Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pesticide Chemistry: Human Welfare and the Environment, Volume 3: Mode of Action, Metabolism and Toxicology covers the proceeding of the Fifth International Congress of Pesticide Chemistry. This book is organized into three parts that tackle relevant issues regarding the use of pesticide. The opening part tackles topics relevant to the biochemistry of pests and mode of action of pesticides, such as influence of chlorinated and parathyroid insecticide on cellular calcium regulatory mechanisms; behavioral and lethal actions of amidines on invertebrates; and insect chitin synthetase as biochemical probe for insecticidal compounds. The second part encompasses metabolism and degradation of pesticides and xenobiotics and includes topics on propesticides; selective toxicity conferred by activation; and comparative biochemistry of animal, plant, and microorganism oxidases. The last part covers the toxicology of pesticides and xenobiotics, including the role of biochemical studies in modern toxicological assessment of pesticides; neurophysiological and behavioral assessment of pesticide toxicity; and genetic toxicology applied to the assessment of mutagenic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic action of pesticides and related compounds. This book will be of great interest to chemists, biologists, botanists, and entomologists or professionals whose line of work involves the use of pesticides and who are concerned with pesticide side-effects to the users and the environment.

Book excerpt: S-ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate (EPTC) is a thiocarbamate herbicide (resistance management group 8) that inhibits lipid synthesis (not acetyl CoA carboxylase inhibition). It works by systemic action. EPTC is registered for the control of a variety of annual grasses, broadleaf weeds and selected perennial weeds in terrestrial feed, food and oilseed crops and as a domestic class product for use in ornamentals in a residential setting. Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) is proposing that the use of EPTC and its end-use products is acceptable for continued registration with the implementation of additional mitigation measures to further protect workers, residents and the environment. This document summarizes the health and environmental risk assessments as well as the proposed mitigation measures resulting from the re-evaluation of EPTC. By way of this document, the PMRA is soliciting comments from interested parties on the proposed regulatory decision for EPTC.--Document.

This book explores the chemical and biochemical basis for the further development of herbicide antidotes. Organized into six parts encompassing 11 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the development of a cheap, fast, and accurate detection method for herbicide antidotes. This text then discusses the screening procedures in antidote research, which include the crop, herbicide, and operation mechanics. Other chapters consider the desirable characteristics of EPTC herbicide, including low toxicity to wildlife and appropriateness for use in a crop rotation sequence. This text discusses as well the s-triazine herbicides that are widely used for pre-emergence and post-emergence selective weed control in agriculture. The final chapter deals with the various approaches to discovery and optimization of herbicide antidotes. This book is a valuable resource for weed scientists and herbicide specialists.

Many weed scientists believe agriculture is a continuing struggle with weeds--without good weed control, good and profitable agriculture is impossible. Each agricultural discipline sees itself as central to agriculture's success and continued progress, and weed science is no exception. While not denying the importance of weed management to successful agriculture, this book places it in a larger ecological context. The roles of culture, economics, and politics in weed management are also discussed, enabling scientists and students to understand the larger effects on society. - Information on New herbicides included, along with the old herbicides that are important for understanding the history - New section on weed resistance to herbicides and genetic engineering - New information on invasive plants - Expanded chapters on Biological Control, Pesticide Legislation and Regulation, Weed Management Systems, and more - Instructor resources can be found at http://textbooks.elsevier.com/web/Login.aspx, and it is password protected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crop Safeners for Herbicides aims to discuss the issue of chemical manipulation of crop tolerance to herbicides. This book resulted from a symposium titled ""Chemical Manipulation of Crop Tolerance to Herbicides"". Several chapters included herein are added contributions from experts outside of the symposium. The book not only serves as reference for the knowledge of the agronomic uses, development, chemistry, and mechanisms of action herbicide safeners, but it also assesses the impact of safeners all around the world. It also presents a discussion on alternative approaches that increases herbicide selectivity and explores future trends. Comprised of 16 chapters and divided into four parts, the book starts with a section on the development and uses of herbicide safeners. The text also offers a critical and extensive review of academic and industrial perspectives in the development of herbicide safeners in different parts of the world. Part 2 of this book starts with an overview of the physiological, biochemical, and molecular aspects of the mechanisms, and then further delves in to the prevalent mechanisms of action of selected classes of herbicide safeners. The third part of this book provides data on the potential use of alternative approaches for the manipulation of crop tolerance to herbicides. The last part is a summary of the progress and prospects of the topic of crop safening against herbicide injury. The book serves as an important resource for students and professionals interested in the field of agriculture, agronomy, pest research, weed science, and plant pathology and physiology.
