Download or read book Relating the Gospels written by Eric Eve and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the synoptic problem and argues that the similarities between the gospels of Matthew and Luke outweigh the objections commonly raised against the theory that Luke used the text of Matthew in composing his gospel. While agreeing with scholars who suggests that memory played a leading role in ancient source-utilization, Eric Eve argues for a more flexible understanding of memory, which would both explain Luke's access of Matthew's double tradition material out of the sequence in which it appears in Matthew, and suggest that Luke may have been more influenced by Matthew's order than appears on the surface. Eve also considers the widespread ancient practice of literary imitation as another mode of source utilization the Evangelists, particularly Luke, could have employed, and argues that Luke's Gospel should be seen in part as an emulation of Matthew's. Within this enlarged understanding of how ancient authors could utilize their sources, Luke's proposed use of Matthew alongside Mark becomes entirely plausible, and Eve concludes that the Farrer Hypothesis of Matthew using Mark, and Luke consequently using both gospels, to be the most likely solution to the Synoptic Problem.

Download or read book Exploring America in the 1980s written by Molly Sandling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-03 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring America in the 1980s: Living in the Material World is an interdisciplinary humanities unit that looks at literature, art, and music of the 1980s to provide an understanding of how those living through the decade experienced and felt about the many social changes taking place around them. Through the lens of "identity," it explores why these changes occurred and lends an ear to the voices of the groups that clamored for them. Cultural icons like Madonna and Bill Cosby are examined alongside larger issues such as the end of the Cold War and a changing economic and political identity. The unit uses field-tested instructional strategies for language arts and social studies from The College of William and Mary, as well as new strategies, and it includes graphic organizers and other learning tools. It can be used to complement a social studies or language arts curriculum or as standalone material in a gifted program. Grades 6-8

Book Synopsis Rethinking the Mahabharata by : Alf Hiltebeitel
Download or read book Rethinking the Mahabharata written by Alf Hiltebeitel and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2001-10-30 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient Indian Sanskrit tradition produced no text more intriguing, or more persistently misunderstood or underappreciated, than the Mahabharata. Its intricacies have waylaid generations of scholars and ignited dozens of unresolved debates. In Rethinking the Mahabharata, Alf Hiltebeitel offers a unique model for understanding the great epic. Employing a wide range of literary and narrative theory, Hiltebeitel draws on historical and comparative research in an attempt to discern the spirit and techniques behind the epic's composition. He focuses on the education of Yudhisthira, also known as the Dharma King, and shows how the relationship of this figure to others-especially his author-grandfather Vyasa and his wife Draupadi-provides a thread through the bewildering array of frames and stories embedded within stories. Hiltebeitel also offers a revisionist theory regarding the dating and production of the original text and its relation to the Veda. No ordinary reader's guide, this volume will illuminate many mysteries of this enigmatic masterpiece. This work is the fourth volume in Hiltebeitel's study of the Draupadi cult. Other volumes include Mythologies: From Gingee to Kuruksetra (Volume One), On Hindu Ritual and the Goddess (Volume Two), and Rethinking India's Oral and Classical Epics (Volume Three).

Book excerpt: In over thirty years as one of the most original and charismatic figures in modern music, Prince Rogers Nelson has enjoyed huge success – and courted considerable controversy. Now, acclaimed rock journalist Ronin Ro chronicles both the man and his music. During the course of his journey from teenage obscurity to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Prince has provoked moral outrage, starred in a hit movie, adopted an unpronounceable symbol for a stage name, confronted record labels and fostered young talent, making a profound mark on the entertainment industry and pop culture at large. Moreover, his restless creativity has produced a string of international hits including ‘Little Red Corvette’, ‘Let’s Go Crazy’, ‘Kiss’ and ‘Cream’, and at the height of his fame the album Purple Rain was selling at a rate of a million copies a week in the US alone. Through access to an unrivalled array of witnesses to Prince’s remarkable rise, including former producers, bandmates and managers, Ronin Ro gets closer to him than any previous biographer, peeling away the masks to lay bare the story of a true modern icon.
Book Synopsis The Sanctification of Don Quixote by : Eric Ziolkowski
Download or read book The Sanctification of Don Quixote written by Eric Ziolkowski and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2008-01-18 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ziolkowski explores the religious implications of the figure of Don Quixote in Western literature from Cervantes to the present. While scholars and critics in the past have often called attention to the secularizing tendency of modern literature, to the numerous fictional adaptations of the Christ figure on the one hand, and the innumerable literary descendants of Don Quixote on the other, this study is the first to examine a lineage of characters in whom the images of the alleged savior and the mad knight are combined. After considering Don Quixote as the first modern novel, and taking into account its relationship to religion, society, and censorship in seventeenth-century Spain, Ziolkowski traces the history and fate of Don Quixote, the character, through a series of religious transformations over the centuries, focusing on three novels that adapt the Quixote figure: Henry Fielding's Joseph Andrews, Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Idiot, and Graham Greene's Monsignor Quixote. Ziolkowski argues that, given the increased secularization and decline of religious consciousness over the last several centuries, any pursuit of religious values or ideas becomes questionable and this appears &"quixotic&" insofar as it stands in contradiction to the sociohistorical context. He concludes that religious existence, for the few who pursue it in suffering, which means that the religious person feels temporally displaced for adhering to a seemingly obsolete faith and lifestyle.
