Book excerpt: Esas Fables is an insightful collection of original poems designed to take readers on a unique spiritual journey into an altered state of mind and timeless revelations set in past, present, and future environmentsall aligned as one and the same as words flow line after line, uninterrupted, into expansive, ethereal dimensions in timeless space. Enlightened minds from the onset of human evolution have continued to create an understanding for self-aligned reality and to sensibly reflect upon an ever-changing emotional climate restricted by endless confusion in its three-dimensional existence. Life gives natural cause of existence by learning reality as it is not as it is portrayed in conventional thinking or strewn across spiritual corridors in sadistic encounters for seemingly endless centuriessuch is not true reality, only self-centered deception.

Book excerpt: Aesop's Fables, also called Aesopica, are a collection of fables attributed to Aesop, a slave and storyteller who is said to have lived between 620 and 564 BC in ancient Greece. Once upon a time, long ago in a far-off land, all things and beings not only had consciousness, but could also communicate in the same language. These stories contain distilled wisdom and can be used with great effect. They teach moral lessons, above all about love and respect, and greed and all the inner demons that constantly plague us. The allegories in the fables are sophisticated and rich. Normally, animals are the protagonists, perhaps because the depiction of human behavior, especially the contemptible kind, reflected in our animal world companions, makes it easier for us to recognize the root of evil. That is Aesop's world. The key to it lies in the observation that mutual understanding does not arise simply from all things understanding each other; no, that's where the fun begins. The fables are good reading for children. But at the same time, they are amazingly entertaining for adults. In short, they directly target human everyday experiences that everyone knows and makes every day. The book at A2 language level offers a parallel translation that allows the reader to learn the Spanish language in a shorter time. At a glance, it is immediately apparent what unknown words mean. Book excerpt: This exclusive Signet Classic edition contains 203 of Aesop’s most enduring and popular fables, translated into readable, modern American English and beautifully illustrated with classic woodcuts by the great French artist J. J. Grandville. It is both amazing and wonderful that so much of the richness of our language and our moral education still owes a huge debt to a Greek slave who was executed more than two thousand years ago. Yet “sour grapes,” “crying ‘wolf,’” “actions speak louder than words,” “honesty is the best policy,” and literally hundreds of other metaphors, axioms, and ideas that are now woven into the very fabric of Western culture all came from Aesop’s Fables. An extraordinary storyteller who used cunning foxes, surly dogs, clever mice, fearsome lions, and foolish humans to describe the reality of a harsh world, Aesop created narratives that are appealing, funny, politically astute, and profoundly true. And Aesop’s truth—often summed up in the pithy “moral of the story”—retains an awesome power to affect us, reaching us through both our intellects and our hearts. Including: “The Fox and the Grapes” “The Ants and the Grasshopper” “The Country Mouse and the Town Mouse” …and 200 Other Famous Fables Edited and with an Afterword by Jack Zipes With an Introduction by Sam Pickering

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aesop's Fables Illustrated by Ernest Griset is a colorized book and eBook. The original nineteenth-century engravings were collected from obscure historical sources, digitally enhanced to restore and improve quality, and finally they were carefully colorized to bring them to life for modern readers. In the eBook version, the over-150 illustrations will display as either shades of gray or full color, depending on the limitations of your eBook reader. Needless to say, this eBook will be fully ready for any upcoming color Kindle reading devices. Compared to other similar books and eBooks, Aesop's Fables Illustrated by Ernest Griset excels in many areas: - beautiful illustrations with detail and great expression of character in the animals - a large number of 160 Fables - archaic language has been rewritten in modern English - suggested Morals are included after each Fable - an introduction with a brief summary about the life of Aesop and the history of the Fables In an era when lack of personal responsibility and self-sufficiency are common social problems, we owe it to those we care about to provide instruction and direction. Written for adults and older children, Aesop's Fables Illustrated by Ernest Griset gently imparts common sense, critical thinking skills, and ethics. From the Introduction.... "Fables are narratives (or stories) designed to teach lessons. The characters typically are animals which have certain characteristics associated with them that remain relatively consistent from story to story (e.g. foxes are cunning.) The narratives themelves should be simple enough that readers are not distracted by minor details, and the moral lessons should be so plain that there is little doubt as to meaning. Another element which dates back to many of the earliest known fables is the inclusion of humor or jest. When compared to fables, parables are more direct in the human lessons they attempt to teach, and they generally include more human characters instead of animal characters with human attributes. The indirect approach of the fable is possibly more palatable for some readers who do not wish to be overtly counseled relative to moral conduct, and the humorous element also can aid with palatability for reluctant readers. Readers become familiar with the character attributes of some of the various animals included in the fables, and this aids the writer in constructing simple narratives without the need for comprehensive and lengthy character development within each individual fable." This is the ultimate book and eBook of Aesop's Fables. Sure, there are plenty of 'Free'/public domain books which consist of very poor quality illustrations and collections of Aesop's Fables in outdated, archaic English. This is the cut-diamond version of such eBook (compared to the uncut gem.) The printed edition is printed in the USA and of high quality materials and workmanship. As always, we aim to keep the price of both the print and eBook editions at a level that represents a high level of value compared to similar products.

Book excerpt: The fables of Aesop have become one of the most enduring traditions of European culture, ever since they were first written down nearly two millennia ago. Aesop was reputedly a tongue-tied slave who miraculously received the power of speech; from his legendary storytelling came the collections of prose and verse fables scattered throughout Greek and Roman literature. First published in English by Caxton in 1484, the fables and their morals continue to charm modern readers: who does not know the story of the tortoise and the hare, or the boy who cried wolf? This new translation is the first to represent all the main fable collections in ancient Latin and Greek, arranged according to the fables' contents and themes. It includes 600 fables, many of which come from sources never before translated into English.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that Jorge Luis Borges was a translator, but this has been considered a curious minor aspect of his literary achievement. Few have been aware of the number of texts he translated, the importance he attached to this activity, or the extent to which the translated works inform his own stories and poems. Between the age of ten, when he translated Oscar Wilde, and the end of his life, when he prepared a Spanish version of the Prose Edda , Borges transformed the work of Poe, Kafka, Hesse, Kipling, Melville, Gide, Faulkner, Whitman, Woolf, Chesterton, and many others. In a multitude of essays, lectures, and interviews Borges analyzed the versions of others and developed an engaging view about translation. He held that a translation can improve an original, that contradictory renderings of the same work can be equally valid, and that an original can be unfaithful to a translation. Borges's bold habits as translator and his views on translation had a decisive impact on his creative process. Translation is also a recurrent motif in Borges's stories. In "The Immortal," for example, a character who has lived for many centuries regains knowledge of poems he had authored, and almost forgotten, by way of modern translations. Many of Borges's fictions include actual or imagined translations, and some of his most important characters are translators. In "Pierre Menard, author of the Quixote," Borges's character is a respected Symbolist poet, but also a translator, and the narrator insists that Menard's masterpiece-his "invisible work"-adds unsuspected layers of meaning to Cervantes's Don Quixote. George Steiner cites this short story as "the most acute, most concentrated commentary anyone has offered on the business of translation." In an age where many discussions of translation revolve around the dichotomy faithful/unfaithful, this book will surprise and delight even Borges's closest readers and critics.
