Book excerpt: The Committee on Government Reform heard testimony from several medical experts who believe that steroid use by young women is an underreported problem, and that a great deal more research and scientific evidence are needed to more accurately quantify its pervasiveness. Dr. Diane Elliot, professor of medicine, Oregon Health and Science University, detailed the successes of the ATHENA prevention program (Athletes Targeting Healthy Exercise and Nutrition Alternatives), which is designed for middle- and high school-aged girls. Kelli White, a former world champion sprinter, testified on coming clean about her use of steroids and her subsequent regrets, and Mari Holden, a world-class cyclist, discussed the pressures that clean athletes face in competing in an environment where their rivals may be taking performance-enhancing drugs. Other statements were presented by Dr. Todd Schlifstein, clinical instructor, New York University School of Medicine; Dr. Harrison Pope, professor of psychiatry, McLean Hospital, Belmont, MA; Dr. Charles Yesalis, professor of health policy and administration, the Pennsylvania State University; Dr. Avery Faigenbaum, professor of health and exercise science, the College of New Jersey. Also included in this document are letters, statements, etc., submitted for the record.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007, the Mitchell Report shocked traditionalists who were appalled that drugs had corrupted the "pure" game of baseball. Nathan Corzine rescues the story of baseball's relationship with drugs from the sepia-toned tyranny of such myths. In Team Chemistry , he reveals a game splashed with spilled whiskey and tobacco stains from the day the first pitch was thrown. Indeed, throughout the game's history, stars and scrubs alike partook of a pharmacopeia that helped them stay on the field and cope off of it: In 1889, Pud Galvin tried a testosterone-derived "elixir" to help him pile up some of his 646 complete games. Sandy Koufax needed Codeine and an anti-inflammatory used on horses to pitch through his late-career elbow woes. Players returning from World War II mainstreamed the use of the amphetamines they had used as servicemen. Vida Blue invited teammates to cocaine parties, Tim Raines used it to stay awake on the bench, and Will McEnaney snorted it between innings. Corzine also ventures outside the lines to show how authorities handled--or failed to handle--drug and alcohol problems, and how those problems both shaped and scarred the game. The result is an eye-opening look at what baseball's relationship with substances legal and otherwise tells us about culture, society, and masculinity in America.

Book excerpt: How has technology challenged the notion of unadulterated athletic performance? We like to think of sports as elemental: strong bodies trained to overcome height, weight, distance; the thrill of earned victory or the agony of defeat in a contest decided on a level playing field. But in Game Changer, Rayvon Fouché argues that sports have been radically shaped by an explosion of scientific and technological advances in materials, training, nutrition, and medicine dedicated to making athletes stronger and faster. Technoscience, as Fouché dubs it, increasingly gives the edge (however slight) to the athlete with the latest gear, the most advanced training equipment, or the performance-enhancing drugs that are hardest to detect. In this revealing book, Fouché examines a variety of sports paraphernalia and enhancements, from fast suits, athletic shoes, and racing bicycles to basketballs and prosthetic limbs. He also takes a hard look at gender verification testing, direct drug testing, and the athlete biological passport in an attempt to understand the evolving place of technoscience across sport. In this book, Fouché: • Examines the relationship among sport, science, and technology • Considers what is at stake in defining sporting culture by its scientific knowledge and technology • Provides readers and students with an informative and engagingly written study Focusing on well-known athletes, including Michael Phelps, Oscar Pistorius, Caster Semenya, Usain Bolt, and Lance Armstrong, Fouché argues that technoscience calls into question the integrity of games, records, and our bodies themselves. He also touches on attempts by sporting communities to regulate the use of technology, from elite soccer's initial reluctance to utilize goal-line technology to automobile racing's endless tweaking of regulatory formulas in an attempt to blur engineering potency and reclaim driver skill and ability. Game Changer will change the way you look at sports—and the outsized impact technoscience has on them.
