Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Eskimo Medicine Man" is a record of primitive Alaskan life in the 1930's. It records the experiences in Alaska's remote areas of Dr. Otto George, the last "traveling physician" for the Department of Interior's Indian Service, when in all the territory (an area one-fifth that of the contiguous United States) there were fewer than sixty thousand persons. This book deals with the Eskimos of the Bering Sea, along the coast of the Artic Ocean, the areas of the Kuskokwim rivershed, and of the lower Yukon. The notes from Dr. George's eight diaries furnish the materials for this volume, documenting the time, the peoples and their ancient way of life. The photographs used to illustrate the book are those taken by Dr. George and developed by him, often with water from the silt-laden Kuskokwim River or melted snow. Some of the incidents Dr. George relates concern the difficulties of traveling to, from, or over Alaska; of finding groceries, even at great cost; and of dealing with the natives' superstitious acceptance of tuberculosis. Dr. George details his fight against that disease and includes his impressions and thoughts during a stay along the Bering Sea with villagers who were free of tuberculosis because they still practiced the ancient ways of building new winter homes each fall, letting spring floods wipe out dirt and germs. Book excerpt: This volume is at once an introduction to anthropology, an account of a personal odyssey, and a call for action. Acknowledged as one of anthropology's most brilliant practitioners, Robin Fox shows in a series of linked essays on such topics as race, evolution, sex, marriage, language, and witchcraft, and the range, potential, and inheritent weaknesses of anthropology as a science. The author offers a view of the human side of anthropology, as well as its ruthlessly professional side--a side he characterizes as so obsessed with field work and obsolete ideology that it is failing its task of exploring human nature.

This book was released on 1982-12-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the only comprehensive bibliography of Canadian folklore in English. The 3877 different items are arranged by genres: folktales; folk music and dance; folk speech and naming; superstitions, popular beliefs, folk medicine, and the supernatural; folk life and customs; folk art and material culture; and within genres by ethnic groups: Anglophone and Celtic, Francophone, Indian and Inuit, and other cultural groups. The items include reference books, periodicals, articles, records, films, biographies of scholars and informants, and graduate theses. Each items is annotated through a coding that indicates whether it is academic or popular, its importance to the scholar, and whether it is suitable for young people. The introduction includes a brief survey of Canadian folklore studies, putting this work into academic and social perspective. The book covers all the important items and most minor items dealing with Canadian folklore published in English up to the end of 1979. It is concerned with legitimate Canadian folklore – whether transplanted from other countries and preserved here, or created here to reflect the culture of this country. It distinguishes between authentic folklore presented as collected and popular treatments in which the material has been rewritten by the authors. Intended primarily for scholars of folklore, international as well as Canadian, the book will also be of use to scholars in anthropology, cultural geography, oral history, and other branches of Canadian culture studies, as well as to librarians, teachers, and the general public.

Book excerpt: "Reading this poignant volume again emphasizes to me how crucial it is to keep exploitation out of this extraordinary part of our planet, so that it can serve as a lasting beacon for America's wilderness."--Edgar Wayburn, M.D., five-time president of the Sierra Club and author of Your Land and Mine PRAISE FOR THE SECOND EDITION: "A book for every man and woman who loves the wilderness. One who reads this volume walks with Bob Marshall on treacherous trails, climbs with him to the top of unnamed mountains, struggles with him to escape the swift rise of dangerous rivers, faces grizzly bears unarmed, feels the joy of being alone in an empty wilderness, and sees through the poet's eyes the great glories of the Alaskan mountains."--William O. Douglas
