Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this chapter, we review the physical processes that create the mean and variable circulation features along the eastern margins of the ocean basins. Rather than describing the individual systems, we describe the processes and their variability between the systems, dividing the discussion into the low-, mid- and high-latitude regions. We start with the low latitudes, since their signals often move poleward along the coastal wave guides into the midlatitudes, which are the well-known eastern boundary upwelling systems. Our treatment of the higher latitudes is limited to examples from the better-studied NE Pacific Basin (The Alaska Current).

Book Synopsis Physical Oceanography Processes at Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems by : Francisco Machin
Download or read book Physical Oceanography Processes at Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems written by Francisco Machin and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-12-29 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eastern boundary upwelling systems (EBUS) have historically received attention from the scientific community due to their impact on the economic development of these highly productive systems. Remote sensing, numerical modeling, and in situ observations have increased their spatial and temporal resolutions during the last 40 years in their strategy to provide reliable products about the actual state of the ocean. The assembly of several data sources currently constitutes an opportunity to increase our knowledge about the present and future state of the relatively narrow and highly variable EBUS. The primary forcing mechanism in the upwelling regions is the wind stress in areas close to the coast. Long-term trends in wind intensity in upwelling areas present considerable uncertainties as the different wind databases produce divergent results. On the other hand, although the effect of climate change in the interior ocean is increasing temperatures in upwelling areas, the long-term trends seem to be in the opposite direction. Hence, assessing the long-term impact of the environmental conditions on upwelling development represents a major challenge for the scientific community. This special issue aims to discuss the state-of-the-art understanding of dynamical processes governing the ocean at the eastern boundary upwelling systems in a changing ocean.

Book Synopsis Benguela: Predicting a Large Marine Ecosystem by : Vere Shannon
Download or read book Benguela: Predicting a Large Marine Ecosystem written by Vere Shannon and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-08-17 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book which examines much of what we know and also what we don’t know about the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem and its inherent variability. Building on recent work and exciting findings about the predictability of the Benguela and other coastal upwelling ecosystems, the book takes a look towards the future and highlights the difficulty of making predictions in such a complex and variable region. The book illustrates what scientists and managers from developed and developing countries can achieve by working together, and it lays a solid base upon which to build wise management and ensure sustainable use of the ecosystem. Essential reading and a valuable reference work on the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem Covers what we know about variability in the Benguela and its impacts Provides information on forecasting in the Benguela and offers insight in what is predictable and what is not Discusses key elements of a future integrated observing and forecasting system
Book Synopsis Biodiversity of Angola by : Brian J. Huntley
Download or read book Biodiversity of Angola written by Brian J. Huntley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-20 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access multi-authored book presents a 'state of the science' synthesis of knowledge on the biodiversity of Angola, based on sources in peer-reviewed journals, in books and where appropriate, unpublished official reports. The book identifies Angola as one of the most biologically diverse countries in Africa, but notes that its fauna, flora, habitats and the processes that drive the dynamics of its ecosystems are still very poorly researched and documented. This 'state of the science' synthesis is for the use of all students of Angola's biodiversity, and for those responsible for the planning, development and sustainable management of the country's living resources. The volume brings together the results of expeditions and research undertaken in Angola since the late eighteenth century, with emphasis on work conducted in the four decades since Angola's independence in 1975. The individual chapters have been written by leaders in their fields, and reviewed by peers familiar with the region.

Book Synopsis Indo-Pacific Climate Variability and Predictability by : Swadhin Kumar Behera
Download or read book Indo-Pacific Climate Variability and Predictability written by Swadhin Kumar Behera and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-12-09 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book aims to compile some of the important results from the latest research in climate variation and prediction studies with a focus on the role of the ocean, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. Several new modes of ocean-atmosphere climate variations have been discovered in the last decade, and the advance of climate models have made it possible to predict some of these modes several seasons ahead. This has improved the society's ability to use model predictions to mitigate climate disaster risks. Leading experts in the field were invited to contribute to this book in order to compile a comprehensive review for the benefit of researchers as well as general readers interested in the subject."--

Download or read book Climate System Dynamics and Modelling written by Hugues Goosse and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-10 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook presents all aspects of climate system dynamics, on all timescales from the Earth's formation to modern human-induced climate change. It discusses the dominant feedbacks and interactions between all the components of the climate system: atmosphere, ocean, land surface and ice sheets. It addresses one of the key challenges for a course on the climate system: students can come from a range of backgrounds. A glossary of key terms is provided for students with little background in the climate sciences, whilst instructors and students with more expertise will appreciate the book's modular nature. Exercises are provided at the end of each chapter for readers to test their understanding. This textbook will be invaluable for any course on climate system dynamics and modeling, and will also be useful for scientists and professionals from other disciplines who want a clear introduction to the topic.

Book Synopsis Ecosystem Based Management for Marine Fisheries by : Andrea Belgrano
Download or read book Ecosystem Based Management for Marine Fisheries written by Andrea Belgrano and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-03 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Showing how big-picture patterns can help overcome the failures of conventional management, this book is ideal for students, researchers and professionals involved with marine fisheries. It explores not only the current practice of the 'ecosystem approach' to fisheries management but also its critical importance to even larger perspectives. The first section gives a valuable overview of how more and more of the complexity of real-world systems is being recognized and involved in the management of fisheries around the world. The second section then demonstrates how important aspects of real-world systems, involving population dynamics, evolution and behavior, remain to be taken into account completely. This section also shows how we must change the way we think about our involvement in, and the complexity of, marine ecosystems. The final chapters consider how, with the use of carefully chosen macroecological patterns, we can take important steps towards more holistic management of marine fisheries.
Book Synopsis Ocean Modeling in an Eddying Regime by : Matthew W. Hecht

It captures the state of the art and discusses issues that ocean modelers must consider in order to effectively contribute to advancing current knowledge, from subtleties of the underlying fluid dynamical equations to meaningful comparison with oceanographic observations and leading-edge model development. It summarizes many of the important results which have emerged from ocean modeling in an eddying regime, for those interested broadly in the physical science. More technical topics are intended to address the concerns of those actively working in the field.
