Book excerpt: When one extends the (almost) collapsible pseudo-spine representation theorem for homotopy $3$-spheres [Po3] to open simply connected $3$-manifolds $V^3$, new phenomena appear: at the source of the representation, the set of double points is, generally speaking, no longer closed. We show that at the cost of replacing $V^3$ by $V_h^3 = \{V^3$ with very many holes $\}$, we can always find representations $X^2 \stackrel {f} {\rightarrow} V^3$ with $X^2$ locally finite and almost-arborescent, with $\Psi (f)=\Phi (f)$, with the open regular neighbourhood (the only one which is well-defined here) Nbd$(fX^2)=V^3_h$ and such that on any precompact tight transversal to the set of double lines, we have only finitely many limit points (of the set of double points). Moreover, if $V^3$ is the universal covering space of a closed $3$-manifold, $V^3=\widetilde M^3$, then we can find an $X^2$ with a free $\pi_1M^3$ action and having the equivariance property $f(gx)=gf(x)$, $g\in \pi_1M^3$. Having simultaneously all these properties for $X^2\stackrel{f} {\rightarrow} \widetilde M^3$ is one of the steps in the first author's program for proving that $\pi_1^\infty \widetilde M^3=[UNK]0$, [Po11, Po12]. Achieving equivariance is far from being straightforward, since $X^2$ is gotten starting from a tree of fundamental domains on which $\pi_1M^3$ cannot, generally speaking, act freely. So, in this paper we have both a representation theorem for general ($\pi_1=0$) $V^3$'s and a harder equivariant representation theorem for $\widetilde M^3$ (with $gfX^2=fX^2, \, g\in\pi_1M^3$), the proof of which is not a specialization of the first, 'easier' result. But, finiteness is achieved in both contexts. In a certain sense, this finiteness is a best possible result, since if the set of limit points in question is $\emptyset$ (i.e. if the set of double points is closed), then $\pi_1^\infty V_h^3$ (which is always equal to $\pi_1^\infty V^3$) is zero. In [PoTa2] it was also shown that when we insist on representing $V^3$ itself, rather than $V_h^3$, and if $V^3$ is wild ($\pi_1^\infty\not =0$), then the transversal structure of the set of double lines can exhibit chaotic dynamical behavior. Our finiteness theorem avoids chaos at the cost of a lot of redundancy (the same double point $(x, y)$ can be reached in many distinct ways starting from the singularities).

This book was released on 2005 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir completes the series of papers beginning with [KL1,KL2], showing that, for a commutative noetherian ring $\Lambda$, either the category of $\Lambda$-modules of finite length has wild representation type or else we can describe the category of finitely generated $\Lambda$-modules, including their direct-sum relations and local-global relations. (There is a possible exception to our results, involving characteristic 2.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We develop the basic theory of root systems $R$ in a real vector space $X$ which are defined in analogy to the usual finite root systems, except that finiteness is replaced by local finiteness: the intersection of $R$ with every finite-dimensional subspace of $X$ is finite. The main topics are Weyl groups, parabolic subsets and positive systems, weights, and gradings.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let $\cal{R}$ be the set of all finite graphs $G$ with the Ramsey property that every coloring of the edges of $G$ by two colors yields a monochromatic triangle. In this paper the authors establish a sharp threshold for random graphs with this property. Let $G(n, p)$ be the random graph on $n$ vertices with edge probability $p$. The authors prove that there exists a function $\widehat c=\widehat c(n)=\Theta(1)$ such that for any $\varepsilon > 0$, as $n$ tends to infinity, $Pr\left[G(n, (1-\varepsilon)\widehat c/\sqrt{n}) \in \cal{R} \right] \rightarrow 0$ and $Pr \left[ G(n, (1]\varepsilon)\widehat c/\sqrt{n}) \in \cal{R}\ \right] \rightarrow 1.$. A crucial tool that is used in the proof and is of independent interest is a generalization of Szemeredi's Regularity Lemma to a certain hypergraph setti
Book Synopsis Kahler Spaces, Nilpotent Orbits, and Singular Reduction by : Johannes Huebschmann
Download or read book Kahler Spaces, Nilpotent Orbits, and Singular Reduction written by Johannes Huebschmann and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a stratified symplectic space, a suitable concept of stratified Kahler polarization encapsulates Kahler polarizations on the strata and the behaviour of the polarizations across the strata and leads to the notion of stratified Kahler space which establishes an intimate relationship between nilpotent orbits, singular reduction, invariant theory, reductive dual pairs, Jordan triple systems, symmetric domains, and pre-homogeneous spaces: The closure of a holomorphic nilpotent orbit or, equivalently, the closure of the stratum of the associated pre-homogeneous space of parabolic type carries a (positive) normal Kahler structure. In the world of singular Poisson geometry, the closures of principal holomorphic nilpotent orbits, positive definite hermitian JTS's, and certain pre-homogeneous spaces appear as different incarnations of the same structure. The closure of the principal holomorphic nilpotent orbit arises from a semisimple holomorphic orbit by contraction. Symplectic reduction carries a positive Kahler manifold to a positive normal Kahler space in such a way that the sheaf of germs of polarized functions coincides with the ordinary sheaf of germs of holomorphic functions. Symplectic reduction establishes a close relationship between singular reduced spaces and nilpotent orbits of the dual groups. Projectivization of holomorphic nilpotent orbits yields exotic (positive) stratified Kahler structures on complex projective spaces and on certain complex projective varieties including complex projective quadrics. The space of (in general twisted) representations of the fundamental group of a closed surface in a compact Lie group or, equivalently, a moduli space of central Yang-Mills connections on a principal bundle over a surface, inherits a (positive) normal (stratified) Kahler structure. Physical examples are provided by certain reduced spaces arising from angular momentum zero.
Book Synopsis Hilbert Modular Forms: mod $p$ and $p$-Adic Aspects by : Fabrizio Andreatta
Download or read book Hilbert Modular Forms: mod $p$ and $p$-Adic Aspects written by Fabrizio Andreatta and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study Hilbert modular forms in characteristic $p$ and over $p$-adic rings. In the characteristic $p$ theory we describe the kernel and image of the $q$-expansion map and prove the existence of filtration for Hilbert modular forms; we define operators $U$, $V$ and $\Theta_\chi$ and study the variation of the filtration under these operators. Our methods are geometric - comparing holomorphic Hilbert modular forms with rational functions on a moduli scheme with level-$p$ structure, whose poles are supported on the non-ordinary locus. In the $p$-adic theory we study congruences between Hilbert modular forms. This applies to the study of congruences between special values of zeta functions of totally real fields. It also allows us to define $p$-adic Hilbert modular forms 'a la Serre' as $p$-adic uniform limit of classical modular forms, and compare them with $p$-adic modular forms 'a la Katz' that are regular functions on a certain formal moduli scheme. We show that the two notions agree for cusp forms and for a suitable class of weights containing all the classical ones. We extend the operators $V$ and $\Theta_\chi$ to the $p$-adic setting.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this the authors obtain an isoperimetric characterization of relatively hyperbolicity of a groups with respect to a collection of subgroups. This allows them to apply classical combinatorial methods related to van Kampen diagrams to obtain relative analogues of some well-known algebraic and geometric properties of ordinary hyperbolic groups. There is also an introduction and study of the notion of a relatively quasi-convex subgroup of a relatively hyperbolic group and solve somenatural algorithmic problems.

Book Synopsis Measure Theoretic Laws for lim sup Sets by : Victor Beresnevich
Download or read book Measure Theoretic Laws for lim sup Sets written by Victor Beresnevich and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given a compact metric space $(\Omega,d)$ equipped with a non-atomic, probability measure $m$ and a positive decreasing function $\psi$, we consider a natural class of lim sup subsets $\Lambda(\psi)$ of $\Omega$. The classical lim sup set $W(\psi)$ of `$\p$-approximable' numbers in the theory of metric Diophantine approximation fall within this class. We establish sufficient conditions (which are also necessary under some natural assumptions) for the $m$-measure of $\Lambda(\psi)$to be either positive or full in $\Omega$ and for the Hausdorff $f$-measure to be infinite. The classical theorems of Khintchine-Groshev and Jarník concerning $W(\psi)$ fall into our general framework. The main results provide a unifying treatment of numerous problems in metric Diophantineapproximation including those for real, complex and $p$-adic fields associated with both independent and dependent quantities. Applications also include those to Kleinian groups and rational maps. Compared to previous works our framework allows us to successfully remove many unnecessary conditions and strengthen fundamental results such as Jarník's theorem and the Baker-Schmidt theorem. In particular, the strengthening of Jarník's theorem opens up the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecturefor Hausdorff measures.
Book Synopsis A Geometric Mechanism for Diffusion in Hamiltonian Systems Overcoming the Large Gap Problem: Heuristics and Rigorous Verification on a Model by : Amadeu Delshams
Download or read book A Geometric Mechanism for Diffusion in Hamiltonian Systems Overcoming the Large Gap Problem: Heuristics and Rigorous Verification on a Model written by Amadeu Delshams and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning by introducing a geometric mechanism for diffusion in a priori unstable nearly integrable dynamical systems. This book is based on the observation that resonances, besides destroying the primary KAM tori, create secondary tori and tori of lower dimension. It argues that these objects created by resonances can be incorporated in transition chains taking the place of the destroyed primary KAM tori. The authors establish rigorously the existence of this mechanism in a simplemodel that has been studied before. The main technique is to develop a toolkit to study, in a unified way, tori of different topologies and their invariant manifolds, their intersections as well as shadowing properties of these bi-asymptotic orbits. This toolkit is based on extending and unifyingstandard techniques. A new tool used here is the scattering map of normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds. The model considered is a one-parameter family, which for $\varepsilon = 0$ is an integrable system. We give a small number of explicit conditions the jet of order $3$ of the family that, if verified imply diffusion. The conditions are just that some explicitely constructed functionals do not vanish identically or have non-degenerate critical points, etc.An attractive feature of themechanism is that the transition chains are shorter in the places where the heuristic intuition and numerical experimentation suggests that the diffusion is strongest.
