My title: "Escaping Religion Prison" is not only me sharing what I experienced, but also what I've heard from others whom I have personally interviewed, or heard when they shared their story. I am not here to say that all religion is a terrible thing, but a religion in itself won't save you, or anyone else for that matter. I have found a completely new freedom in my relationship with Jesus, and have experienced a new peace as I have traveled this journey from deception to clear vision, and from religious bondage to complete spiritual freedom. I will do my best to convey what I have seen and heard. So please be patient with me as there is a lot to share. I am also going to share some of the disgusting parts of religion and its major cover-up of the abuses which often go on behind the scenes in religious circles. I also want to point out that this isn't all-inclusive as you wouldn't want a massive 6000-page manual to read. So I am going to try to be somewhat brief, yet cover in detail what I have personally seen and heard. In the first half of this book, I am going to share the abuses I see in the church. One of the biggest problems in the church today is how religion and church standards are often emphasized and taught over a relationship with the one who can redeem us. You see, religion isn't what saves one's soul. If you believe that the church you attend, or the preacher or leader you follow, is the only right one, or that he has a special edge on scripture and its interpretation, you might find that this book will challenge the way you think. This is a great book for discussion among church leadership, as it's much better to have a plan before a situation happens.

What is not broadly understood is how cash-strapped and overcrowded state and federal prisons are increasingly relying on religious organizations to provide educational and mental health services and to help maintain order. And these religious organizations are overwhelmingly run by nondenominational Protestant Christians who see prisoners as captive audiences. Some twenty thousand of these Evangelical Christian volunteers now run educational programs in over three hundred US prisons, jails, and detention centers. Prison seminary programs are flourishing in states as diverse as Texas and Tennessee, California and Illinois, and almost half of the federal prisons operate or are developing faith-based residential programs. Tanya Erzen gained inside access to many of these programs, spending time with prisoners, wardens, and members of faith-based ministries in six states, at both male and female penitentiaries, to better understand both the nature of these ministries and their effects. What she discovered raises questions about how these ministries and the people who live in prison grapple with the meaning of punishment and redemption, as well as what legal and ethical issues emerge when conservative Christians are the main and sometimes only outside forces in a prison system that no longer offers even the pretense of rehabilitation. Whereas it is commonly objected that the normal rules for understanding "christos" do not apply in the case of Paul since he uses the word as a name rather than a title, Novenson shows that "christos" in Paul is neither a name nor a title but rather a Greek honorific, like Epiphanes or Augustus. Focusing on several set phrases that have been taken as evidence that Paul either did or did not use "christos" in its conventional sense, Novenson concludes that the question cannot be settled at the level of formal grammar. What do "faith-based" prison programs mean for the constitutional separation of church and state, particularly when prisoners who participate get special privileges? In Prison Religion, law and religion scholar Winnifred Fallers Sullivan takes up these and other important questions through a close examination of a 2005 lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of a faith-based residential rehabilitation program in an Iowa state prison. Americans United for the Separation of Church and State v. Prison Fellowship Ministries, a trial in which Sullivan served as an expert witness, centered on the constitutionality of allowing religious organizations to operate programs in state-run facilities. Using the trial as a case study, Sullivan argues that separation of church and state is no longer possible. Religious authority has shifted from institutions to individuals, making it difficult to define religion, let alone disentangle it from the state. Prison Religion casts new light on church-state law, the debate over government-funded faith-based programs, and the predicament of prisoners who have precious little choice about what kind of rehabilitation they receive, if they are offered any at all.
