Book excerpt: Jennifer Ellis thought she had left behind the memories of the international incident where a chartered Iberian Air 727 was hijacked with she and other American high school students, including her brother. But eight years later, while working at the West Wing Gallery of the National Gallery of Art, Jennifer Ellis sees a figure involved with the incident. What was he doing in Washington, D.C.' Was he simply on vacation? If so, why did he run when he realized she'd seen him? Bent on revenge for the slaying of his family, and financed by a wealthy patron in Barcelona, Spain with his own grudge to bear, Ernesto de Rivera uses a unique and deadly high tech method of assassination. When de Rivera discovers that Henry Ellis was the one responsible for unleashing the terrorist who massacred his family he turns his attention to the Ellis family. Once again, the Ellis family is in danger. However, this time, the tables are turned. Instead of Henry Ellis trying to protect and save the lives of his children, it is his daughter, Jennifer Ellis, along with a female F.B.I. agent and a woman detective from Barcelona. Together they confront not only Ernesto de Rivera, but other heretofore unknown threats against their lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intertwined stories of two archipelagos and their diasporas This volume is the first systematic comparative study of Cuba and Puerto Rico from both a historical and contemporary perspective. In these essays, contributors highlight the interconnectedness of the two archipelagos in social categories such as nation, race, class, and gender to encourage a more nuanced and multifaceted study of the relationships between the islands and their diasporas. Topics range from historical and anthropological perspectives on Cuba and Puerto Rico before and during the Cold War to cultural and sociological studies of diasporic communities in the United States. The volume features analyses of political coalitions, the formation of interisland sororities, and environmental issues. Along with sharing a similar early history, Cuba and Puerto Rico have closely intertwined cultures, including their linguistic, literary, food, musical, and religious practices. Contributors also discuss literature by Cuban and Puerto Rican authors by examining the aesthetics of literary techniques and discourses, the representation of psychological space on the stage, and the impacts of migration. Showing how the trajectories of both archipelagos have been linked together for centuries and how they have diverged recently, Cuba and Puerto Rico offers a transdisciplinary approach to the study of this intricate relationship and the formation of diasporic communities and continuities. Publication of this work made possible by a Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Book excerpt: With videogames now one of the world's most popular diversions, the virtual world has increasing psychological influence on real-world players. This book examines the relationships between virtual and non-virtual identity in visual role-playing games. Utilizing James Gee's theoretical constructs of real-world identity, virtual-world identity, and projective identity, this research shows dynamic, varying and complex relationships between the virtual avatar and the player's sense of self and makes recommendations of terminology for future identity researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chasing Villa is a record of events in Western history, military history, the Mexican Revolution, and the last of the horse cavalry. Following its first publication in 1934, U.S. Army Colonel Frank Tompkins’ account of the Punitive Expedition by a participant became widely considered to be one of the most comprehensive. The book tells the story of the Columbus Raid and Pershing’s Expedition into Mexico. On March 9, 1916 the border town of Columbus, New Mexico was attacked by forces under the command of the Mexican revolutionary, Pancho Villa. Eighteen Americans were killed and a number of buildings were burned to the ground before the U.S. Cavalry, inflicting heavy losses, drove Villa and his mounted band back into Mexico. Frank Tompkins, a Major in the U.S. Cavalry at the time, led the counterattack against Villa’s mounted men on March 9th, and was with General John “Black Jack” Pershing during the subsequent year-long “Punitive Expedition” that sought to capture the elusive Villa in Mexico. The Columbus Raid and Punitive Expedition proved to be the last major campaign of the U.S. Cavalry. At the same time it presaged the more modern military techniques that would soon be employed by American forces in World War I. First published in 1934 and long out of print, “Chasing Villa” is a sound and literate record of milestone events in Western history, military history, the Mexican revolution, and the last of the horse cavalry.

Book excerpt: A book of brief essays, illustrative art, and photography from often obscure historical and ethnological studies of Apache history, life, and culture in the last half of the nineteenth century. These snippets of history and culture provide insights into late nineteenth century Apache culture, history, and supernatural beliefs as the great western migration after the Civil War swept over the Apache bands in the late nineteenth century resulting in immense pressure for their cultures to change or vanish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twentieth-century authors and filmmakers have created a pantheon of mavericks—some macho, others angst-ridden—who often cross a metaphorical boundary among the literal ones of Anglo, Native American, and Hispanic cultures. Douglas Canfield examines the concept of borders, defining them as the space between states and cultures and ideologies, and focuses on these border crossings as a key feature of novels and films about the region. Canfield begins in the Old Southwest of Faulkner's Mississippi, addressing the problem of slavery; travels west to North Texas and the infamous Gainesville Hanging of Unionists during the Civil War; and then follows scalpers into the Southwest Borderlands. He then turns to the area of the Gadsden Purchase, known for its outlaws and Indian wars, before heading south of the border for the Yaqui persecution and the Mexican Revolution. Alongside such well-known works as Go Down Moses, The Wild Bunch, Broken Arrow, Gringo Viejo, and Blood Meridian, Canfield discusses novels and films that tell equally compelling stories of the region. Protagonists face various identity crises as they attempt border crossings into other cultures or mindsets—some complete successful crossings, some go native, and some fail. He analyzes figures such as Geronimo, Doc Holliday, and Billy the Kid alongside less familiar mavericks as they struggle for identity, purpose, and justice.

Book excerpt: The #1 Bestseller! Michael Arroyo has a pitching arm that throws serious heat along with aspirations of leading his team all the way to the Little League World Series. But his firepower is nothing compared to the heat Michael faces in his day-to-day life. Newly orphaned after his father led the family’s escape from Cuba, Michael’s only family is his seventeen-yearold brother Carlos. If Social Services hears of their situation, they will be separated in the foster-care system—or worse, sent back to Cuba. Together, the boys carry on alone, dodging bills and anyone who asks too many questions. But then someone wonders how a twelve-year-old boy could possibly throw with as much power as Michael Arroyo throws. With no way to prove his age, no birth certificate, and no parent to fight for his cause, Michael’s secret world is blown wide open, and he discovers that family can come from the most unexpected sources. Perfect for any Little Leaguer with dreams of making it big--as well as for fans of Mike Lupica's other New York Times bestsellers Travel Team, The Big Field, The Underdogs, Million-Dollar Throw, and The Game Changers series, this cheer-worthy baseball story shows that when the game knocks you down, champions stand tall.

Book excerpt: Rudy admires and fears his white supermacist stepfather, Judd. Under his tutelage, he joins Aryan Salvation, an organization that proclaims white people the highest level of creation, Jews the lowest, and all others "muds." It also claims the Holocaust of World War II is a Jewish myth fabricated to gain sympathy. After participating in a botched graffiti attack on a synagogue, Rudy questions his fitness as an Aryan. Then, when asked to prepare a report for his high school history class, he decides he can best serve his cause by proving the Holocaust never happened. He begins, certain of the outcome, but quickly finds his task more difficult than he imagined. His investigation leads him to letters containing a frightening family secret and to a diary written by a boy who died half a century earlier. The letters and diary weave a terrifying tale that invades his sleep and causes nightmares that transport him into the Holocaust. As his "night lessens" expose the lies underpinning Aryan Salvation, he rejects Judd's bigotry and sees Aryan Salvation as a tool to bring about a new horror. His vow to stop it almost makes him one of its victims.
