Download or read book Dr. Seuss written by Philip Nel and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Nel takes a fascinating look into the key aspects of Seuss's career - his poetry, politics, art, marketing, and place in the popular imagination." "Nel argues convincingly that Dr. Seuss is one of the most influential poets in America. His nonsense verse, like that of Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear, has changed language itself, giving us new words like "nerd." And Seuss's famously loopy artistic style - what Nel terms an "energetic cartoon surrealism" - has been equally important, inspiring artists like filmmaker Tim Burton and illustrator Lane Smith. --from back cover

Book Synopsis English Aeneid by : Sheldon Brammall
Download or read book English Aeneid written by Sheldon Brammall and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book-length study of the English Renaissance translations of Virgil's AeneidThis study brings to light a history of English Renaissance Aeneids that has been lost from view. Previous monographs have explored the complete translations by Gavin Douglas (1513) and John Dryden (1697), but there has been little research focussing on the Aeneid translations which appeared in between. This book covers the period from the beginning of Elizabeths reign to the start of the English Civil War, during which time there were thirteen authors who composed substantial translations of Virgils epic. These translators include prominent literary figures such as Richard Stanyhurst, Christopher Marlowe, and Sir John Harington as well as scholars, schoolmasters, and members of parliament. Rather than simply viewing these Aeneids as scattered efforts preceding Dryden and the golden age of Augustan translation, this book argues that these works represent a recognizable and important period of English classical translation. Drawing on manuscripts and printed sources, the book sketches a continuous portrait of the English Aeneids as they developed through the ages of Elizabeth, James, and Charles I.Key features * Reconsiders the role that Virgils epic played in the English Renaissance* Identifies a period in translation history* Offers original readings of influential texts* Brings together the realms of literature and politicsSheldon Brammall is Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellow, Faculty of English Language and Literature, University of Oxford
Book Synopsis Teaching World Epics by : Jo Ann Cavallo
Download or read book Teaching World Epics written by Jo Ann Cavallo and published by Modern Language Association. This book was released on 2023-07-27 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultures across the globe have embraced epics: stories of memorable deeds by heroic characters whose actions have significant consequences for their lives and their communities. Incorporating narrative elements also found in sacred history, chronicle, saga, legend, romance, myth, folklore, and the novel, epics throughout history have both animated the imagination and encouraged reflection on what it means to be human. Teaching World Epics addresses ancient and more recent epic works from Africa, Europe, Mesoamerica, and East, Central, and South Asia that are available in English translations. Useful to instructors of literature, peace and conflict studies, transnational studies, women's studies, and religious studies, the essays in this volume focus on epics in sociopolitical and cultural contexts, on the adaptation and reception of epic works, and on themes that are especially relevant today, such as gender dynamics and politics, national identity, colonialism and imperialism, violence, and war. This volume includes discussion of Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando Furioso, Giulia Bigolina's Urania, The Book of Dede Korkut, Luís Vaz de Camões's Os Lusíadas, David of Sassoun, The Epic of Askia Mohammed, The Epic of Gilgamesh, the epic of Sun-Jata, Alonso de Ercilla y Zúñiga's La Araucana, Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, Kalevala, Kebra Nagast, Kudrun, The Legend of Poṉṉivaḷa Nadu, the Mahabharata, Manas, John Milton's Paradise Lost, Mwindo, the Nibelungenlied, Poema de mio Cid, Popol Wuj, the Ramayana, the Shahnameh, Sirat Bani Hilal, Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene, Statius's Thebaid, The Tale of the Heike, Three Kingdoms, Gaspar Pérez de Villagrá's Historia de la Nueva México, and Virgil's Aeneid.
Book Synopsis The Cambridge Companion to Krautrock by : Uwe Schütte
Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Krautrock written by Uwe Schütte and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-27 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Companion is the first academic introduction to the 1960s/70s 'Krautrock' movement of German experimental music that has long attracted the attention of the music press and fans in Britain and abroad. It offers a structured approach to this exceptionally heterogeneous and decentralized movement, combining overviews with detailed analysis and close readings. The volume first analyzes the cultural, historical and economic contexts of Krautrock's emergence. It then features expert chapters discussing all the key bands of the era including Can, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Neu!, Faust, Ash Ra Tempel, Cluster and Amon Düül II. The volume concludes with essays that trace the varied, wide-ranging legacy of Krautrock from a variety of perspectives, exploring in particular the impact of German experimental music in the Anglosphere, including British post-punk and Detroit Techno. A final chapter examining the current bands that continue the Krautrock sound closes this comprehensive overview of the Krautrock phenomenon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Becoming to Just Being Essentially, this memoir is about living life to its fullest, to achieve its greatest but most elusive goal – Real Happiness. Discovering the joy that true love brought to my heart I began to value meaningful relationships which I cherished with family and friends. The strength that these bonds brought helped me to understand and endure the painful experiences that life inevitably presents, including the death of loved ones. My search for a fulfilling life and enduring happiness led me to take up career opportunities in various countries around the world. Although these brought financial success and much pleasures and enjoyments, they were always fleeting and punctured by life’s trials and tribulations. This lifelong search finally steered me to South India where the well-known sage, Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi, lived from 1879 to 1950. His Words guided me to the fountain of innate happiness that lies within my Self. After nearly a lifetime, I learnt that real happiness lies within oneself. It is an enduring happiness that is not dependent on fleeting external objects and experiences. I share these experiences so that you, too, might overcome the many challenges that life presents and find the Happiness that is within your Heart. Morris Rozario
