Book excerpt: Vincigliata Castle, a menacing medieval fortress set in the beautiful Tuscan hills, has become a very special prisoner of war camp on Benito Mussolini’s personal order. Within are some of the most senior officers of the Allied army, guarded by almost two hundred Italian soldiers and a vicious fascist commando who answers directly to “Il Duce” Mussolini himself. Their unbelievable escape, told by Mark Felton in Castle of the Eagles, is a little-known marvel of World War II. By March 1943, the plan is ready: this extraordinary assemblage of middle-aged POWs has crafted civilian clothes, forged identity papers, gathered rations, and even constructed dummies to place in their beds, all in preparation for the moment they step into the tunnel they have been digging for six months. How they got to this point and what happens after is a story that reads like fiction, supported by an eccentric cast of characters, but is nonetheless true to its core.

Book excerpt: Repudiated, kidnapped, excommunicated, desired. At a time when a noblewoman’s purpose is to produce heirs, Almodis resolves to create her own dynasty. Almodis’ path to power and happiness is fraught with drama. Forbidden love and murder underpin this extraordinary story based on the life of a scandalous female lord whose descendants went on to rule in France, Spain and England. Almodis de la Marche was ‘afflicted with a Godless female itch’, according to the monk chronicler William of Malmesbury but she was ‘radiant upon Earth’, according to her third husband, Ramon Berenger, count of Barcelona. What were the motivations, triumphs and griefs behind her scandal? A novel based on the life of the real eleventh-century Almodis de la Marche, countess of Toulouse and Barcelona. ‘Almodis is feisty. She takes any situation by the scruff of the neck and shakes the best out of it that she can. Warr brings her off the page … I read the book over a couple of days when I really should have been doing something else.’ The Book Bag

Scarlett Valesteine has lived her life under the protection of stone walls, bodyguards, and her overprotective father. She craves freedom and adventure. But her father insists that, as the daughter of the duke of the wealthy region of Darrenberg, she is too precious to her people to roam freely in the woods. On some days, the forest feels like her only escape from her sheltered, routine life in the castle, as well as a distraction from her broken relationship with her brother, who has been angry and violent ever since the day their mother died. But rumors are spreading about the dangers lurking in Darrenberg Forest - rumors of wild beasts, bands of robbers, and tribes rising up and threatening the region of Darrenberg - and it's no longer the safe place Scarlett once knew it to be. Kolton Reinhart desperately wants to be free from his stern father, who wants him to choose a wife. He's ready to leave his small hometown and begin working to build a life of his own. When he travels to Darrenberg to visit his cousin, his path crosses with Scarlett's when he saves her from a bear attack. In return, Scarlett's father offers Kolton a job, and although accepting is dangerous, it could be the opportunity he's been waiting for. When Scarlett leaves the town walls and is kidnapped and held captive in the middle of the forest, not only her life, but the lives of everyone she loves, are in danger. She has no hope of escaping or being rescued - she told no one where she was going. Who will warn the region of Darrenberg, and her family, about the attack that's coming? Book excerpt: A series of baffling murders among a group of imprisoned agents threatens the outcome of World War II in this chilling mystery from the New York Times bestselling author of Mr. Churchill’s Secretary. November, 1942. World War II is raging, and former spy Maggie Hope knows too much: what the British government is willing to do to keep its secrets, who is lying, who the double-crossers are. She knows exactly who is sending agents to their deaths. These are the reasons Maggie is isolated on a remote Scottish island, in a prison known as Killoch Castle. When one of her fellow inmates drops dead in the middle of his after-dinner drink—he’s only the first. As victims fall one by one, Maggie will have to call upon all her wits and skills to escape—not just certain death . . . but certain murder. For what’s the most important thing that Maggie Hope knows? She must survive. Praise for The Prisoner in the Castle “The colonel sums it up best on page ten: ‘If you take a pretty girl and teach her how to kill, it can cause problems.’ Not just problems—electrifying action and nonstop surprises. I loved this book!”—R. L. Stine, author of the Goosebumps and Fear Street series “Another literary tour de force . . . From the book’s perfectly calibrated plot to its incisively etched characters, everything is handled with perfect finesse by the author.”—Poisoned Pen Newsletter “One pleasure of a mystery series is connecting with a character that changes and grows with each novel. . . . Maggie’s intelligence and loyalty to the war effort continue to evolve in [Susan Elia] MacNeal’s series. . . . Solid twists keep the plot of The Prisoner in the Castle churning until the surprise finale.”—Associated Press “A mystery . . . tailor-made for readers in the post-election, #MeToo era. . . . If you love a tricky puzzle that requires you to keep track of multiple alibis over time, this is your summer read.”—The Washington Post “Evocative.”—Publishers Weekly “MacNeal uses [Agatha] Christie’s And Then There Were None as a framework for a character-driven mystery/thriller that successfully emulates the original.”—Kirkus Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First full-length study of the use and perception of deceit in medieval warfare. Deception and trickery are a universal feature of warfare, from the Trojan horse to the inflatable tanks of the Second World War. The wars of the Central Middle Ages (c. 1000-1320) were no exception. This book looks at the various tricks reported in medieval chronicles, from the Normans feigning flight at the battle of Hastings (1066) to draw the English off Senlac Hill, to the Turks who infiltrated the Frankish camp at the Field of Blood (1119) disguised as bird sellers, to the Scottish camp followers descending on the field of Bannockburn (1314) waving laundry as banners to mimic a division of soldiers. This study also considers what contemporary society thought about deception on the battlefield: was it a legitimate way to fight? Was cunning considered an admirable quality in a warrior? Were the culturally and religious "other" thought to be more deceitful in war than Western Europeans? Through a detailed analysis of vocabulary and narrative devices, this book reveals a society with a profound moral ambivalence towards military deception, in which authors were able to celebrate a warrior's cunning while simultaneously condemning their enemies for similar acts of deceit. It also includes an appendix cataloguing over four hundred incidents of military deception as recorded in contemporary chronicle narratives.
