Book Synopsis Friedrich Hecker by : Sabine Freitag
Download or read book Friedrich Hecker written by Sabine Freitag and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friedrich Hecker (1811-1881) lived the first half of his life in the Grand Duchy of Baden, a small state in southern Germany. He was a major leader of a rebellion on behalf of the German republican movement in 1848, but his defeat forced him into exile in America. There he spent the second half of his life as a farmer in southern Illinois, helping to found the Republican Party and campaigning among his countrymen in local and national elections. During the Civil War he served bravely, fighting in some of the most important battles. Although much better known in Germany than in America, he founded a remarkable family in the Midwest that is still flourishing and is a major example of the melding of the European and American traditions of liberty. The work draws heavily from original sources, including letters and diaries at the Western Historical Manuscript Collection, the Missouri Historical Society, and the St. Louis Mercantile Library.

Book Synopsis Meaning and Representation in History by : Jörn Rüsen
Download or read book Meaning and Representation in History written by Jörn Rüsen and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History has always been more than just the past. It involves a relationship between past and present, perceived, on the one hand, as a temporal chain of events and, on the other, symbolically as an interpretation that gives meaning to these events through varying cultural orientations, charging it with norms and values, hopes and fears. And it is memory that links the present to the past and therefore has to be seen as the most fundamental procedure of the human mind that constitutes history: memory and historical thinking are the door of the human mind to experience. At the same time, it transforms the past into a meaningful and sense bearing part of the present and beyond. It is these complex interrelationships that are the focus of the contributors to this volume, among them such distinguished scholars as Paul Ricoeur, Johan Galtung, Eberhard Lämmert, and James E. Young. Full of profound insights into human society pat and present it is a book that not only historians but also philosophers and social scientists should engage with.

Book Synopsis The Statesman and the Socialite: Carl Schurz and Fanny Chapman by : Peter Lubrecht
Download or read book The Statesman and the Socialite: Carl Schurz and Fanny Chapman written by Peter Lubrecht and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2023-01-30 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carl Schurz was a larger-than-life public figure whose exploits, real and concocted appeared in newspapers nationwide during the nineteenth century. His letters to Fanny Chapman, his secret love, leave a picture of an age of turmoil, corruption, social graces, and artistic explosion. It took a renaissance man like Carl Schurz to travel among the greats in the literary, artistic and political arenas with grace and judgement. The tragedy of his life, if there was one, is that he is nearly forgotten in the modern world in the face of revisionist history. He was a fighter for human rights including all races and creeds and a pioneer muckraker in a corrupt city of a “Gilded Age”. Lost are his educational contributions, his unpopular and prophetic political stance for Civil Service reform and his fight against a trend toward national imperialism.
