Book excerpt: Three Santa Barbara sailors depart for Ensenada Mexico to take delivery of a forty-four foot sailboat named the Swan. But before they leave on their journey, one of them named Tom slips in the crosswalk of an intersection in front of the courthouse and is temporarily knocked out. When he comes to, a man with a black hat and a soft voice is leaning over him. It is none other than the Prince of Pop himself, Jeremy Princeton, who almost hit him while riding in his limousine. Concerned that Tom may be injured, Jeremy takes Tom to his estate Tierra Bella in Santa Ynez to see his physician. There, Tom is shown two masterpieces, a Renoir and a Rembrandt, which had been stolen from the Swedish National Museum and then mysteriously shipped to Jeremy in a box of musical instruments. Along with the stolen masterpieces, Jeremy also has in his possession a mystical sphere called the Black Piper which grants the owner great wealth and power at first but eventually becomes a curse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of The Tribes of Palos Verdes, a compelling new novel about a couple's getaway to a Mexican paradise that goes horribly wrong. Joy Nicholson's second novel, The Road to Esmeralda, is a dark, seductive story about Americans abroad. Fed up with their L.A. lives, Nick and Sarah decide to head south to Mexico. They are looking for something: love, self-fulfillment, inspiration, or even just peace of mind. However, as the roads get windier and the jungle thicker, this naïve pair realizes that all of the trappings of society-greed, drugs, violence and jealousy-exist even in the remotest of places. Even tiny Esmeralda has a secret agenda . . . While her prose remains hearfelt and spare, Nicholson, in The Road to Esmeralda, also reveals a political edge. In exploring the prejudices of a small Mexican town, she weaves a harrowing and tragic story of love, devastation, and what it means to be a young, intelligent American in a very angry world.

Book excerpt: Virgil Richardson blazed his own unique trail through the twentieth century: a co-founder of Harlem's American Negro Theater, 1930s radio personality, World War II pilot, and expatriate for most of his life. In Flight, this remarkable man tells his story in his own vivid words. Educated in Texas, Richardson set out for New York City in 1938 to build a career on the stage. Just when he was on the brink of success as an actor, World War II broke out and he was drafted into the army. After overcoming numerous obstacles, Richardson became a Tuskegee cadet in 1943, and later saw action flying over the battlefields of Europe. Upon returning to the racially divided U.S., he decided to move to Mexico, where he encountered a society quite different from the one he had left behind. Compellingly told and historically fascinating, this is the story of a determined individual unwilling to accept the limited options of Jim Crow America.
