Book excerpt: This book focuses on a selection of special topics, with emphasis on past and present research of the authors on “canonical” Riemannian metrics on smooth manifolds. On the backdrop of the fundamental contributions given by many experts in the field, the volume offers a self-contained view of the wide class of “Curvature Conditions” and “Critical Metrics” of suitable Riemannian functionals. The authors describe the classical examples and the relevant generalizations. This monograph is the winner of the 2020 Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize, a prestigious award for books of expository nature presenting the latest developments in an active area of research in mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to provide solid bases for the study of physics for the university and it is divided into four parts, each dedicated to a fundamental branch of physics: quantum mechanics, theoretical physics, particle physics and condensed matter physics. In the first part we start with the concept of wave function, until the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. In the second part, after recalling the basic concepts of relativity, we treat the elementary particles and the hadrons, arriving to the notions of scattering and cross section. The third part is dedicated to the theoretical physics, where we analyze the field theory and the concepts of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian, introducing the quantum electrodynamics (QED), passing through the Klein-Gordon, Dirac and Maxwell fields. In the last part of the book we expose the basics of the condensed matter physics, including diffusion and Brownian motion, Drude and Sommerfeld models, the calculation of specific heat and the principal mechanical properties of solids, with references to lattice defects and semiconductors.

Book excerpt: This book re-presents the poetry of Rudyard Kipling in the form of bold slogans, the better for us to reappraise the meaning and import of his words and his art. Each line or phrase is thrust at the reader in a manner that may be inspirational or controversial... it is for the modern consumer of this recontextualization to decide. They are words to provoke: to action. To inspire. To recite. To revile. To reconcile or reconsider the legacy and benefits of colonialism. Compiled and presented by sloganist Dick Robinson, three poems are included, complete and uncut: 'White Man's Burden', 'Fuzzy-Wuzzy' and 'If'.

Book excerpt: This collection of fifteen short stories by Irish author James Joyce examines how one's surroundings can shape and influence a person. Although initially considered too edgy for publication, Dubliners later became a classic as readers began to appreciate Joyce's realistic fiction. In each story, Joyce documents the daily lives and hardships of fictional Dublin citizens. Joyce's collection progresses from the struggles of childhood to the struggles of adulthood. This collection includes one of Joyce's most famous short stories, "The Dead," which depicts the ways memories of the past can intrude upon the present. Joyce provides a glimpse into twentieth-century Irish culture and history in this unabridged short story collection, first published in 1914.

Book excerpt: "The Dead is one of the twentieth century's most beautiful pieces of short literature. Taking his inspiration from a family gathering held every year on the Feast of the Epiphany, Joyce pens a story about a married couple attending a Christmas-season party at the house of the husband's two elderly aunts. A shocking confession made by the husband's wife toward the end of the story showcases the power of Joyce's greatest innovation: the epiphany, that moment when everything, for character and reader alike, is suddenly clear.

Book excerpt: This volume addresses the key issue of the initial education and lifelong professional learning of teachers of mathematics to enable them to realize the affordances of educational technology for mathematics. With invited contributions from leading scholars in the field, this volume contains a blend of research articles and descriptive texts. In the opening chapter John Mason invites the reader to engage in a number of mathematics tasks that highlight important features of technology-mediated mathematical activity. This is followed by three main sections: An overview of current practices in teachers’ use of digital technologies in the classroom and explorations of the possibilities for developing more effective practices drawing on a range of research perspectives (including grounded theory, enactivism and Valsiner’s zone theory). A set of chapters that share many common constructs (such as instrumental orchestration, instrumental distance and double instrumental genesis) and research settings that have emerged from the French research community, but have also been taken up by other colleagues. Meta-level considerations of research in the domain by contrasting different approaches and proposing connecting or uniting elements

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main aim of this book is to show the features of DiQuMASPAB so ware through the description of its graphical interface, by giving special emphasis to all those aspects implemented in the code. DiQuMASPAB, acronym of “Differential Quadrature for Mechanics of Anisotropic Shells, Plates, Arches and Beams”, is a computational code, which can be used for the numerical analysis of doubly curved shells made of innovative materials, using the Generalized Differential Quadrature (GDQ) and the Generalized Integral Quadrature (GIQ) methods. The software can investigate the mechanical behavior of these structures through different approaches and structural theories. In particular, this code allows considering a kinematic expansion characterized by different degrees of freedom for the Equivalent Single Layer (ESL) theories and for each layer when the Layer-Wise (LW) approach is taken into account. As far as the materials are concerned, it is possible to consider different lamination schemes, as well as various distributions of the volume fraction of the constituents for those layers that vary their mechanical properties along the thickness. In addition, the software analyzes structures with variable thickness and characterized by variable mechanical properties that can change point by point. A finite element formulation is also available to investigate the mechanical behavior of plane structures characterized by irregular domains and mechanical discontinuities.

Book excerpt: English for Psychology in Higher Education Studies The Garnet Education English for Specific Academic Purposes series won the Duke of Edinburgh English Speaking Union English Language Book Award in 2009. English for Psychology is a skills-based course designed specifically for students of psychology who are about to enter English-medium tertiary level studies. It provides carefully graded practice and progression in the key academic skills that all students need, such as listening to lectures and speaking in seminars. It also equips students with the specialist language they need to participate successfully within a psychology faculty. Extensive listening exercises come from psychology lectures, and all reading texts are taken from the same field of study. There is also a focus throughout on the key psychology vocabulary that students will need. The Teacher's Book includes: Comprehensive teaching notes on all exercises to help teachers prepare effective lessons Complete answer keys to all exercises Full transcripts of listening exercises Facsimiles of Course Book pages at the appropriate point in each unit Photocopiable resource pages and ideas for additional activities The Garnet English for Specific Academic Purposes series covers a range of academic subjects. All titles present the same skills and vocabulary points. Teachers can therefore deal with a range of ESAP courses at the same time, knowing that each subject title will focus on the same key skills and follow the same structure. Key Features Systematic approach to developing academic skills through relevant content. Focus on receptive skills (reading and listening) to activate productive skills (writing and speaking) in subject area. Eight-page units combine language and academic skills teaching. Vocabulary and academic skills bank in each unit for reference and revision. Audio CDs for further self-study or homework. Ideal coursework for EAP teachers.
