Book excerpt: The problem of producing geometric constructions of the linear representations of a real connected semisimple Lie group with finite center, $G_0$, has been of great interest to representation theorists for many years now. A classical construction of this type is the Borel-Weil theorem, which exhibits each finite dimensional irreducible representation of $G_0$ as the space of global sections of a certain line bundle on the flag variety $X$ of the complexified Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ of $G_0$.In 1990, Henryk Hecht and Joseph Taylor introduced a technique called analytic localization which vastly generalized the Borel-Weil theorem. Their method is similar in spirit to Beilinson and Bernstein's algebraic localization method, but it applies to $G_0$ representations themselves, instead of to their underlying Harish-Chandra modules. For technical reasons, the equivalence of categories implied by the analytic localization method is not as strong as it could be. In this paper, a refinement of the Hecht-Taylor method, called equivariant analytic localization, is developed. The technical advantages that equivariant analytic localization has over (non-equivariant) analytic localization are discussed and applications are indicated.

Book excerpt: A formula for the odd-primary v1-periodic homotopy groups of a finite H-space in terms of its K-theory and Adams operations has been obtained by Bousfield. This work applies this theorem to give explicit determinations of the v1-periodic homotopy groups of (E8,5) and (E8,3), thus completing the determination of all odd-primary v1-periodic homotopy groups of all compact simple Lie groups, a project suggested by Mimura in 1989. The method is different to that used by the author in previous works. There is no homotopy theoretic input, and no spectral sequence calculation. The input is the second exterior power operation in the representation ring of E8, which we determine using specialized software. This can be interpreted as giving the Adams operation psi^2 in K(E8). Eigenvectors of psi^2 must also be eigenvectors of psi^k for any k. The matrix of these eigenvectors is the key to the analysis. Its determinant is closely related to the homotopy decomposition of E8 localized at each prime. By taking careful combinations of eigenvectors, a set of generators of K(E8) can be obtained on which there is a nice formula for all Adams operations. Bousfield's theorem (and considerable Maple computation) allows the v1-periodic homotopy groups to be obtained from this.

Many symmetric monoidal model categories of spectra whose homotopy categories are equivalent to the stable homotopy category are now known, whereas no such categories were known before 1993. The most well-known examples are the category of $S$-modules and the category of symmetric spectra. We focus on the category of orthogonal spectra, which enjoys some of the best features of $S$-modules and symmetric spectra and which is particularly well-suited to equivariant generalization. We first complete the nonequivariant theory by comparing orthogonal spectra to $S$-modules. We then develop the equivariant theory. For a compact Lie group $G$, we construct a symmetric monoidal model category of orthogonal $G$-spectra whose homotopy category is equivalent to the classical stable homotopy category of $G$-spectra. We also complete the theory of $S_G$-modules and compare the categories of orthogonal $G$-spectra and $S_G$-modules. A key feature is the analysis of change of universe, change of group, fixed point, and orbit functors in these two highly structured categories for the study of equivariant stable homotopy theory.

Book excerpt: The Milnor number is a powerful invariant of an isolated, complex, affine hyper surface singularity. It provides data about the local, ambient, topological-type of the hyper surface, and the constancy of the Milnor number throughout a family implies that Thom's $a_f$ condition holds and that the local, ambient, topological-type is constant in the family. Much of the usefulness of the Milnor number is due to the fact that it can be effectively calculated in an algebraic manner. The Le cycles and numbers are a generalization of the Milnor number to the setting of complex, affine hyper surface singularities, where the singular set is allowed to be of arbitrary dimension. As with the Milnor number, the Le numbers provide data about the local, ambient, topological-type of the hyper surface, and the constancy of the Le numbers throughout a family implies that Thom's $a_f$ condition holds and that the Milnor fibrations are constant throughout the family. Again, much of the usefulness of the Le numbers is due to the fact that they can be effectively calculated in an algebraic manner. In this work, we generalize the Le cycles and numbers to the case of hyper surfaces inside arbitrary analytic spaces. We define the Le-Vogel cycles and numbers, and prove that the Le-Vogel numbers control Thom's $a_f$ condition. We also prove a relationship between the Euler characteristic of the Milnor fibre and the Le-Vogel numbers. Moreover, we give examples which show that the Le-Vogel numbers are effectively calculable. In order to define the Le-Vogel cycles and numbers, we require, and include, a great deal of background material on Vogel cycles, analytic intersection theory, and the derived category. Also, to serve as a model case for the Le-Vogel cycles, we recall our earlier work on the Le cycles of an affine hyper surface singularity.

Book excerpt: This text presents an integrated development of core material from several complex variables and complex algebraic geometry, leading to proofs of Serre's celebrated GAGA theorems relating the two subjects, and including applications to the representation theory of complex semisimple Lie groups. It includes a thorough treatment of the local theory using the tools of commutative algebra, an extensive development of sheaf theory and the theory of coherent analytic and algebraicsheaves, proofs of the main vanishing theorems for these categories of sheaves, and a complete proof of the finite dimensionality of the cohomology of coherent sheaves on compact varieties. The vanishing theorems have a wide variety of applications and these are covered in detail. Of particular interest arethe last three chapters, which are devoted to applications of the preceding material to the study of the structure theory and representation theory of complex semisimple Lie groups. Included are introductions to harmonic analysis, the Peter-Weyl theorem, Lie theory and the structure of Lie algebras, semisimple Lie algebras and their representations, algebraic groups and the structure of complex semisimple Lie groups. All of this culminates in Milicic's proof of the Borel-Weil-Bott theorem, which makes extensive use of the material developed earlier in the text. There are numerous examples and exercises in each chapter. This modern treatment of a classic point of view would be an excellent text for a graduate course on several complex variables, as well as a useful reference for theexpert.

Book excerpt: In part 1 we construct a diffeomorphism invariant (Colombeau-type) differential algebra canonically containing the space of distributions in the sense of L. Schwartz. Employing differential calculus in infinite dimensional (convenient) vector spaces, previous attempts in this direction are unified and completed. Several classification results are achieved and applications to nonlinear differential equations involving singularities are given. Part 2 gives a comprehensive analysis of algebras of Colombeau-type generalized functions in the range between the diffeomorphism-invariant quotient algebra ${\mathcal G}^d = {\mathcal E}_M/{\mathcal N}$ introduced in part 1 and Colombeau's original algebra ${\mathcal G}^e$.Three main results are established: first, a simple criterion describing membership in ${\mathcal N}$ (applicable to all types of Colombeau algebras) is given; second, two counterexamples demonstrate that ${\mathcal G}^d$ is not injectively included in ${\mathcal G}^e$; and finally, it is shown that in the range ""between"" ${\mathcal G}^d$ and ${\mathcal G}^e$ only one more construction leads to a diffeomorphism invariant algebra. In analyzing the latter, several classification results essential for obtaining an intrinsic description of ${\mathcal G}^d$ on manifolds are derived.

Book excerpt: The author explores ramifications and extensions of a $q$-difference operator method first used by L.J. Rogers for deriving relationships between special functions involving certain fundamental $q$-symmetric polynomials. In special cases these symmetric polynomials reduce to well-known classes of orthogonal polynomials. A number of basic properties of these polynomials follow from this approach. This leads naturally to the evaluation of the Askey-Wilson integral and generalizations. Expansions of certain generalized basic hypergeometric functions in terms of the symmetric polynomials are also found. This provides a quick route to understanding the group structure generated by iterating the two-term transformations of these functions. Some infrastructure is also laid for more general investigations in the future

Book excerpt: This memoir develops, discusses and compares a range of commutative and non-commutative invariants defined for projection method tilings and point patterns. The projection method refers to patterns, particularly the quasiperiodic patterns, constructed by the projection of a strip of a high dimensional integer lattice to a smaller dimensional Euclidean space. In the first half of the memoir the acceptance domain is very general - any compact set which is the closure of its interior - while in the second half the authors concentrate on the so-called canonical patterns. The topological invariants used are various forms of $K$-theory and cohomology applied to a variety of both $C DEGREES*$-algebras and dynamical systems derived from such a p

Book excerpt: This paper contributes to the liaison and obstruction theory of subschemes in $\mathbb{P}^n$ having codimension at least three. The first part establishes several basic results on Gorenstein liaison. A classical result of Gaeta on liaison classes of projectively normal curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$ is generalized to the statement that every codimension $c$ ""standard determinantal scheme"" (i.e. a scheme defined by the maximal minors of a $t\times (t+c-1)$ homogeneous matrix), is in the Gorenstein liaison class of a complete intersection. Then Gorenstein liaison (G-liaison) theory is developed as a theory of generalized divisors on arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay schemes. In particular, a rather general construction of basic double G-linkage is introduced, which preserves the even G-liaison class. This construction extends the notion of basic double linkage, which plays a fundamental role in the codimension two situation. The second part of the paper studies groups which are invariant under complete intersection linkage, and gives a number of geometric applications of these invariants. Several differences between Gorenstein and complete intersection liaison are highlighted. For example, it turns out that linearly equivalent divisors on a smooth arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subscheme belong, in general, to different complete intersection liaison classes, but they are always contained in the same even Gorenstein liaison class. The third part develops the interplay between liaison theory and obstruction theory and includes dimension estimates of various Hilbert schemes. For example, it is shown that most standard determinantal subschemes of codimension $3$ are unobstructed, and the dimensions of their components in the corresponding Hilbert schemes are computed.

Book excerpt: New versions are developed of an abstract scheme, which are designed to provide a framework for solving a variety of extension problems. The abstract scheme is commonly known as the band method. The main feature of the new versions is that they express directly the conditions for existence of positive band extensions in terms of abstract factorizations (with certain additional properties). The results allow us to prove, among other things, that the band extension is continuous in an appropriate sense. Using the new versions of the abstract band method, we solve the positive extension problem for almost periodic matrix functions of several real variables with Fourier coefficients indexed in a given additive subgroup of the space of variables. This generality allows us to treat simultaneously many particular cases, for example the case of functions periodic in some variables and almost periodic in others. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the existence of positive extensions in terms of Toeplitz operators on Besikovitch spaces. Furthermore, when a solution exists a special extension (the band extension) is constructed which enjoys a maximum entropy property.A linear fractional parameterization of the set of all extensions is also provided. We interpret the obtained results (in the periodic case) in terms of existence of a multivariate autoregressive moving averages (ARMA) process with given autocorrelation coefficients, and identify its maximal prediction error. Another application concerns the solution of the positive extension problem in the context of Wiener algebra of infinite operator matrices. It includes the identification of the maximum entropy extension and a description of all positive extensions via a linear fractional formula. In the periodic case it solves a linear estimation problem for cyclostationary stochastic processes.

Book excerpt: Generalizing the Bieri-Neumann-Strebel-Renz Invariants, this Memoir presents the foundations of a theory of (not necessarily discrete) actions $\rho$ of a (suitable) group $G$ by isometries on a proper CAT(0) space $M$. The passage from groups $G$ to group actions $\rho$ implies the introduction of 'Sigma invariants' $\Sigma^k(\rho)$ to replace the previous $\Sigma^k(G)$ introduced by those authors. Their theory is now seen as a special case of what is studied here so that readers seeking a detailed treatment of their theory will find it included here as a special case. We define and study 'controlled $k$-connectedness $(CC^k)$' of $\rho$, both over $M$ and over end points $e$ in the 'boundary at infinity' $\partial M$; $\Sigma^k(\rho)$ is by definition the set of all $e$ over which the action is $(k-1)$-connected. A central theorem, the Boundary Criterion, says that $\Sigma^k(\rho) = \partial M$ if and only if $\rho$ is $CC^{k-1}$ over $M$.An Openness Theorem says that $CC^k$ over $M$ is an open condition on the space of isometric actions $\rho$ of $G$ on $M$. Another Openness Theorem says that $\Sigma^k(\rho)$ is an open subset of $\partial M$ with respect to the Tits metric topology. When $\rho(G)$ is a discrete group of isometries the property $CC^{k-1}$ is equivalent to ker$(\rho)$ having the topological finiteness property type '$F_k$'. More generally, if the orbits of the action are discrete, $CC^{k-1}$ is equivalent to the point-stabilizers having type $F_k$. In particular, for $k=2$ we are characterizing finite presentability of kernels and stabilizers. Examples discussed include: locally rigid actions, translation actions on vector spaces (especially those by metabelian groups), actions on trees (including those of $S$-arithmetic groups on Bruhat-Tits trees), and $SL_2$ actions on the hyperbolic plane.
