From 1600 to the present day, entries cover psychology, pedagogy, sociology, anthropology, education, theology and political science, before these disciplines came to be considered distinct from philosophy. Clear and accessible, each entry contains a short biography of the writer, an exposition and analysis of his or her doctrines and ideas, a bibliography of writings and suggestions for further reading. Featuring a new preface by the editor and a comprehensive introduction, The Bloomsbury Encyclopedia to Philosophers in America includes 30 new entries on twenty-first century thinkers including Martha Nussbaum and Patricia Churchland. With in-depth overviews of Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, Noah Porter, Frederick Rauch, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson, this is an invaluable one-stop research volume to understanding leading figures in American thought and the development of American intellectual history.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1840, this was the first important statement on the preservation of peace through international mediation published in the United States. Anticipating the creation of the Permanent Court of International Justice and the League of Nations by a good 75 years, Ladd proposed an international "congress with legislative powers" that worked with a court that enforced its laws and settled international disputes. It became a central text for American peace organizations and participants in international law conferences, and did much to persuade Americans to accept the idea of an international peace organization. It was also distributed widely in Europe, where it was well-received. Ladd [1778-1841], a scholar and philanthropist, was the president of the American Peace Society. His essay was a contribution to a collection published by his society entitled Prize Essays on a Congress of Nations, For the Adjustment of International Disputes, And for the Promotion of Universal Peace Without Resort to Arms (1840).
Book Synopsis Dictionary of Early American Philosophers by : John R. Shook
Download or read book Dictionary of Early American Philosophers written by John R. Shook and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 1249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Early American Philosophers, which contains over 400 entries by nearly 300 authors, provides an account of philosophical thought in the United States and Canada between 1600 and 1860. The label of "philosopher" has been broadly applied in this Dictionary to intellectuals who have made philosophical contributions regardless of academic career or professional title. Most figures were not academic philosophers, as few such positions existed then, but they did work on philosophical issues and explored philosophical questions involved in such fields as pedagogy, rhetoric, the arts, history, politics, economics, sociology, psychology, medicine, anthropology, religion, metaphysics, and the natural sciences. Each entry begins with biographical and career information, and continues with a discussion of the subject's writings, teaching, and thought. A cross-referencing system refers the reader to other entries. The concluding bibliography lists significant publications by the subject, posthumous editions and collected works, and further reading about the subject.

Download or read book Professors and Public Ethics written by Wilson Smith and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A relatively unexplored subject in the social and intellectual history of our country is the contribution made by the moral philosophers, the social scientists of their day. What was their place in the academic and practical world? What was the nature of their social ethics? Did they have a real voice in public affairs? What brought about the decline of their influence? These questions are dealt with in Professors and Public Ethics. In particular, Professor Smith discusses the beliefs and careers of some of the leading moral philosophers—William Paley, John Daniel Gros, Francis Lieber, Charles B. Haddock, Francis Wayland, James Walker, and others. Their writings and their views upon moral questions and the moral aspects of leading questions of their time are presented; among the problems dealt with are abolition of slavery, state rights, the Mexican War, Know-Nothing politics, agriculture and farm problems, the tariff, free trade, savings banks, recessions and booms, repudiation of state debts, and prison reform. Historians, as well as present-day social scientists and church leaders, should find Professors and Public Ethics a sound, thoughtful, and valuable contribution to our knowledge about the mid-nineteenth century.
