"She deserves to die" are the chilling words whispered in the dark that compel a young dancer to discover who haunts her studio---and why. New to Chicago, 15-year-old Libby Nobleton stands outside the city's premier studio, L'Esprit. Having studied French in school, she fluently pronounces the word "le spree" and knows it means "the spirit." While innocently pursuing her passion, unearthly events torment Libby. Lights flicker, eerie shadows glide, and the open door of the abandoned elevator menacingly beckons. Libby struggles between her love for her new studio and the fear that someone or something might be out to get her. When a legendary statue resembling her ballet idol mysteriously appears, it opens a portal to the past exposing Libby to L'Esprit's timeless love story and turbulent past. At last, relying on faith and courage, Libby witnesses the shocking yet inspirational truth about L'Esprit's most tragic night, but who will believe her? The Legend of L'Esprit is a novel of paranormal, romance, and mystery and is appropriate for tweens, teens, and dance lovers of any age. The book includes an educational ballet glossary and each chapter begins with a dance term and definition that subtly relates to the adventure about to unfold. Book excerpt: The fourteenth-century Greek hesychast and controversialist, Gregory Palamas, has been so successfully cast as 'the other' in Western theological discourse that it can be difficult to gain a sympathetic hearing for him. In the first part of this book, Norman Russell traces the historical reception of Palamite thought in Orthodoxy and in the West, and investigates how 'Palamism' was constructed in the early twentieth century by both Western and Eastern theologians (principally Martin Jugie and John Meyendorff) for polemical or apologetic purposes. Russell argues that we need to go behind these ideological constructions in order to gain a true perception of the teaching of Gregory Palamas. In his recent survey of Palamite scholarship, Robert Sinkewicz noted that it is now time to raise the larger questions. The second part of the book attempts to do this, following the contours of Palamas' thinking in three areas: his relationship to tradition, his philosophy, and his theology. Russell shows that Palamite thought, when freed of misunderstanding and misrepresentation, has the potential to enrich our understanding of divine-human communion. This study contributes to the changing paradigm of scholarship on Palamas, nudging it towards the point at which Palamite thought can be used fruitfully by contemporary Western and Eastern theologians without the need to subscribe to what has been regarded as 'Palamism'.

A software system is the result of putting together knowledge about the application, the requirements and the structures of computing science. Under the heading CIP (Computer-aided Intuition-guided Programming), a group of researchers led by Prof. F.L. Bauer and Prof. K. Samelson started work in 1975 in the direction of formal program specification, transformational programming, and tool supportfor program development. The collection of papers in this volume presents examples of a formal approach to programming language concepts and program development based on algebraic specifications and program transformations. Examples are also presented of evolutions and modificationsof the original ideas of the CIP project. The topics range from descriptionsof the program development process to derivations of algorithms from specifications. The volume is dedicated to Prof. F.L. Bauer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1980s, a trend towards formal undeIStanding and knowledge-based assistance for the development and maintenance of database-intensive information systems became apparent. The group of John Mylopoulos at the UniveISity of Toronto and their European collaboratoIS moved from semantic models of information systems design (Taxis project) towards earlier stages of the software lifecycle. Joachim Schmidt's group at the University of Hamburg completed their early work on the design and implementation of database programming languages (Pascal/R) and began to consider tools for the development of large database program packages. The Belgian company BIM developed a fast commercial Prolog which turned out to be useful as an implementation language for object oriented knowledge representation schemes and as a prototyping tool for formal design models. Case studies by Vasant Dhar and Matthias Jarke in New York pointed out the need for formally representing process knowledge, and a number of projects in the US and Europe began to consider computer assistance (CASE) as a viable approach to support software engineering. In 1985, the time appeared ripe for an attempt at integrating these experiences in a comprehensive CASE framework relating all phases of an information systems lifecycle. The Commission of the European Communities decided in early 1986 to fund this joint effort by six European software houses and research institutions in the Software Technology section of the ESPRIT I program. The project was given the number 892 and the title DAIDA - Development Assistance for Intelligent Database Applications.

Book excerpt: The goal of enterprise integration is the development of computer-based tools that facilitate coordination of work and information flow across organizational boundaries. These proceedings, the first on EI modeling technologies, provide a synthesis of the technical issues involved; describe the various approaches and where they overlap, complement, or conflict with each other; and identify problems and gaps in the current technologies that point to new research. The leading edge of a movement that began with computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM), EI now seeks to engage the development of computer-based tools to control not only manufacturing but the allied areas of materials supply, accounting, and inventory control. EI technology is pushing forward research in areas such as distributed AI, concurrent engineering, task coordination, human-computer interaction, and distributed planning and scheduling. These proceedings provide the first common technical ground for comparing, evaluating, or coordinating these efforts.Charles J. Petrie, Jr., is Senior Member of Technical Staff at MCC in Austin, Texas.Topics include: Computer Integrated Manufacturing. Open System Architecture Standards. The results of five workshops on EI modeling topics: Model Integration, Model/Application Namespace, Heterogeneous Execution Environments, Metrics and Methodologies, and Coordination Process Models.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an original and sophisticated historical interpretation of contemporary French political culture. Until now, there have been few attempts to understand the political consequences of the profound geopolitical, intellectual and economic changes that France has undergone since the 1970s. However, Emile Chabal's detailed study shows how passionate debates over citizenship, immigration, colonial memory, the reform of the state and the historiography of modern France have galvanised the French elite and created new spaces for discussion and disagreement. Many of these debates have coalesced around two political languages - republicanism and liberalism - both of which structure the historical imagination and the symbolic vocabulary of French political actors. The tension between these two political languages has become the central battleground of contemporary French politics. It is around these two poles that politicians, intellectuals and members of France's vast civil society have tried to negotiate the formidable challenges of ideological uncertainty and a renewed sense of global insecurity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge acquisition has become a major area of artificial intelligence and cognitive science research. The papers in this book show that the area of knowledge acquisition for knowledge-based systems is still a diverse field in which a large number of research topics are being addressed. However, several main themes run through the papers. First, the issues of integrating knowledge from different sources and K.A. tools is a salient topic in many papers. A second major topic in the papers is that of knowledge modelling. Research in knowledge-based systems emphasises the use of generic models of reasoning and its underlying knowledge. An important trend in the area of knowledge modelling aims at the formalisation of knowledge models. Where the field of knowledge acquisition was without tools and techniques years ago, now there is a rapidly growing body of techniques and tools. Apart from the integrated workbenches already mentioned above, several papers in this book present new tools. Although knowledge acquisition and machine learning have been considered as separate subfields of AI, there is a tendency for the two fields to come together. This publication combines machine learning techniques with more conventional knowledge elicitation techniques. A framework is presented in which reasoning, problem solving and learning together form a knowledge intensive system that can acquire knowledge from its own experience.

It was held in Brighton, April 8-12, 1991, and was organized by the Department of Computing, Imperial College, London. The proceedings of TAPSOFT '91 are organized into three parts: - Advances in Distributed Computing (ADC) - Colloquium on Trees in Algebra and Programming (CAAP) - Colloquium on Combining Paradigms for Software Development (CCPSD) The proceedings are published in two volumes. The first volume (LNCS, Vol. 493) contains the papers from CAAP. The second volume (LNCS, Vol. 494) contains the papers from the ADC and CCPSD. The ADC talks by distinguished invited speakers surveys current developments in distributed computing, including the integration of different paradigms for concurrency, algebraic, logical and operational foundations, and applications to software engineering and formal methods. The CCPSD papers address aspects of the trend in software enginering towards unification and synthesis combining theory and practice, and merging hitherto diverse approaches.
