Book excerpt: The Environmental Systems Management, Analysis, and Reporting Network (E-SMART) project has the goal of developing a standard for interconnecting microprocessor-controlled, smart sensors or actuators into environmental monitoring and control networks that collect, manage, and analyze the resulting sensor data. A bench-scale proof-of-concept demonstration was completed. E-SMART integrates diverse on-line monitoring and control technologies via a modular design approach and standards that enhance data quality, allow flexible system configuration and operation, and provide for straight-forward, graphically-based user interfaces. Tens of thousands of smart sensors or actuators can function within a single monitoring network. Each smart sensor or actuator device contains its own microprocessor brain which enables it to store calibration data and individual control programs. Standard communication protocols and electrical interfaces for the network will allow multiple vendors to produce sensors which meet the same network communication provides protection against single-point failures. By defining a standard, modular methodology for constructing monitoring and controlling networks, E-SMART eliminates the incompatibilities suffered by conventional monitoring systems and will promote the acceptance of in situ environmental monitoring.

E-SMART integrates diverse monitoring and control technologies by means of a modular, ''building block'' design approach to allow for flexible system configuration. The E-SMART network treats each smart device-whether a sensor, sampler, or actuator- as a black box that obeys the standard communication protocols and electrical interfaces for the network. This approach allows multiple vendors to produce different sensors which meet the same functional specification and which can be interchanged on the network without affecting operation. The project further developed and advanced the E-SMART standardized network protocol to include new sensors, sampling systems, and graphical user interfaces. Specifically, the E-SMART team developed the following three system elements: (1) Base technology for a new class of smart, highly sensitive, chemically-specific, in-situ, multichannel microsensors utilizing integrated optical interferometry technology, (2) A set of additional E-SMART-compatible sensors adapted from commercial off-the-shelf technologies, and (3) A Data Management and Analysis System (DMAS), including network management components and the user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI) for data evaluation and visualization.

GA's team members include Isco, Inc., Photonic Sensor Systems (PSS), Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), Science and Engineering Analysis Corporation (SECOR), and the US Air Force Armstrong Laboratory Environics Directorate at Tyndall AFB (AL). This ARPA TRP project will further develop and advance the E-SMART standardized network protocol to include new sensors, sampling systems, and graphical user interfaces. Specifically, the E-SMART team will develop the following three system elements: a new class of smart, highly sensitive, chemically-specific, in-situ, multichannel microsensors utilizing integrated optical interferometry technology, a large, commercially viable set of E-SMART-compatible sensors, samplers, and network management components, and a user-friendly graphical user interface for data evaluation and visualization. In addition, the E-SMART TRP team has signed Articles of Collaboration with another ARPA TRP awardee, Sawtek, to develop an E-SMART compatible Intelligent Modular Array System (IMAS) for monitoring volatile organic chemicals (VOC's) in the environment. This collaboration will simplify the network development required to field the IMAS sensor, and will encourage the adoption of the E-SMART standard by increasing the number of commercially available E-SMART sensors.
