricing theory, and the microeconomics of variable capacity utilization. Using simple models, it highlights the analytical roots of the important differences between the marginal/neoclassical approach and the classical-Keynesian, critically examining the plausibility and reciprocal consistency of their assumptions. The book also addresses various microeconomic issues not generally included in advanced microeconomics textbooks, including differential land rent, joint-production long-period pricing, capital theory from Walras to the Cambridge debates, the foundations of aggregate production functions, the microeconomics of labor markets, and the long-period theory of wages. Lastly, it presents a unique re-evaluation of welfare economics. Intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate microeconomics courses, this textbook offers a comprehensive introduction to the various approaches and different schools of thought currently competing in the context of economic theory. It can also be used in courses on value and distribution, heterodox economics, and the history of economic analysis. In the present situation, characterized by scientific uncertainty and the co-existence of competing approaches, it will stimulate students to form their own opinion as to which approach appears more promising from a scientific standpoint.
