Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After an introductory chapter concerning the definition of 'Straits used for international navigation', the author examines in detail the evolution of the question in the years prior to the convening of UNCLOS-III, during the preparatory works of the Sea-Bed Committee & throughout the Conference. The second part of the book studies the legal norms set up by the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea concerning the regime of transit passage for maritime & air navigation applicable in most of the straits used for international navigation & the regime of innocent passage residually applied in the other straits. In the final chapter, the author makes a critical appraisal of the new regimes of navigation & overflight in straits, exposes the implications of such regimes in Spain, analyzes the applicability of the Convention's regulations before their coming into force, & examines the practice followed in the last few years by the most important States which favoured or opposed the regime of transit passage. From his position as Deputy-Head of the Spanish Delegation to the Law of the Sea Conference, Ambassador de Yturriaga participated from the very beginning in the work of UNCLOS-III & was an active protagonist in the debates of the straits' question. The book offers a first hand testimony of the straits' negotiation, which will be extremely useful for scholars & students of the Law of the Sea.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The account in this volume begins with Admiral of the Fleet Sir Andrew Cunningham’s assumption of the First Sea Lordship on 5 October 1943, and concludes with the formal surrender of Japan on 2 September 1945. This volume is entitled Anglo-American-Canadian Naval Relations, 1943-1945, for the very good reason that, by the end of the war, the Royal Canadian Navy was the third largest in the world, after its two great partners, and Canadian naval and air forces played a major role in anti-submarine warfare in the Atlantic, and rendered important service also in other theatres. The period covered by this volume was the time in which victory was forged and the three major Allies enjoyed an almost unbroken series of maritime triumphs. In Part I, the relationships of the senior commanders, their services and their countries are discussed. Part II deals with the last stage of the fight against the U-boats, a war which by 1943 had spread to most of the world’s seas. Part III deals with the Western Allies’ eventual return to North West Europe. In Part IV, the final operations in the Mediterranean, including the landings in Southern France and at Anzio in Italy, are covered. Part V recounts the participation of the British Pacific Fleet in the concluding operations against Japan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honorable Mention, North American Society for Oceanic History John Lyman Book Award in the Naval and Maritime Science and Technology Category In 1559, Spanish explorer Tristan de Luna led a fleet of ships from Mexico to Pensacola Bay, Florida. His objective was to settle the Florida frontier for the Kingdom of Spain. But a hurricane struck soon after his arrival, destroying the small colony and sinking six of his ships. Few significant remains were uncovered for more than 400 years—until a ship was found underwater off Emanuel Point in modern-day Pensacola. Florida’s Lost Galleon documents this groundbreaking discovery, the earliest shipwreck found in Florida. Underwater archaeologists describe how they explored the ship’s hull and recorded it carefully in order to reconstruct the original vessel and its last mission. They take readers into the laboratory, where they explain how the waterlogged objects they uncovered were analyzed and prepared for public display. The story of the ill-fated colony unfolds as they discuss the surprisingly well-preserved Spanish colonial artifacts, including armor, ammunition, plant and animal remains, and wooden and metal tools. The excavation of the Emanuel Point shipwreck was driven by the enthusiasm and support of local volunteers, and this volume argues for the importance of such public archaeology projects. Florida's Lost Galleon invites readers to experience the exciting world of marine archaeology as it opens up a forgotten chapter in American history. Contributors: Elizabeth D. Benchley | John R. Bratten | Gregory Cook | Joseph Cozzi | Della Scott-Ireton | KC Smith | Roger C. Smith | James D. Spirek | John E. Worth
