VALKIRIE tells the story of contemporary Mexico ́s history, specially through the last twelve years dominated by an erratic and strange drug war against the cartels and its connections with important politicians, business men and global corporations. Vivian walks inside a purple cloud after Mexico ceased to exist, walking among mexicans who doesn ́t know they are already dead. Its a novel composed in chapters that represent heads, hands, legs and hearts dismembered. VALKIRIE may be a fiction but its well documented in reality. As Vivian, one of its characters, says, "it ́s written by the voices unheard, by the lost ones, the dissapeared: the testimony of the dead that still walk around us". VALKIRIE its a trip, a trance, a dark tour de force inside the mind of a girl induced by a new and powerful illegal drug in a plot that has to do with the attempt to kill the president...or two.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This thoughtfully crafted . . . insightful and informative [anthology] elucidates an overlooked, essential component of the Latin American literary canon” (Choice). Latin American Women Dramatists sheds much-needed light on the significant contributions made by these pioneering authors during the last half of the twentieth century. Contributors discuss fifteen works of Latin-American playwrights, delineate the artistic lives of women dramatists from countries as diverse as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. Looking at these writers and their work from political, historical, and feminist perspectives, this anthology also underscores the problems inherent in writing under repressive governments. “The book highlights the many possibilities of the innovative work of these dramatists, and this will, it is to be hoped, help the editors to achieve one of their other key goals: productions of the plays in English.” —Times Literary Supplement, UK

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ethnography of the Ecuadorian Amazon that demonstrates the need for a relational, place-based, contingent understanding of harm and toxicity. Reckoning with Harm is a striking ethnographic analysis of the harm resulting from oil extraction. Covering fifty years of settler colonization and industrial transformation of the Ecuadorian Amazon, Amelia Fiske interrogates the relations of harm. She moves between forest-courtrooms and oily waste pits, farms and toxic tours, to explore both the ways in which harm from oil is entangled with daily life and the tensions surrounding efforts to verify and redress it in practice. Attempts to address harm from the oil industry in Ecuador have been consistently confounded by narrow, technocratic understandings of evidence, toxicity, and responsibility. Building on collaborators’ work to contest state and oil company insistence that harm is controlled and principally chemical in nature, Fiske shows that it is necessary to refigure harm as relational in order to reckon with unremediated contamination of the past while pushing for broad forms of accountability in the present. She theorizes that harm is both a relationship and an animating feature of relationships in this place, a contingent understanding that is needed to contemplate what comes next when living in a toxic world.

However, scholarship remains pending on women's contributions to Spanish national agendas. This book addresses the visions of history, culture, and national identity articulated by Rosario de Acuna (1851-1923), angela Figuera (1902-1984), and Rosa Chacel (1898-1994). Their works elucidate the contested formation of Spanish democracy and the gendered politics of culture. Types of liberalism in late nineteenth-century Spain are debated in Acuna's theater and essays in part 1. Figuera's poetry, the focus of part 2, highlights the notion of history as trauma resulting from the Spanish Civil War and Franco dictatorship, to privilege the recovery of historical memory. Part 3 explores Chacel's re-invention, in Barrio de Maravillas and Acropolis, of the liberal cultures of early twentieth-century Spain, from within a post-Franco era eager to reclaim those histories. The conclusion addresses the relevance of the writers' projects for present-day Spain. Christine Arkinstall is Associate Professor in Spanish at The University of Auckland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 25 November 1975, representatives of five South American intelligence services held a secret meeting in the city of Santiago, Chile. At the end of the gathering, the participating delegations agreed to launch Operation Condor under the pretext of coordinating counterinsurgency activities, sharing information to combat leftist guerrillas and stopping an alleged advance of Marxism in the region. Condor, however, went much further than mere exchanges of information between neighbours. It was a plan to transnationalize state terrorism beyond South America. This book identifies the reasons why the South American military regimes chose this strategic path at a time when most revolutionary movements in the region were defeated, in the process of leaving behind armed struggle and resuming the political path. One of Condor’s most intriguing features was the level of cooperation achieved by these governments considering the distrust, animosity and historical rivalries between these countries’ armed forces. This book explores these differences and goes further than previous lines of inquiry, which have focused predominantly on the conflict between Latin American leftist guerrillas and the armed forces, to study the contribution made by other actors such as civilian anticommunist figures and organizations, and the activities conducted by politically active exiles and their supporters in numerous countries. This broader approach confirms that the South American dictatorships launched the Condor Plan to systematically eliminate any kind of opposition, especially key figures and groups involved in the denunciation of the regimes’ human rights violations.

Book excerpt: The intention is to provide the stigma of Leo Brouwer's creation and confirm his status as a guitarist and composer in the artistic sphere; namely, that of an artist with an intense enquiring mind, while at the same time showcasing his music and the connotations that are occasionally dominant in his work. At the same time, the main intention is to shed light on the process of organizing the sound and motivic material in his music, something that can be achieved by analysing two of his most representative pieces - each pertaining to a different compositional period.

Vatos locos, romancing abuelos, border crossers and border smugglers, drug kingpins, Latina motorbike riders, philosophically musing tweens, and so much more. The stories in this dynamic bilingual prose-art collection touch on the universals of romance, family, migration and expulsion, and everyday life in all its zany configurations. In a world filled with racism, police brutality, poverty, and tensions between haves and have-nots, these flashes of fictional insight bring gleaming clarity to life lived where all sorts of borders meet and shift. Frederick Luis Aldama and graphic artists from Mapache Studios give shape to ugly truths in the most honest way, creating new perceptions, thoughts, and feelings about life in the borderlands of the Américas. Each bilingual prose-art fictional snapshot offers an unsentimentally complex glimpse into what it means to exist at the margins of society today. These unflinching and often brutal fictions crisscross spiritual, emotional, and physical borders as they give voice to all those whom society chooses not to see.
