Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ocean evokes the most romantic images of nature. It is the eternally hostile element that has taken a heavy toll for every act of discovery, sometimes in human lives. No wonder there has always been a romantic aura about those who take to the sea, be they pirates, fishermen, sailors, the ocean itself, have or even oceanographers. Their exploits, and provided ample food for thought and poetic inspiration. Clearly, man kind owes much to the ocean for the progress of civilization. There is more to wresting the ocean's secrets from its depths than simply the excitement of struggling with the elements. It is the thrill of ideas, of discoveries made by scientific analysis of oceanic phenomena. There have been quite a few renowned oceanographers who have never set foot aboard ship. All they did was to use the general laws of fluid behavior and mathematical formulas as tools to study the ocean and to predict events. Amazing 'armchair' discoveries of currents and deep sea flows, subsequently confirmed by observations at sea, are fascinat ing. What a scientist feels when uncovering the true behavior of oceanic phenomena in abstract columns of numbers, in long and cumbersome, or sometimes intriguingly simple, mathematical relations, is exhilara tion. My objective has been to bring this delightful esthetic pleasure within everyone's reach - the outcome is this book. It was about twelve years ago when I first recognized the inherent harmony of the theory of currents. I was probably prompted by H.

Book excerpt: Ocean Mixing: Drivers, Mechanisms and Impacts presents a broad panorama of one of the most rapidly-developing areas of marine science. It highlights the state-of-the-art concerning knowledge of the causes of ocean mixing, and a perspective on the implications for ocean circulation, climate, biogeochemistry and the marine ecosystem. This edited volume places a particular emphasis on elucidating the key future questions relating to ocean mixing, and emerging ideas and activities to address them, including innovative technology developments and advances in methodology. Ocean Mixing is a key reference for those entering the field, and for those seeking a comprehensive overview of how the key current issues are being addressed and what the priorities for future research are. Each chapter is written by established leaders in ocean mixing research; the volume is thus suitable for those seeking specific detailed information on sub-topics, as well as those seeking a broad synopsis of current understanding. It provides useful ammunition for those pursuing funding for specific future research campaigns, by being an authoritative source concerning key scientific goals in the short, medium and long term. Additionally, the chapters contain bespoke and informative graphics that can be used in teaching and science communication to convey the complex concepts and phenomena in easily accessible ways. Presents a coherent overview of the state-of-the-art research concerning ocean mixing Provides an in-depth discussion of how ocean mixing impacts all scales of the planetary system Includes elucidation of the grand challenges in ocean mixing, and how they might be addressed

Among the topics treated are inertial and shear instabilities, wave generation by coastal reflection, semiannual and annual cycles in the tropic sea, transient equatorial waves, vertically-propagating beams, equatorial Ekman layers, the Yoshida jet model, generation of coastal Kelvin waves from equatorial waves by reflection, Rossby solitary waves, and Kelvin frontogenesis. A series of appendices on midlatitude theories for waves, jets and wave reflections add further material to assist the reader in understanding the differences between the same phenomenon in the equatorial zone versus higher latitudes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equatorial ocean dynamics are investigated using analytical and simple numerical models. The steady circulation is first examined using a linear equatorial beta-plane formulation in which continuous density stratification is a key element. The basin is horizontally unbounded and forced by either winds or a surface temperature boundary condition. Two vertically diffusive models are proposed to examine the effects of different turbulence parameterizations. One is characterized by temperature dissipation proportional to temperature itself, the other has biharmonic friction proportional to a fourth derivative of velocity. Both lead to equations for the steady state that are in many ways analogous to the well-known equations governing equatorial wave motion. The analogies are exploited both in obtaining analytical solutions and in describing the flow dynamics.

Book excerpt: An Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) sponsored by NATO and the California Space Institute was held in Corsica (France) October 3 to 7, 1983 to discuss the role of satellite observations in the large-scal·eoceanographic experiments, especially those under discussion (e.g., the World Ocean Circulation Experiment, WOCE, and the Tropical Ocean and Global Atmosphere, TOGA). This volume is based on papers presented during that meeting, summaries of the discussions of the working groups and recommended necessary tasks to be accompl ished in preparation for WOCE and TOGA. The participants of the meeting decided that, although the collection of issues discussed in the meeting was undoubtedly incomplete, the summaries of the discussions and recommended tasks warranted being conveyed to the organizers and sponsors of WOCE and TOGA. Although not discussed at the workshop, it was recognized that an important role of satellites is as data collection and location systems. Some of the common conclusions of the different working groups discussions are that: 1) Studies are needed of the sensitivity of the ocean response to errors in surface parameters (wind stress, heat flux, SST etc.) in a variety of physical models. These should be one of the basis for determining the accuracy requirements in WOCE and TOGA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the methodology of dynamical systems theory is applied to investigate the physics of the global ocean circulation. Topics include the dynamics of the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean, the stability of the thermohaline circulation and the El Niño/Southern Oscillation phenomenon in the Tropical Pacific. On the other hand, the book also deals with the numerical methods for applying bifurcation analysis on large dimensional dynamical systems, with thousands or more degrees of freedom, which arise through discretization of ocean models. The novel approach in understanding the phenomena of climate variability is through a systematic analysis within a hierarchy of models using these techniques. In this way, a nice overview is obtained of the relations between the results of the different models within the hierarchy. Mechanistic description of the physics of the results is provided and, where possible, links with results of state-of-the-art models and observations are sought. The reader is expected to have a background in basic incompressible fluid dynamics and applied mathematics, although the level of the text is mixed and sometimes quite introductory. Each chapter is rather self-contained and many details of derivations are provided. The book is aimed at graduate students and researchers in meteorology, oceanography, and related fields who are interested in tackling fundamental problems in dynamical oceanography and climate dynamics.
