Book excerpt: Men of African-American descent are at a significantly higher risk of developing prostate cancer than white men. There are reasons why more black people are dying of prostate cancer. Vitamin D. The deficiency of it. Black people need the sun more than white folks. It takes less time under the sun for a white skin to manufacture all the needed vitamin D. It requires more time for the dark skin to warm up and even more time to start manufacturing vitamin D. Black folks tend to shy away from the sun because the sun will make them "darker." That is a bad strategy. When you walk through a park in the summer you see sunbathers. I don’t know about you but these sunbathers are mostly white folks who need the sun far less than black folks. Ordinarily, the people that are mostly in need of sunbathing while partially naked are the black skinned people. This is because dark skin need the intense sunlight the most. Black skin is a marvel. It is black for a reason. It evolved to be black so as to be able tap into the Sun and get those properties that will give you long life, full of health, stronger and biologically efficient. The white skin needs the Sun but not that much. More than fifteen minutes in the Sun without sunscreen and they will get burns and ultimately peels. Black folks need it far more and they don’t get scorched in fifteen minutes even without sunscreen. But some Africans and other diaspora Africans avoid the Sun. Is it not ironic that while some black folks are lightening up, some white folks are darkening down? They call it tanning and it does not come cheap either. People of African descent, living in cold climate, can have a natural Sun protection factor (SPF) of up to 13 as compared to 3-4 for whites. For equatorial and other hot weather blacks, it is even better. This advantage for African Americans and black immigrants, can also be a disadvantage. It is a double edged sword for black people not living in equatorial climate. You just need to have proper information with which to turn the disadvantage into an advantage.Vitamin D is getting a lot of attention lately even in medical circles. Many people are having their vitamin D levels tested and are surprised to find out that they are low in this essential hormone. What exactly is Vitamin D and why should you care about your Vitamin D levels? How does sunscreen use, contribute to deficiency in this important vitamin, and what can we do to remedy the deficiency? This book has been written in such a way that you will be able to absorb the contents in less than it takes to travel from one point to another in a bus or train ride.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Bram Stoker Award–winning collection is “certain to stick in your mind long after you’ve turned the last page” (St. Louis Post-Dispatch). Includes “Big Momma,” a finalist for the International Thriller Writers Award for Best Short Story Here are six of Joyce Carol Oates’s most “frightening—and deeply disturbing—short stories” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette). In the titular story, a boy becomes obsessed with his cousin’s doll after her tragic death. As he grows older, he begins to collect “found dolls” from surrounding neighborhoods . . . each with its own sinister significance. In “Gun Accident,” a teenage girl is delighted to house-sit for her favorite teacher, until an intruder forces his way inside—changing more than one life forever. The collection closes with the taut tale of a mystery bookstore owner whose designs on a rare bookshop in scenic New Hampshire devolve into a menacing game with real-life consequences. “At the heart of each story is a predator-prey relationship, and what makes them so terrifying is that most of us can easily picture ourselves as the prey, at least at some time during our lives” (Minneapolis Star-Tribune). “Everything she writes, in whatever genre, has an air of dread, because she deals in vulnerabilities and inevitabilities, in the desperate needs that drive people . . . to their fates. A sense of helplessness is the essence of horror, and Oates conveys that feeling as well as any writer around.” —Terrence Rafferty, The New York Times Book Review “One of the stranger parts of the human condition may be our deep fascination, and at times troubling exploration, of the darker aspects of our nature . . . No other author explores the ugly, and at times, blazingly unapologetic underbelly of these impulses quite like Joyce Carol Oates in The Doll-Master.” —Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “In her new collection . . . [Oates] relishes moments of gothic melodrama, while rooting them firmly in grindingly ordinary American lives.” —The Guardian “Oates convincingly demonstrates her mastery of the macabre with this superlative story collection . . . This devil’s half-dozen of dread and suspense is a must read.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an in-depth analysis of over 100 plant communities of the Dolomite vegetation. The data is based on the phytosociological relevés, which have been collected by the authors in nearly 2000 surveys. The key part consists of approx. 130 association tables presenting plant sociological data for the respective plant communities. Thus, this volume perfectly complements the successful main volume “Plant Life of the Dolomites: Vegetation Structure and Ecology,” which features summarized, synoptic association tables of the twelve habitats. In addition, geo-referenced locations of relevés and detailed ecological measures are provided. A further part describes the individual components of the fascinating dolomitic landscape (Heritage of all Humanity) and presents tables of vegetation complexes, which summarize the more than 400 surveys carried out in the Dolomites. The structure of this supplementary volume corresponds to that of the main volume with a key part consisting of twelve chapters, each describing a specific habitat, and a total of 106 associations. Several topics covered in the main volume, such as the exploration of the flora, ecological factors and syntaxonomy are discussed further here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depression is not a disease of the brain, a genetic disability or even a mood disorder. Rather, shutdown, numbness or sadness are non-pathological adaptations to adverse childhood and adult environments. This challenging book thus understands depression as a wise response to an unliveable situation. It can teach us what is wrong with our lives and what we must learn in order to go beyond symptom relief and reconnect to our most fundamental needs, relational, existential and spiritual. Because moods shape how we engage with our outer and inner worlds, they underlie all human behaviour. If the sociocultural world is toxic or frustrates our core needs, we will withdraw to protect ourselves. Those who have encountered a non-facilitating environment in childhood will be even more sensitive to adult stresses, since their self-organisation is fragile and non-resilient. As depression is so complex, understanding it demands an integrative approach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of colonialism and its consequences. “A sweeping, poetic homage to Africa, a continent made vivid by Hartley’s capable, stunning prose” (Publishers Weekly). In his final days, Aidan Hartley’s father said to him, “We should have never come here.” Those words spoke of a colonial legacy that stretched back through four generations of one British family. From a great-great-grandfather who defended British settlements in nineteenth-century New Zealand, to his father, a colonial officer sent to Africa in the 1920s and who later returned to raise a family there—these were intrepid men who traveled to exotic lands to conquer, build, and bear witness. And there was Aidan, who became a journalist covering Africa in the 1990s, a decade marked by terror and genocide. After encountering the violence in Somalia, Uganda, and Rwanda, Aidan retreated to his family’s house in Kenya where he discovered the Zanzibar chest his father left him. Intricately hand-carved, the chest contained the diaries of his father’s best friend, Peter Davey, an Englishman who had died under obscure circumstances five decades before. With the papers as his guide, Hartley embarked on a journey not only to unlock the secrets of Davey’s life, but his own. “The finest account of a war correspondent’s psychic wracking since Michael Herr’s Dispatches.” —Rian Malan, author of My Traitor’s Heart
