Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the inhabitants of many of the world's major towns and cities, estuaries provide their first and nearest glimpse of a natural habitat. Despite the attempts of man to pollute or reclaim it, the estuarine ecosystem continues to provide a fascinating insight into a natural world where energy is transformed from sunlight into plant material, and then through the steps of a food chain is converted into a rich food supply for birds and fish. The book provides a concise readable introduction to estuarine ecology. First published in 1981, it soon established itself as the principle textbook of choice in the UK & NW Europe. This new edition builds upon the strengths of the earlier editions but has been thoroughly revised throughout. The new co-author brings a human impact dimension to the revised book. It is written for advanced undergraduate and graduate students (particularly taught masters) who have had a general ecology course, but no further training in estuarine science. It will be useful to both professional researchers and practical managers in marine ecology and environmental science who seek a compact but comprehensive introduction to estuarine ecology.

Book excerpt: Globally, seagrass management and conservation have received increased attention over the last decade. To date, however, there has been a paucity of available information specific to New Zealand about seagrass beds as an ecosystem component and which could be used to assist resource managers in decision making. This report has been prepared primarily for coastal resource managers, to assist in the management and conservation of seagrass. It provides a review of the current state of knowledge in New Zealand, within the context of international seagrass research. There are some key characteristics that set New Zealand seagrass habitat apart from many temperate and tropical systems. In New Zealand, the seagrass flora is represented by one genus, Zostera, in the family Zosteraceae. Seagrass occurs predominantly intertidally in New Zealand, although it may extend into the shallow subtidal areas of sheltered estuaries, and permanently submerged beds of seagrass have been recorded around a small number of offshore islands. While a lot is known about seagrasses in other regions, the role that these plants play and just how important they are in estuarine and coastal ecosystems in New Zealand is less well understood and to date has been the subject of limited study. The relative importance or magnitude of the multiple ecosystem functions of seagrass beds may vary considerably within and between different estuarine and coastal systems. For successful management, a specific understanding of seagrass ecology within New Zealand is required, preferably at the regional or estuary scale, rather than relying on international paradigms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major phase of economic expansion occurred in southern England during the second and early first millennium BC, accompanied by a fundamental shift in regional power and wealth towards the eastern lowlands. This book offers a synthesis of available data on Bronze Age lowland field systems in England, including a gazetteer of sites. The research demonstrates the importance of large-scale animal husbandry in the mixed farming regimes as evidenced in the design of the field systems which incorporate droveways, stock proof fencing, watering holes, cow pens, sheep races and gateways for stockhandling. It is argued that the field systems represented a form of conspicuous production, an "intensification" of agrarian endeavour or a statement of intent, to be understood in relation to the maintenance, display and promotion of hierarchical social systems involved in exchange with their counterparts across the English Channel.
