Book Synopsis Gustav Mahler and Hungary by : Zoltan Roman
Download or read book Gustav Mahler and Hungary written by Zoltan Roman and published by Pendragon Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with his employment by a Hungarian family as piano tutor in 1879, Mahler's contacts with Hungary spanned a full quarter of a century. They included the most significant period of some three years when he directed the Royal Hungarian Opera, exercising artistic control over a major institution for the first time, and ended with his guiding from afar of an early and astonishing performance of the complete Third Symphony in Budapest in 1905. Published accounts (especially of his work between 1888 and 1891) are variously anecdotal, inaccurate or incomplete. This work, then, is the first comprehensive examination of Mahler's connections with Hungary, based on primary sources (many published in English here for the first time) and documented secondary evidence. While Chapter III, devoted to Mahler's three seasons as director, is the focus and bulk of the book, Chapters II and IV provide a socio-cultural setting for the period, essential to an understanding of his lot as opera director. The framing chapters concern Mahler's road to Budapest on the one hand, and his Hungarian contacts after 1891 on the other. With its rich offering of documents and many illustrations, this book presents a scholarly, yet highly readable and fascinating account of an important part of Mahler's life and career.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EDITH WHARTON (1862-1937), née Newbold Jones, American novelist and short story writer, born in New York of a distinguished and wealthy family. She was educated privately at home and in Europe. She married Edward Robbins Wharton in 1885 and they settled in France in 1907. They were divorced in 1913. She devoted her energy to a cosmopolitan social life, which included friendship with H. James, and to a literary career, which began with the publication of poems and stories in "Scribner´s Magazine". Her first volume of short stories, "The Greater Inclination" (1899), was followed by a novella, "The Touchstone" (1900), but it was "The House of Mirth" (1905), the tragedy of failed social climber Lily Bart, which established her as a leading novelist. Edith Wharton´s chief preoccupation is with the conflict between social and individual fulfilment which frequently leads to tragedy.

Book excerpt: In the 18th century, Freemasonry was a powerful social institution for the moral world and, as such, exerted an enormous influence on the literature of that century and those that followed. Abbott provides new insights into fictional works of German literature from three centuries, showing that various novelists used Masonic symbols, customs, and written and oral traditions as their intertexts. Book Synopsis Luther and the Reformation of the Later Middle Ages by : Eric Leland Saak
Download or read book Luther and the Reformation of the Later Middle Ages written by Eric Leland Saak and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-19 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1517, Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses, an act often linked with the start of the Reformation. In this work, Eric Leland Saak argues that the 95 Theses do not signal Luther's break from Roman Catholicism. An obedient Observant Augustinian Hermit, Luther's self-understanding from 1505 until at least 1520 was as Brother Martin Luther, Augustinian, not Reformer, and he continued to wear his habit until October 1524. Saak demonstrates that Luther's provocative act represented the culmination of the late medieval Reformation. It was only the failure of this earlier Reformation that served as a catalyst for the onset of the sixteenth-century Protestant Reformation. Luther's true Reformation discovery had little to do with justification by faith, or with his 95 Theses. Yet his discoveries in February of 1520 were to change everything.
