In its taxonomies, errors observed in the acquisition of English as a second language as 1) Overgeneralization; 2) Ignorance of rule restriction; 3) Incomplete application of rules; and 4) False concepts hypothesized. Sources of errors are divided into 1) Interference transfer; 2) Intralingual transfer; 3) Context of learning; and 4) Communication strategies. In conducting error analysis, there are several procedures that can be used as a reference: 1) Collecting a sample of learner language, 2) identifying the errors, 3) describing the errors, and 4) explaining the errors. Analysis of these language errors, both oral and written, is needed because the results of the analysis will indicate the treatment that can be done for language learning.

In second language acquisition research, CF is a topic of great interest since Truscott (1996) argued that error correction has no significant effect for students’ new pieces of writing. Ferris (1999) and several other advocates have proven that different types of CF can be beneficial for L2 writing accuracy; however, as this thesis will demonstrate, direct and indirect types, as well as focused and unfocused types of error correction rely on different didactic approaches with different effects in students’ language awareness to be expected. As studies on written corrective feedback present divergent results, further research has to be done to get deeper insight into feedback practices that also include personality factors and other individual learner differences that might affect students’ perceptions of different CF strategies.

This study is centered on the identification and analysis of errors made by EFL learners in utilizing the English article system, with a specific focus on tracing the origins of these errors. The significance of this investigation lies in its potential to illuminate the complexities inherent in the learning process and provide insights into effective teaching methods. By examining the errors made by forty EFL learners through a questionnaire test and utilizing the Surface Structure Taxonomy (SST) framework to categorize these errors, this research aims to classify errors into three main types: Addition, Omission, and Substitution. Additionally, it seeks to differentiate between interlingual errors, stemming from the influence of the learners' native language, Arabic, and intralingual errors, resulting from gaps or misconceptions in English article rules. Initial findings indicate that addition errors are the most common among EFL learners, followed by substitution errors, while omission errors are less frequent. Moreover, the analysis suggests a significant impact of Arabic language norms on the use of English articles by learners, with some errors originating from the negative transfer of Arabic article rules. Through this study, valuable insights are provided for educators to better understand the challenges faced by EFL learners in mastering the English article system. By addressing these challenges and offering recommendations based on the findings, a contribution is made to the improvement of language instruction methodologies and the facilitation of more effective language learning experiences.

Ellis argues that the biggest hurdle for re-searchers is designing written CF studies that investigate the effectiveness and impact of different types of CF systemically. Nevertheless, identifying and evaluating written CF options is an important element for reasonable decision-making in the L2 classroom.

Decke-Cornill & Küster, 2015). However, errors and mistakes are of high importance from a diagnostic point of view as they hint at the current level of students, their course of the learning process, their success or failure of their learning strategies as well as what type of support they might need (cf. Kieweg, 2007; Vetter, 2007; Haß, 2017). And even further, students are also in need of feedback to check their own ability in the foreign language and not to consolidate erroneous grammatical structures, vocabs or an incorrect pronunciation (cf. Timm, 2009). Hence, whenever an oral error or mistake occurs in the EFL classroom, teachers have to deal with the situation by deciding whether the specific error or mistake should be corrected or not and if so, how it should be corrected to support the learning process of the student without inhibiting him or her on an emotional level. Therefore, the topic of oral corrective feedback (OCF) is relevant for all EFL teachers and their daily practice in class.

However, within this field of research it becomes quite obvious that the learners take in a rather passive role and do not contribute very much to new research data and, hence, new approaches towards foreign language teaching (FLT). This thesis can be held true, to give just one example, when we consider the various teaching methods for the FLC. On the other hand, one must admit that in correspondence with the recent emergence and establishment of the communicative approach (CA), the learners preferences and demands have been taken far more into consideration and their linguistic and communicative performance serve as source for methodological research input and constructive, teacher strategies-oriented as well as learner strategies-oriented output offered by science. Recently, and paradoxically enough, it can be perceived intensive discussion concerning the question how to deal best with errors produced by learners.
