Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As well as outlining the shape of Welsh religious history generally, this volume describes the development of Calvinistic Methodist thought up to and beyond the secession from the Established Church in 1811, and the way in which the Evangelical Revival impacted the Older Dissent to create a vibrant popular Nonconformity. Along with analysing aspects of theology and doctrine, the narrative assesses the contribution of such key personalities as William Williams Pantycelyn, Thomas Charles of Bala andThomas Jones of Denbigh, and the Nonconformists Titus Lewis, Joseph Harris ‘Gomer’, George Lewis, David Rees and Gwilym Hiraethog. Following the notorious ‘Treachery of the Blue Books’ of 1847 and the Religious Census of 1851, Anglicanism regained ground, and among the themes treated in the latter chapters are the influence of High Church Tractarianism and the Broad Church ‘Lampeter Theology’ in the parishes. The volume concludes by assessing the intellectual culture of evangelicalism personified by Lewis Edwards and Thomas Charles Edwards, and describes the challenges of Darwinism, philosophical Idealism and a more critical attitude to the biblical text.
Book Synopsis Medieval Welsh Pilgrimage, c.1100–1500 by : Kathryn Hurlock
Download or read book Medieval Welsh Pilgrimage, c.1100–1500 written by Kathryn Hurlock and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-12 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval Welsh Pilgrimage, c.1100–1500 examines one of the most popular expressions of religious belief in medieval Europe—from the promotion of particular sites for political, religious, and financial reasons to the experience of pilgrims and their impact on the Welsh landscape. Addressing a major gap in Welsh Studies, Kathryn Hurlock peels back the historical and religious layers of these holy pilgrimage sites to explore what motivated pilgrims to visit these particular sites, how family and locality drove the development of certain destinations, what pilgrims expected from their experience, how they engaged with pilgrimage in person or virtually, and what they saw, smelled, heard, and did when they reached their ultimate goal.
Book Synopsis The Visual Culture of Baptism in the Middle Ages by : HarrietM.Sonnede Torrens

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the guidance of the leading experts on baptismal fonts and the co-directors of the Baptisteria Sacra Index, the world?s only iconographical inventory of baptismal fonts, a research project at the University of Toronto, this collection of essays by a group of European and North American scholars extends the traditional boundaries associated with the study of baptismal fonts. The ?visual? is privileged, whether it is in the metaphysical, literary or empirical realms of scholarship, offering a rich understanding of the powerful role of baptism played in medieval and renaissance society. In the quest for a holistic understanding of the vessels, the settings and contexts, the rituals and the spiritual significance of the font, itself, the contributors have turned to a range of sources, folkloric tales, baptismal records, liturgical sermons, civic records, literary accounts, hagiographies and historical documents about local families, communities and ecclesiastical developments. Previous scholarship about baptismal fonts has often focused on the purely stylistic, iconographical and liturgical perspectives, using primarily ecclesiastical and liturgical documentation. This collection of essays shows the wealth of new information that baptismal fonts can offer when scholars adopt interdisciplinary approaches and engage in readings that question traditional assumptions inherited in scholarship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Movement began in the Church of England in 1833 and extended to the rest of the Anglican Communion, influencing other denominations as well. It was an attempt to remind the church of its divine authority, independent of the state, and to recall it to its Catholic heritage deriving from the ancient and medieval periods, as well as the Caroline Divines of 17th-century England. The Oxford Movement and Its Leaders is a comprehensive bibliography of books, pamphlets, chapters in books, periodical articles, manuscripts, microforms, and tape recordings dealing with the Movement and its influence on art, literature, and music, as well as theology; authors include scholars in these fields, as well as the fields of history, political science, and the natural sciences. The first edition of The Oxford Movement and Its Leaders and its supplement contained comprehensive coverage through 1983 and 1990, respectively. The Second Edition, with over 8,000 citations covering many languages, extends coverage through 2001; it also includes many earlier items not previously listed, corrections and additions to earlier items, and a listing of electronic sources.
