Book Synopsis Women, Work, and Wages by : National Research Council
Download or read book Women, Work, and Wages written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1981-02-01 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to determine whether methods of job analysis and classification currently used are biased by traditional sex stereotypes or other factors, a committee assessed formal systems of job evaluation and other methods currently employed in the private and public sectors for establishing the comparability of jobs and their levels of compensation. A review of sociological and economic literature shows that some differences in the characteristics of workers and in jobs do form a legitimate basis for wage differentials. Nevertheless, there exists a pervasiveness of occupational and job segregation by sex. Given the current operation of the labor market and the existence of a variety of factors that permit the persistence of earning differentials between men and women (e.g., labor market segmentation, job segregation, and employment practices), it would seem that intentional and unintentional discriminatory elements enter into the determination of wages and are not likely to disappear. Use of a job evaluation system is one possible remedy to this situation. While the subjectivity of job evaluation makes job evaluations less than perfect vehicles for resolving pay disputes, they can serve to identify potential wage discrimination. (MN)

Download or read book Work in America [2 volumes] written by Carl E. Van Horn and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-12-15 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive analysis of work and the workforce in the United States, from the Industrial Revolution to the era of globalization. This comprehensive two-volume reference book is the first to analyze the central role of work and the workforce in U.S. life from the Industrial Revolution through today's information economy. Drawing on a variety of disciplines—economics, public policy, law, human and civil rights, cultural studies, and organizational psychology—its 256 entries examine key events, concepts, institutions, and individuals in labor history. Entries also tackle tough contemporary questions that reflect the conflicts inherent in capitalism. What is the impact of work on families and communities? On minority and immigrant populations? How shall we respond to changing work roles and the growing influence of the transnational corporation? Work in America describes and evaluates attempts to address social and class issues—affirmative action, occupational health and safety, corporate management science, and trade unionism and organized labor—and offers the kind of comprehensive understanding needed to discover workable solutions.

Book Synopsis Elizabeth Started All the Trouble by : Doreen Rappaport
Download or read book Elizabeth Started All the Trouble written by Doreen Rappaport and published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. This book was released on 2016-08-04 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She couldn't go to college. She couldn't become a politician. She couldn't even vote. But Elizabeth Cady Stanton didn't let that stop her. She called on women across the nation to stand together and demand to be treated as equal to men-and that included the right to vote. It took nearly seventy-five years and generations of women fighting for their rights through words, through action, and through pure determination . . . for things to slowly begin to change. With the help of these trailblazers' own words, Doreen Rappaport's engaging text, brought to life by Matt Faulkner's vibrant illustrations, shows readers just how far this revolution has come, and inspires them to keep it going! Book Synopsis Job Evaluation by : Michael Armstrong
Download or read book Job Evaluation written by Michael Armstrong and published by Kogan Page Limited. This book was released on 2005 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a recent E-Reward survey has shown, interest in job evaluation is increasing. Organisations are recognizing the need to adopt a logical, systematic and defensible approach to creating equitable pay structures and, importantly, dealing with equal pay issues. Job Evaluation provides a practical guide to designing, introducing and managing job evaluation processes and the pay structures associated with them. Written by four recognized experts in the field, this is the first book on job evaluation to focus on equal value issues. It deals not only with job evaluation techniques but also with the practical implications of using job evaluation to achieve equal pay and provide essential data for use in equal pay reviews. The book also reflects the growing realization that there is a need to take action to completely remove gender pay inequalities, to develop equal pay guidelines, as well as to develop a procedure for conducting equal pay reviews. This is the most up to date book on the subject and will be relevant to both employers and trade unions.
