Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Episcopal Palaces: Province of York The castle of Cawood eclipsed York Palace in the picturesqueness of its history. It belonged to the see from the tenth century, and was perhaps an occasional residence of the archbishops from the same date. The old buildings were destroyed, and the castle built by Archbishop Giffard (1266 In 125 5 the arch bishop entertained Henry III. And his court at Cawood. About fifty years later, Edward I. Borrowed the castle as a residence for Queen Margaret, his second wife, who lived here during the summer of 1300, when the king was in Scotland. It is also probable that Queen Isabella, wife of Edward II., was staying at Cawood during the siege of Berwick in 1319, when James Douglas formed a plan to carry her off. The plan was revealed by a spy captured at York, and the queen was hastily escorted by the archbishop to Nottingham. Book excerpt: Princes of the Church brings together the latest research exploring the importance of bishops’ palaces for social and political history, landscape history, architectural history and archaeology. It is the first book-length study of such sites since Michael Thompson’s Medieval Bishops’ Houses (1998), and the first work ever to adopt such a wide-ranging approach to them in terms of themes and geographical and chronological range. Including contributions from the late Antique period through to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it deals with bishops’ residences in England, Scotland, Wales, the Byzantine Empire, France, and Italy. It is structured in three sections: design and function, which considers how bishops’ palaces and houses differed from the palaces and houses of secular magnates, in their layout, design, furnishings, and functions; landscape and urban context, which considers the relationship between bishops’ palaces and houses and their political and cultural context, the landscapes and towns or cities in which they were set, and the parks, forests, and towns that were planned and designed around them; and architectural form, which considers the extent of shared features between bishops’ palaces and houses, and their relationship to the houses of other Church potentates and to the houses of secular magnates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In nine chapters the author details the palaces of this period, adopting a chronological approach, starting with "Traditions and the Normans" and moving to the Yorkists and early Tudors. This is the first book to aim at drawing together rich material relating to these exotic sites, many of which are now in ruins or put to other uses. A wealth of documentary and archaeological evidence has been drawn together in order to breathe life into buildings that were once the centres of English royalty and religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this book describes the surviving medieval remains there and the far more numerous manor houses and castles owned by the bishops, as well as their London houses. Apart from royal residences these are far the largest group of medieval domestic buildings of a single type that we have. The author describes how these buildings relate to the way of life of the bishops in relation to their duties and their income and how in particular the dramatic social changes of the later middle ages influenced their form. The work of the great bishop castle-builders of the 12th century is discussed, as are the general history of the medieval house with its early influence from the Continent, the changes in style of hall and chamber (still controversial) and its climax in the great courtyard houses of Cardinal Wolsey, Archbishop of York. The book includes over a hundred plans, sections and photographs of the surviving parts of bishops’ residences, with a survey of 1647 of the Archbishop’s palace at Canterbury before demolition.
