Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Ecuadorian short story collection explores domestic horrors and everyday violence, a "grotesque, unflinching" portrait of twenty-first-century Latin America (Publishers Weekly). “Ampuero’s literary voice is tough and beautiful at once: her stories are exquisite and dangerous objects.” —Yuri Herrera, author of Signs Preceding the End of the World Named one of the ten best fiction books of 2018 by the New York Times en Español, Cockfight is the debut work by Ecuadorian writer and journalist María Fernanda Ampuero. In lucid and compelling prose, Ampuero sheds light on the hidden aspects of the home: the grotesque realities of family, coming of age, religion, and class struggle. A family’s maids witness a horrible cycle of abuse, a girl is auctioned off by a gang of criminals, and two sisters find themselves at the mercy of their spiteful brother. With violence masquerading as love, characters spend their lives trapped reenacting their past traumas. Heralding a brutal and singular new voice, Cockfight explores the power of the home to both create and destroy those within it.

Book excerpt: Something has come to the San Fernando Valley ... something horrible. But this horror is not confined to only the dark hours. It walks in daylight with impunity, grinning, smirking. This horror can not be stopped with a crucifix; it wears one ... a very unusual one. It has no heart, so a wooden stake is useless. It has many names, many faces, has always been and will never die. It was born of evil and is nurtured by ignorance. It can enter your life at any time ... if it hasn't already. In its wake it leaves only death and despair. It soils everything it touches. This horror is very, very real.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a sleepy, secluded Alaska town called Barrow, the sun sets and doesn't rise for more than thirty consecutive days and nights from November to December. During this time a few years ago, from the darkness and across the frozen wasteland, an evil that normally preferred to exist in the shadows descended upon Barrow and brought the residents to their knees. Barrow's only hope was Eben and Stella Olemaun, a husband-and-wife law enforcement team who were torn between their own survival and saving the town they loved. Months later, as Stella Olemaun attempts to warn the world about the looming vampire threat by any means necessary, a rogue government agent may be taking more than an active interest in her story. And meanwhile, further north, a new sheriff and his young son must solve the lingering mystery of Barrow, even as the survivors of the original attack prepare for the sun to set once again -- however this time, they're ready. 30 Days Of Night: Rumors Of The Undead is Steve Niles's innovative and eagerly anticipated expansion of a nightmarish narrative that explores the nature of ancient evil existing -- and thriving -- in an unsuspecting modern world.
Book Synopsis Natural Histories by : Guadalupe Nettel
Download or read book Natural Histories written by Guadalupe Nettel and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2014-06-10 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siamese fighting fish, cockroaches, cats, a snake, and a strange fungus all serve here as mirrors that reflect the unconfessable aspects of human nature buried within us. The traits and fates of these animals illuminate such deeply natural, human experiences as the cruelty born of cohabitation, the desire to reproduce and the impulse not to, and the inexplicable connection that can bind, eerily, two beings together. Each Nettel tale creates, with tightly wound narrative tension, a space wherein her characters feel excruciatingly human, exploring how the wounds we incur in life manifest themselves within us, clandestinely, irrevocably, both unseen and overtly. In a precise writing style that is both subtle and spellbinding, Nettel renders the ordinary unsettling, and the grotesque exquisite. Natural Histories is the winner of the 3rd Ribera del Duero International Award for Short Narratives, an important Spanish literature prize.

Download or read book Crossfire written by Roberta Johnson and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marriage of philosophy and fiction in the first third of Spain's twentieth century was a fertile one. It produced some truly notable offspring -- novels that cross genre boundaries to find innovative forms, and treatises that fuse literature and philosophy in new ways. In her illuminating interdisciplinary study of Spanish fiction of the "Silver Age," Roberta Johnson places this important body of Spanish literature in context through a synthesis of social, literary, and philosophical history. Her examination of the work of Miguel de Unamuno, Pio Baroja, Azorin, Ramon Perez de Ayala, Juan Ramon Jimenez, Gabriel Miro, Pedro Salinas, Rosa Chacel, and Benjamin Jarnes brings to light philosophical frictions and debates and opens new interpersonal and intertextual perspectives on many of the period's most canonical novels. Johnson reformulates the traditional discussion of generations and "isms" by viewing the period as an intergenerational complex in which writers with similar philosophical and personal interests constituted dynamic groupings that interacted and constantly defined and redefined one another. Current narratological theories, including those of Todorov, Genette, Bakhtin, and Martinez Bonati, assist in teasing out the intertextual maneuvers and philosophical conflicts embedded in the novels of the period, while the sociological and biographical material bridges the philosophical and literary analyses. The result, solidly grounded in original archival research, is a convincingly complete picture of Spain's intellectual world in the first thirty years of this century. Crossfire should revolutionize thinking about the Generation of '98 and the Generation of '14 by identifying the heterogeneous philosophical sources of each and the writers' reactions to them in fiction.

Book Synopsis The Goldsmith's Secret by : Elia Barcelo
Download or read book The Goldsmith's Secret written by Elia Barcelo and published by MacLehose Press. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One snowy night in New York City, a successful but solitary goldsmith reflects on his life, and his unreliable memories intertwine and collide. Returning to the village where he grew up, he hopes with some trepidation that he will encounter Celia, "the Black Widow," a beautiful and mysterious friend of his mother with whom he had a short and passionate affair when he was a teenager, before she rejected him. But instead he meets a young woman who opens doors onto a strange world, and takes him back in time. The Goldsmith's Secret is a remarkable story with a magical twist, of a love trapped between two parallel times, set Spain in the fifties, seventies, and in the last year of the twentieth century. In beautifully economical language, and with a structure as intricate and refined as a bevelled jewel, The Goldsmith's Secret is filled with intense nostalgia, memories and desires. Elia Barcelo has come to be known across Europe as a truly original voice, and her books as poetic works of great subtlety.
Download or read book In Real Life written by Leticia Sala and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Real Life: An Online Love Story is the first of its kind—a bilingual novel-in-poetry written by popular Spanish-language poet Leticia Sala. In Real Life is not only about a young Barcelona woman who finds romance online thousands of miles away in New York City, it is also an ode to the titanic effort required in staying loyal to a commitment and her own individuality in the silicon age. Told in a poetic key, the fate of this couple, whose relationship begins with love at first like, offers a fractured mosaic of essential moments crowded with insecurities and urban neuroses, both contemporary and universal. The characters in the work of Leticia Sala seek light in the chaos churned out by modern culture and are always treated by the author with compassion, regard, and respect for their unfolding desires. In Real Life captures our infatuation with technology and finding new ways of relating to one another, our fascination with travel and language, and our age-old obsession with that right to love and feel loved.
