Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Book Critics Circle Award–winning author delivers a collection of essays that serve as the perfect “antidote to mansplaining” (The Stranger). In her comic, scathing essay “Men Explain Things to Me,” Rebecca Solnit took on what often goes wrong in conversations between men and women. She wrote about men who wrongly assume they know things and wrongly assume women don’t, about why this arises, and how this aspect of the gender wars works, airing some of her own hilariously awful encounters. She ends on a serious note— because the ultimate problem is the silencing of women who have something to say, including those saying things like, “He’s trying to kill me!” This book features that now-classic essay with six perfect complements, including an examination of the great feminist writer Virginia Woolf’s embrace of mystery, of not knowing, of doubt and ambiguity, a highly original inquiry into marriage equality, and a terrifying survey of the scope of contemporary violence against women. “In this series of personal but unsentimental essays, Solnit gives succinct shorthand to a familiar female experience that before had gone unarticulated, perhaps even unrecognized.” —The New York Times “Essential feminist reading.” —The New Republic “This slim book hums with power and wit.” —Boston Globe “Solnit tackles big themes of gender and power in these accessible essays. Honest and full of wit, this is an integral read that furthers the conversation on feminism and contemporary society.” —San Francisco Chronicle “Essential.” —Marketplace “Feminist, frequently funny, unflinchingly honest and often scathing in its conclusions.” —Salon

I make no complaint, because I find no fault; I express no wonder, for I feel none. The subject is, and must always remain, one of strange fascination. We have no author like the Dean of St. Patrick's. It has been said of Wordsworth that good-luck usually attended those who have written about him. The same thing may be said, with at least equal truth, about Swift. There are a great many books about him, and with few exceptions they are all interesting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men, Women, and Books, Vol. 1 of 2: A Selection of Sketches, Essays, and Critical Memoirs, From His Uncollected Prose Writings Should anything else in the impulsive portions of those essays, which were written when he was young, appear a little out of the pale of recognized manners, in point of style and animal spirits, the new reader will be good enough to understand, what old ones have long been aware of, and grown kind to, - namely, that the writer comes of a tropical race; and that what might have been afi'ectation in a colder blood, was only enthusiasm in a warm one. He is not con scious. However, of having suffered anything to re main, to which a reasonable critic could object. He has pruned a few passages, in order that he might not seem to take undue advantage of an extempore or anonymous allowance and in later years, particularly when seated on the critical bench, he has been pleased, and perhaps profited, in conforming himself to the customs of the court. But had he attempted to alter the general spirit of his writings, he would have belied the love of truth that is in him, and even shown himself ungrateful to public warrant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on Men and Things: A Series of Essays Formerly, as I have said, it was considered a pretty inno cent sort of thing to seem ignorant and helpless, and as of course I only pretended not to know what to do (at least in simple cases), I could still put on an interesting appearance of confusion, and yet be sufficiently cool and collected to turn up my eyes in a beseechingly piteous manner to the most eligible parti present, who would forthwith, in his anxiety to be of service, offer some utterly ridiculous and outrageous suggestion; but now I often become really con fused, and feel quite awkward, which is dreadful for a girl in society, you know, and what is worse, I receive no pity as I used to do. The gentlemen desert me to atter some good player who knows very well what she is about, and that puts me out of spirits, and then I lose half my animation, which is generally considered to be my strong point. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Morality of Woman: And Other Essays "The law condemns to be hung those who counterfeit banknotes; a measure necessary for the public welfare. But he who counterfeits love, that is to say: he who, for a thousand other reasons but not for love, unites himself to one whom he does not love and creates thus a family circle unworthy of that name - does not he indeed commit a crime whose extent and incalculable results in the present and in the future, disseminate far more terrible unhappiness than the counterfeiting of millions of banknotes!" C. J. L. Almquist. The simplest formula for the new conception of morality, which is beginning to be opposed to moral dogma still esteemed by all society, but especially by women, might be summed up in these words: Love is moral even without legal marriage, but marriage is immoral without love. If she likes the other woman she is cordial. But if she does not like her she is very, very cordial. A woman's aversion for another woman moving in the same social stratum in which she herself moves may readily be appraised. Invariably it is in inverse ratio to the apparent affection she displays upon encountering the object of her disfavor. Why should this be? I cannot answer. It is not given for us to know. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Poems In the first place, what is Woman? We will take our answer from Genesis ii, 23- "And Adam said. This is now bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man." The word itself is, I believe, of Anglo-Saxon origin, and means, literally, wife-man, or wife of man, thus woman should be man's help-meet, and although called the "weaker sex," she does, I doubt not, possess more power, exert a greater influence, and holds a more responsible position in the world than man. If the women of our day were more true in character, more earnest and upright in principle, and more alive to their responsibilities, we should not only have purer and more virtuous women, but nobler men, happier homes, and a more prosperous nation; for if woman is not the head, she is the neck, and turns the head as fancy or will directs; and if man holds the reins, as a rule she shows him which way to go. The song says that "Adam the very first woman obeyed," and that she will "manage it so that the very last man shall the very last woman obey." It is not intended that this paper should merely sound forth the praises of woman, being one myself, and knowing that we come far short of what we ought to be, but rather to implant in the heart of some woman, young or old, rich or poor, an earnest desire to be all that a true woman should be, for a "gracious woman retaineth honour," and "a virtuous woman is a crown to her husband." The "stronger sex" need to look out for something more than the bright eye, the rosy cheek and witty tongue; something that in years to come will make their homes bright and their future happy in time and safe for eternity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women and Men IN beginning a series of modest papers under this rather ambitious title, I am reminded that, compre hensive as it seems, the phrase is in one respect very recent. It is only within a century or-so that the two sexes have been habitually addressed together. The phrase women and men, or its more com mon form, ladies and gentlemen, or that other form, gentlemen and ladies, which the late Mr. Emerson habitually used, is a comparatively modern thing. Before the advent of Christianity we should not expect to find it used, and accordingly the great orations of ancient times were addressed to men only. Even after Christianity had brought a theo retic equality between the sexes the Jewish tradition still held strongly, and most of the fathers of the Church are, it must be owned, rather oppressively masculine. But among them there is one great. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
